I have to say, i had a nice new black Cayman in 2 weeks back for a clean and i did remark at the time on how well the wiper blades worked
The new boy at work said something like "all that money for a car and they did not fit them fancy flat wiper blades"

The owner of the Cayman turned out to be a total bellend when he came to pick the car up i really like the Caymans and spent a huge amount of time putting in the effort using a good wax/polish combo on the thing to make it perfect, the owner was not paying for the valet as some other company had smashed his window and they had agreed to have it cleaned, so bear in mind that this bloke was not even paying for the job at all and only really wanted the inside doing, i cracked on and spent an hour just applying the fecking wax

He came to pick it up, spat on his fingers and started rubbing the paintwork all over to check how smooth it was? messing up the finish then opened the door, pulled out the paper floor mat we had added and just chucked it on the forcourt outside what a total bellmiester.

I was chatting with a fellow wash site owner the following day about porsche cars, and jokingly said that the Cayman chap must be on a bit more cash then us so was well in his rights to be a **** with us and my mate told me that 90% of the cars that the local Porsche dealership sell, and contract jobbies with a balloon payment, that never gets paid at the end, they just escape the easiest way they can at the end of the contract.

I assumed that most owners bought them outright to be honest, but he was convinced that nobody does that any more, he had been in a year back when he was looking for a new car and had priced them up, his other evo owning mate could have have driven away in a Porsche for what it cost him to drive away in his new evo 9 per month just with an extra 50quid on his monthly bill.

Getting back to wiper blades though, they did work perfectly

a mate has just got a 911 going from a boxster. He's paying £700 a month and there's a big balloon payment at the end. madness.

I paid 50% cash upfront and borrowed the other 50% payable over 2 years, so just over a year to go and it's paid for

If you remember :mike: who bought the C4S last year. He is coming for a bacon sarnie too

PS I was going to pay 50% upfront and 50% on a two year loan - except the loan contract got lost in the post (it actually arrived two weeks after I had bought the car) so ended up paying for it all up front!

Wouldn't you just rebuild any damage at a fraction of that cost?

TX.

It is a value rather than cost argument. There are a couple of GT3s around with rebuilt engines (one was rebuilt by an OPC) and they had a god awful time trying to sell them.

For a car that is still worth over £40k at six years old, a rebuilt engine history 'could' knock that value down £6-8k, on top of any rebuild costs which could be £10k for work and parts. Whereas a nice shiny new unit from Porsche could salvage that.

But it all depends whether they would go down the replacement or rebuild route on the warranty of course.

Porsche finance rely heavily on the marque's strong residuals to encourage people to pay the minimum monthly along with a 4% deposit.

My Cayman (if I had kept it 3 not 2 years) would have caught up and overtaken it's initial depreciation resulting in a medium cost motor to lease/balloon payment..(38k car for less than my 28k STI)

As it was I chopped it in early (patter of tiny feet) and I took a £6k knock on the residual...which hurt!

Strong residuals?
When a 16 month old Cayenne Turbo, that cost £115k, is up for sale for £80k and will only realise a possible £70k.

I'd say a loss of £45k isn't indicative of strong residuals!

Porsche dealers don't mention that bit, though.

I think the Cayenne (and almost any big 4x4) is different though. The other models seem to hang onto their values pretty well.

maybe the thread title should be amended to Pleasure and Pain of Porsche Ownership

but I would have thought a cannily bought 993 (prettiest by far 911) will hold its value pretty darn well

those pumped up hairdresser's chariots are ridiculous anyway

Late model 993s hold their value very well. I had one before the Spec C - it was a great GT car but the C2 just wasn't as exciting as a sports car and had an interior dating from the early '70s!

Our Cayenne lost about 10k a year up to the point we bought it. The trick with Porsche's has always been (unless your very rich) buying at the right time. Despite what people say I stick by the 996 C4S being a future Porsche classic (along with a lot members of the POC). If this is the case then now is the time to buy one as the prices will soon climb up again.
Much the same as the 993 about 5 years ago.

Boxsters will become 944 money in no time, Cayeene's will always be just a bit more than a like spec and age X5 and a bit less then a like age and spec RRS.

If you buy smart with a Porsche you will not just get free motoring you will earn from it (putting the previously mentioned costs aside) not many other marques can boast that.

Got to agree with Tim here, the timing of the purchase is essential. I picked up my 996 C4 not long after Bear Stearns / Lehman Bros. went ****-up. Bankers couldn't get rid of them fast enough !

£50 well spent.

halfords do one for 9.99, as my roadsters on it all year round starts first time now and the battery isn't flat after three weeks on no use

Hi Phil.

I bet the one you got from Halfords for 10 quid isn't a CTEK 3600 conditioner/charger

I've got 2-3 subbies at the moment but none permanent, what about you?
See you're in Wysall this week?
