My original 60GB died. Was fully pissed none of the other versions are backward compatible.

What version did you have and was it the YLOD. It might just be fixable.

 

not sure but I think it was a 60gb and it brings up the restore screen when switched on once it has restored it resets itself and then goes back to the restore screen and does the same again

 

Sounds like a HDD problem. Take it out and try it.

Skip the fist few steps because u can't boot in to your PS3.

Go straight to removing the HDD (hard drive disc).

Just leave it without a HDD and if it works just buy a new one. But we will cross that bridge when it comes lol.

ok well bit of an update for you I have completely restored the system back to factory settings which has resulted in me losing all my trophies and saved game data, my ps3 was an 80gb not 60gb too.

however when the mrs found out my ps3 had broken she promptly ordered me a new one

You can get all your trophies back. Just sign into psn and got to the trophies section. It will sync and you should get them all back.
