It's a MAF based ESL board.

The hardware for the maf and map based ESL solutions are the same, so you can get it reprogrammed with MAP based firmware for less than the cost of a new board.

The actual board's RRP is £295+VAT...

Enduring Solutions Limited

...so the cost to reprogram to a MAP-based board - so at to be able to run MAFless - will be less than that, if I've understood Paul's post(?)

the company i use for all my service/tuning work etc.quoted me £50 plus post to convert my ESL board to the newer spec(he did quote coz i was such a good customer,i've spent a lot of cash with him,or he missed a zero off the e-mail reply).but i don't know if they would just convert the map that's on it now or whether it would need mapping again using the MAP sensor.

Well I was waiting for a phone call back from mapper but never got. So I have arranged for Simon JGM to map my car for me. I'm hoping that he will be able to advise me on the best option for my budget

He certainly will! He'll tell you precisley what's best for any given budget - you're in safe hands.

The main one is that you don't have to worry about MAF failure and possible lean fuelling - due to the ECU getting an out of spec low voltage reading when at high loads/WOT. The MAF is the thing that measures air density so is the predominant sensor responsible to tell the ECU how much fuel to add.

With a MAP-based ECU it takes a reference from the IM via the MAP-sensor (manifold absolute pressure). This sensor doesn't degrade like a MAF - but it can fail (extremely rare though). Also, I believe it's more accurate, as it's measuring air already in the manifold (rather than before going in - as for a MAF). So external things like VTA DV's, heavily-oiled air filters, cone CAIKs, etc, are less likely to upset running/be a potential problem, etc. Plus of course there's the upshoft of also benefitting from the removal of the restrictive physical MAF tube itself! Win-win.

All in all, a MAP-based ECU is safer/better option.

That said, it's very rare for the MY93-96 MAF's (and MY97/98's) to suddenly go way out of spec.. IF they do go, they normally gradually degrade over time, so rough running usually rears it's head to alert you something's up! So you're unlikely to drive like nut until it's rectified anyway (thus potentially saving the engine)...

Thank you. Just wish I had the budget for a new ecu. At the moment I just can't afford one. I'm hoping that JGM will be able to sort it for me

You need one from a Nissan 300ZX Z32 - referred to as a "Z32" MAF. Wires need to be changed around and it need to be scaled/remapped with your mods (obviously). It's an orange label one and has the MY93-96's OEM 80mm O.D MAF tube so is a straight swap into the OEM trunking. Airflow good for at least 480bhp.

I think its serial code ends in "...P00" (snigger).

JGM will know how to wire it up... just make sure you get one that comes with its rubber booted connector and decent lengths of pigtail wires from its pin-outs.

lol Yeah my neighbours aren't too keen I think. Luckily I have 9-5 hours at work (helps that I always leave late too! LOL).

I'm in the unloved LE3 area, somewhere near the police stn in Hinckley Rd.

Well, as mentioned, the board retails for £295+VAT (£347), so around £250+ maybe?

Duncan, will these be MAFless-only versions, as a matter of course?

I don't know. Probably not.

Personally i think the maf based ESL is better than the mafless one.

Interesting.

At least the MY97/98 MAF is the 'robust' type.
