Surely the offer is with Netgear? To be honest that's what I presumed and never checked!
Could end up with egg on me face!

Just had a quick look at the form and it says to send a copy of your invoice from an authorised reseller. I would imagine ebuyer are so you should be fine.

Here's the form, have a read at the claim process.

Does anyone run one on the same network as a XBOX360 and does it kill your live connection?

Also, with only one drive, what does the flashing green LED mean on the front, the bigger one the backup button not the small one behind the 1?

Well I am shocked. As I said before I wasn't going to pay the £10.50 for next day delivery so opted for the free super saver delivery (within 5 working days).
It turned up half an hour ago!
Haven't got the time to 'play' with it though

I've had a play with it for a few hours now.
I'm actually thinking I should have gone for the Stora!
The inbuilt Bit Torrent program is rubbish, fortunately you can load one that the community have done which works much better (the original wouldn't connect to the private trackers I use).
The actual media sharing is pretty plop as well. I can't even get the iTunes server working to configure it. Just says 'can't connect'....

Haven't tried the BitTorrent client, personally I wouldn't open up my NAS to a torrent program.

Again, I'm also not really using the iTunes server, I've simply stored my iTunes media on the NAS.

I did have an initial play with the iTunes server though and it was up and running within a couple of minutes, but as I only access iTunes from my Mac and AppleTV I don't really need it.

I try to look at this devices primary function...a NAS...and in my opinion it works great, obviously I'm only a few weeks into ownership but I haven't come across any problems yet.

Have you tried the ReadyNAS forums for advice on the iTunes problem?

Yeah I've had a look, other people have been having the same problem but no one's posted a solution yet . There's a new Bit Torrent Client (called Transmission) that has peer guardian in with it. I can get it to download but not seed.
Thing is I wanted the Duo cause of the extra functionality but if I just use it to store media and data I may as well get the Stora and save £100.

The other thing I've found is that if I try 'drag and dropping' my data across to it, such as my music folder it'll keep throwing up errors saying it can't access the directory on the NAS, I can retry, skip the file or cancel. The only way I can transfer data across and it actually work without having to skip files is to run it as a backup! The shadow software does work really well though!

That shouldn't be happening mate.

I'm using the NV+ but I suspect the underlying OS is the same, I'd get on the forums and check out why you can't drag and drop files. Are you accessing the share via CIFS?

When I initially setup my NV+ I copied around 1TB of data to it, took a while but didn't error. I copied data from my PC using CIFS and also from my Mac using AFP.

Have you looked at the performance guide on the forums to help speed up disk writes etc?

Hi Hanley

Yep using CIFS to access it. Mapped the shared volume to a drive letter (windows 7).
Checked the performance options as per the guide. All enabled.
Seems to crap out on any large (over 500Mb) files.

To be honest I can't afford the time to 'tinker' with it anymore and have requested a RMA number to return it. Will get a Stora and just use it as a networked data store rather than be clever about background tasks.

Strange, both of mine had no problem transfering data. Both on proper wired networks though; one 100mb ( ) the other is on a direct 1gb link to the second LAN port on my main PC (this is a temporary fix until I get my 1gb VPN routers sorted).

It did thow a little hissy fit on the direct connection to the PC (taking my internet access with it), but that was mainly due to internal IP address conflicts. Once sorted its been fine.

Don't use iTunes though, so it wouldn't be a feature I'd use.

Having a little issue with getting user access/password protection working properly; But I haven't read the instructions yet.

It's on it's way back to eBuyer now, ****** cost me £10.50 to send back!
Mine wasn't on a wired network, just a homeplug set up (see my other thread on that mistake ). It was odd that the NTI shadow software had no trouble transfering all the data without a problem but drag and dropping was so hit and miss it wasn't worth trying.

Well I finally got chance to set my Duo up this morning and it was a lot smoother than I thought it was going to be.

All I'm doing at the moment is saving files from a couple of PCs as soon as they are altered using the NTI shadow software.

Going to have deeper look later today, but so far, really happy.

Default Email alerts?

Anybody got any ideas how to set up email alerts to AOL...Hanley, Ali?

I have put 2 email addresses in, one AOL and another to an info@website I have. The website worked, the AOL failed. I have gone advanced and entered the SMTP information and still no joy. I dont really look at the website email often so would much prefer the AOL email if possible.

One thing I noticed is: my password is 8 characters long. If I enter it and go back to contacts to do the test email, when I return to the SMTP tab the password has reduced to 6 characters. If I re-enter the password and click refresh (top right) I can see the two characters disappear...what's all that then?

Any thought please?

I have asked the same question on the Readynas forum.

Thanks

Mick

Not got email up and running yet, tried it and it doesn't work. But I think I know why. Could be two issues:

At work, I know BT blocks random SMTP traffic, so I need to use BT's own SMTP server - this I'm yet to get round to doing.

At home, my NAS can't see the internet as its using a seperate LAN port connected direct to my main PC to allow for 1gb transfer speeds (although, now the full backup is done I can put it on the normal network when I'm in the mood to rummage under the desk). Ensure the default gateway in network settings is correct and the NAS is using a IP address on teh same subnet as other PCs on the network (i.e 192.168.1.2 , 192.168.1.5 , 192.168.1.12 etc.)

I think the password thing is normal; it does it to stop people guessing it by hiding the number of characters.

Thanks Ali

It would appear to be a problem that the Netgear forum are trying to resolve with each firmware update. It seems there is a beta firmware update out that has a few of the isp settings included already (not AOL yet though)looking at the replies on the forum'

Apart from that I'm really pleased so to Hanley for doing the donkey work in the first place.

Glad you're hapy with it mate.

Mail works fine on my NV+, my backup jobs send mail alerts to me @me.com address and they go through okay, also tested with my Blueyonder account and that also works okay.

Email alerts all working fine now Just had to put my AOL user name in the From: section. They were suggesting you put Readynas but that doesn't work.

Anyway all sorted.

Email alerts were something that I actually had working fine
so no one else had a problem where it would fail when copying large files?
My refund was authorised so I'll order a Stora once I get it through.

Had an email from Netgear today saying they have received my claim form and my free gift HDD should be with me within 28 days from today. Thats odd as they signed for my claim form a month ago yesterday and I was told last week it was being delivered this week.

Anybody else heard anything?

Think I'm going to ring them again tomorrow.

I got my Stora a couple of days ago. Much more at my user level
I've been able to do everything I want on it and unlike the ReadyNAS this one will let me drag and drop any size file/folder and it'll copy it without crapping out like the ReadyNAS did on me.
Still working through transfering everything though. Hadn't realised I'd got quite as much stuff!
One question, I'm using a homeplug network setup, drag and dropping seems to run at about 7Mb/s, is that slow? certainly feels it when you're trying to transfer 30Gb!

Are they the 85Mbps or the 200Mbps homeplugs? With the 85's 7MB/s is about right.

I was using 100Mbps CAT5 but transferring 4Gb files was taking about 6 or 7 minutes at 10MB/s and I got fed up waiting for it. I upgraded to a gigabit switch and some CAT6 and now I get about 50MB/s and a 4Gb file copies in just over a minute.

No they're 200Mbps ones! plugged direct into a wall socket.

They don't seem to have trouble streaming HD movies though?

Spoke to Netgear (Crystal) on 01344 458200 and its option 4 just now and apparently the Email they sent out was a bit of a red herring. She reckons I should receive my drive tomorrow via Parcel Force. She has given me the tracking number in case it doesn't.

Quick Reply: Finally got around to setting up my NAS...
