Well in this test, it comes 3rd (out of 12) out of all the 4x4s overall with 81/100.

at Hodgy.

Mattee - You've got to remember the turbos are £100k (mine when new was £114k!) cars, the Boxsters half that so the repair costs can be double, so yes, proportional.

The service costs for a Boxster however, isn't that much less than a turbo. It cost's me £15 per month more for the maintenance plan as it would a Boxster.

Obviously you can't run a £100k Porsche for the cost of a £10k Fiesta. Something that has to be factored into the purchase of one.

You can pick up an early 3.4 996 for £13k now - but this would have cost £70k new and so will still have running costs commensurate with it's purchase price, even at 12 years old, and a lot of people don't see this.

Fair dos Zip if it includes the service. Next year methinks!

To put it in context - it has cost me a total of £106 (at an OPC) to run the car over the past year. The £106 was a brake fluid service.

I reckon an average service/warranty cost to be around £2,000 per year, plus wear and tear items likes clutch and disks.

The MOST annoying thing about the GT3 is that Porsche insist on their own disks and they only supply drilled disks that are rubbish. Slotted disks are SO much better and lower maintainance costs.

Which reminds me - I need to clean my holes out

The only good thing about Porsche discs are the grey hats that don't rust, unlike the other non OE ones.

You mean the bells? Interesting as the AP bells on my Scoob didn't rust.

Although you may mean something else!

PS And I wish I had remembered to clean out the holes before I went - that's another £100!!!

PPS The ciggy lighter wasn't in the hole when I left the car there as it was in the glovebox so they said it would fail the warranty renewal! Muppets!

Bells, hats, scarves whatever they're called.

All the other Porsche ones seem to rust - don't know anyone who's used AP on a Pork.

I'd heard about OPC's charging for cleaning the holes out but £100!! FFS, as if you don't spend enough there anyway...

As for the *** lighter issue - think you need to use another OPC.

It could be worse. There is a BMW dealer in London (and it is not in the City) that charges £175 per hour for labour. Plus VAT! Now that is a scary figure.

Autofarm by comparison are under £40 including VAT.

My OPC is somewhere in the middle. But I agree it has not been a great experience.

The prices quoted on here by Trout and Zip106, that and Zips engine worries (about the time I was seriously starting to look for a 996TT) are the exact reasons why I decided not to buy a second hand 911.

Running/servicing costs are high (but I'd factored them in) but warranty costs and repair costs (as quoted on this thread) made the risk too risky for me.

I'd still buy one new of course, or just a year or so old, but I can't afford to do that. I'd need some numbers to come up one Friday, Saturday or Wednesday night. But then, I'd probably buy an Audi R8 V10 anyway.

I can believe it.

Nottm OPC told me I'd have to have my wipers replaced with Porsche ones if I wanted the warranty.
Mine are Bosch ones, who make the Porsche ones.......

My battery was also struggling as the car doesn't get used much, so I bought a CTEK charger/conditioner - it fires up after a week of cold weather like nothing else!
£50 well spent.

Jeeeez - I'm sorry but they are having a laugh.

Sure the 911 is a serious bit of kit but those prices and reasons for warranty failure are an absolute joke! I have vague ambitions to get a 997T at some stage but need to factor in a lot more running costs than I thought.

Still a way off though!

I also got a conditioner but I think the battery was already on it's way out by then.

Will know better next time!

I was looking at the prices of early 996s this week and wondering exactly the same thing. 15 or 16k will now buy you a 996 so I can imagine that there will be an awful lot of wannabes driving around in cars with knackered bits hanging off that they can't afford to replace.

See my post a bit further up.

Even at £15k you're still running a £70k car and everything that comes with it!

a few years ago when I lived in london I went to my local Tyre fitters and saw a lovely brand new M3

I was chatting to the fitters -- when I noticed that the rear tyres on the M3 were showing loads of canvass (and metal) , I have never seen so little tread, really really dangerous

when I remarked how shocking that was to the fitter

the fitter said the bloke has asked to have some second hand tyres put on as he obviously couldn't afford new rubber!!!!!!

you have to wonder about how he could afford the petrol let alone insurance

(prob lived with his mum too)

It is quite scary running an expensive (ish) car that didn't cost too much to buy - I guess I'm a wannabee too?!

Mine was almost half list price but it's still a £40k car. Well aware that servicing will hurt but hopefully nowhere near as much as a similar priced (when new) Boxster or Cayman!!

You do see some very shoddy 996s about - I think they need to be turbos or GT2/3s to look nice. Standard shape is very lardy and "blobby" - 997 regains some of that lithe 993 magic.

The thing is, Porsches are actually quite cheap to run compared to other exotics such as Lambo and Ferrari.

Then you start to suffer REAL financial pain in ownership!

Indeed - reading Evos long term reports on the Murci LP640 (run by Simon George) make me wince!

The outlaws 355 was silly money to run but at least it was new so not a wannabee car... ;-)

I was tooling around in my loan car this morning reflecting on the value and cost of GT3 ownership. I then realised there was a trump card to play here!!

Over my one year of ownership and six thousand miles I would estimate the depreciation of my car to be between -5% and +5%. It is a strong time to sell and quality, low owner cars with FPSH and warranty are getting good prices both private and trade. This would more than compensate for the expense of running the car.

For a moment I was feeling smug again and then the phone rang and it was the OPC...

...having realised yesterday they did not have the brakes in stock they had to order them, as reported. Somehow they didn't order them and so the car is still at the OPC waiting for brakes. They said it may be ready tomorrow, or maybe Monday.

I live and York and work mostly in London. Everyday I am waiting for the OPC to maybe have my car ready I am not with my clients.

This is now beyond a serious joke.

Write down everything that has happened so far.
Note down the hours and loss of potential earnings.
Speak to both the dealership owner and head office.
Hit them with that figure.

They run a business, you run one (I think) - they are wasting your time and treating you like ****. Hit them with an invoice - that's what I'd do and it's worked in the past.

David (may I call you that?) this really is beyond belief.

I'd certainly do as Matt says but bypass the service manager and go straight to the DP and if you don't get anywhere make a 'phone call to PCGB whilst you're standing in the showroom - DP's really don't like PCGB getting involved with any disputes - no matter how small.

Watch the DP grovel at your knees....

If it's not ready by tonight then insist on a 24 hr test drive until Monday in a car of your choice (they only normaly only do 24hr drives in the week, but this isn't a normal situation) and take it back on Monday filthy and running on fumes.

I like your style...

...however the Service Manager has agreed a financial compensation - probably not quite as much as I wanted but a lot more than it was to start with

Not sure where you're based, when I had my little porker I always took it to Porsche Stratford (east london). Always had good service from them. I even nipped in there once for a headlight bulb thinking this was going to be a pull your trousers down job, and the guy fitted it for me there and then and when I asked how much, he said don't worry about it, just make sure you see us for servicing... The only prob I ever had, was that I had some replacement tyres fitted and they were the same profile (michelin pilots) but because mine were only rated up to 176mph and porsche fit the version above (at more than twice the cost... i..e £112 v £250 a corner) the lady said that my insurance was invalid as I'd modified the car. I told her to forget about it, and paid the service bill.

So aside from the sly sales comment, the actual technicians there and the servicing staff were great...

Interesingly my car was looked after by Stratford until I bought it and the last owner had no gripes at all!

I live in York now so not so convenient

It might be cheaper to move to East London then!
