Picking up tonight

Sounds very nice, pulls well, will have to spend a bit to get it right, but a good starting point

brilliant

that's why I had it for ten odd years

I bought it with 29,000 miles on it and sold it with 160,000 odd

And lost peanuts on it

I had a new gearbox at around 120,000 and a new head gasket at about 130,000 odd

but I took the trouble to upgrade the head/cams aswell

but the above was with the original 1.8 16v engine

oh I had v v expensive KONI adjustable suspension on it

loved it really did -- will post some pics up

the bottom trim got ripped of when I caught it on my garage door -- hence why it looks a we wonky

the rear head rest look good --- but as you know a complete bodge (not me btw)

I had a sticker for ages on the back valance -- i suspect the mark is still there

I had what I think were nicer 5 spoke wheels (a little like a Ferrari)

electric windows a bit slow tbh - always were

but has the special 16v "rainbow" interior

I also had a "secret switch" in the central binacle that cut the low voltage to the coil - wonder if that is still there

and I can still see the crimped terminals on my replacement fan

not bad looking for a 20yr old car -- and the really funny thing is earlier on in the thread when some suggested a vr6 Golf MK2 -- i alway thought that the Big Bumper golfs looked the dees bees and at some stages during my ownership thought about keeping it and sticking a VR6 lump in it

you have great choice in motors hail hail

A magical car then, it reads 137k now, so its managed -23k miles since 2005

Will need to have a good look at it, is a bit lower than standard, so might still be there.

A 'bit' slow is an understatement

Can you explain, I have no idea what this means

Stuck some Rad-Weld type product to patch the radiator, seems to have done a grand job although only temporarily.

Took it out on the by-pass, great noise and pulls really well. Not had a smile like that on my face for a while

Clutch is stiff as ****, but have been told that Mk3 had a hydraulic clutch and this doesn't. So I get a bit of left leg work out, lol.

Overall really impressed with it. A snip at only.......any guesses?

Hail - a mate has one and absolutely batters all sorts of hot machinery at the 'Ring. Think it's 240ish bhp and completely stripped out - a total weapon.

Enjoy!

I reckon £3500.

Not original silver but:

VW Golf Mk1 & Mk2 BBS RA 15" Alloy Wheels Set of Four on eBay (end time 07-Mar-10 18:33:36 GMT)

Would love a go (or a ride) in it should we ever meet.

Dull in comparison but you're welcome to try the soot chucking BMW hearse...

Seen them, but want the silver. Will be keeping ebay under close scrutiny.

ah aha a magic car indeed

i will get a pic up of the wheels I had on it, they were in my eyes at least, and i think the saying is "trick"

anyway it was a brill car for me, I hope you enjoy it

the switch was a simple toggle affair, screwed in to the roof of the central binacle (in front of the gear lever) that cut the circuit to the low voltage on the coil -- simple anti theft device

be careful with it hail hail I know what you're like!!!!

Nor me to be fair. It could be a Mk2 cable clutch trying to move a Mk3 Clutch ?!?*???

I have no idea, it is very stiff, but works fine.

Anyway, it's in the shop now getting a full checking over, so we'll see what's what.

lol, I have looked after it better than some others already. A few years back I spent 4 months finding the perfect Evo. Evo 6 on a T plate with 16k miles and spent it's entire life in a garage getting polished. Picked it up from a very reluctant seller, then wrote it off 2 hours later He was not amused.

I picked up the golf on Friday and its monday now, so i've already had it for ages........

£1500 Ain't it funny you seem to be having great fun with it, and enjoying it. Hardly 355 league, but had plenty of really decent cars myself in the past, yet the most memorable and fun ones I have had have been the cheapest.

A slight injustice to it, but Bangomotoring is the way of the future.... No worrying about car park dents, scratches, being stolen, jealous numpties, and despite being a cheap motor still get allot of respect for the car. Enjoy.

£50 out, I paid £1550, a full £1000 cheaper that the exhaust I put on the 355

you are right, I do so many boring motorway miles at the moment, when I drive on the weekend, I want something to put a smile on my face.
The Golf does that very well It is nice a quiet when pottering along, but with the foot down the V6 pulls and pulls and makes a great noise while doing it. I also love the fact that looks quite understated.
Going to spend a little bit of money on it too sort out the niggles, then see where I go from there. Supercharging is an option

Is it a stock VR6 unit? 170ish bhp? Or breathed on?

A mk2 Golf lasts forever. The inlaws 355 was so flimsy, I'd be surprised if it's still running today.

They're not easy to tune but then you might not really need to - 170ish bhp + around 1000kgs = fun. Lots of.

Looks nice, got a few more dings since then, but still in pretty good nick all round. It's got a GTD badge, what's that all about then?

ok, so had the report back from the garage:

NSF Spring is gone, getting both replaced.
Both front top mount bearings are gone.
OS Rear axle bush is gone
3 out of 3 exhaust brackets are gone, being held on by elastic bands at the moment
Leaky Oil Pressure switch, needing the full front end off to fix.
Radiator seems fine now with the RadWELD has been applied, but the Rad is not actually attached to anything, just jammed in between the engine and the front but pretty sturdy by all accounts.

Other than that, it's spot on

Work getting done now, so should be ready for a good blast over the weekend.

Hodgy, the rear adjustable suspension is still there, but not sure about the front, will see whern stripped down.

GTD badge was purely put on because someone nicked the GTI one, and I thought it might hide a v tiny ding

you can check the fronts -- by looking at the top of the strut -- it should have a flat bit that the key sits on to turn

see pick below

ps I might just might have have a spare key (if so will send to you)
