Err.. I know, hence the name Clio 172!!!

I've already said that I just copied & pasted that data earlier so not my fault (ok, I should have checked it), but I didn't type it.

Like I said I drive one quite a bit, but that does not have 172bhp in my opinion...

Longun -

James's 106 is one of the ones I was refferring too, but there are also some turbo/supercharged ones out there that are stupidly fast!

To say James's is normally aspirated, it is f*cking quick (sub 15sec 1/4) and those TB's sound amazing!

Hope you get yours sorted out soon.

I will be an @rse whenever I want, and often am !

Theres no point comparing performance figures its meaningless pub talk, racing on the road is pointless and dangerous. It makes no difference whether a Clio is faster than a 106 or the other way round.

Bet my **** bigger than yours though.....

PS dont bother looking in the back of Autocar on that one

Mark,

LOL

Would really freak out if they put "those" sort of figures in AutoCar!!!

BTW, we didn't race on the road, it was done at Three Sisters in Wigan and Elvington Airfield, nr York. Round the tight twisty track at Three Sisters I was better, but on the long straights at Elvington the Clio was slightly quicker top end. We both spun a couple of times in the wet at Elvington as we were going all out, but there was nowt to hit!

Everyone should take their car on a track at least once, it's superb!

Ok - been a while since I checked on this tread and I’ve got a lot to respond to! First of all, to the numpty that thinks a standard 106 GTI can take a standard VTS - get a grip, they are essentially the same car and if your really wanting to get picky look up the 0-60 times in most magazines cause more often than not the 106 is quoted slower. I’ve played with GTI’s before and unsurprisingly we remain side by side all the way.

As for the Clio 172 I can categorically say that it is only very, very marginally quicker than the VTS (hence, also 106)! My mate at work has one, very well looked after and maintained and he runs it on 97 RON like me and it's fully run-in (30,000). We have raced them many time down the bypass in a number of runs from 0-100, 30-120, 70-90, etc in the dry, wet, dark, light, cold days, warm days, etc, etc. Every time the result is the same - the Clio pulls away so slowly you have to squint your eyes to be sure there is any difference. I certainly don’t see that extra 52 bhp!!!! In fairness though, when we go through a Gatso at 70 and nail it without dropping down from 5th to 3rd he hammers the VTS cause the 2 litre has way more torque, but, as before if we both drop to 3rd there is hardly any difference. Before you all start - his car isn’t buggered either, he’s even more fastidious than I am and it runs as sweet as it was designed to.

I also agree with Rich D that it takes serious power to really leave the VTS or GTI before 90mph. I often get the chance in my route to work to hammer it from a set of lights down a 70mph road and over the last year have raced loads of different cars including 225TT, std scoobies (never a wrx or moded though- come on lads, play with me!!), Golf Gti’s, SLK230, Boxters, etc, etc and nothing has ever put much distance on me till 90mph bar one. New M3, oh my god!!!! He totally destroyed me!!

Bottom line is despite their age and shortcomings I think the VTS/106 GTI are the best hot-hatch (for driver pleasure - and if you fit in one) that money can buy and I wouldn’t trade mine for any other hatch. That is the reason I’m making the larger jump to scoobyville! That said I’m getting increasingly worried about the number of scooby owners that badly miss their VTS/106 GTI. Guess I’ll just have to take the plunge!!

Volvo boy if your really interested in a VTS mines will probably be available in the summer for sale (x-reg, black, 30,000). She’s very well loved, never pushed till warmed up, no scratches or kerbings and is run on Mobile 1 fully synthetic and super-unleaded. Keep an eye out in June/July time.

If you read my posting at the top of page 1 you’ll see I asked for comments on the VTS (or her cousin) ‘only’ if you’ve driven one. The reason I said this is cause on paper 120bhp doesn’t seem much but when you drive it most people just cannot believe what that modest power output can achieve!

Ever get the feeling you’ve just opened a floodgate....here comes the abuse......

Saxo Boy,

I hate Saxos with a passion. Why? Because unfortunately, they have become the boy-racer's car of the past few years. However, there's no denying they're quick in a sort of slow hot-hatch type way.

But I think you've got things **** about face. The VTS is no performance car. Why? Because there's no real performance. Sure, it can surprise a few things on the road, but it'll get roasted by anything remotely quick.

I know saxos and the like can be fun great fun. Hey, in my driveway is a 306 GTi6 and a two 1.9 205GTi rally cars, so I know what fun front wheel drive can be. On the twisties, you'll get roasted by a scoob. 4 wheel drive does count round corners - i sometimes wish I had it!

But the Saxo aint as quick as you might think - get out in a quick car - you'll soon sell it

What's your point Dunfermline boy? What ain't you buying? If your Clio is standard and you want proof then I'll happily provide it. We start at 0 go to 100 and I'll still be seeing the whites of your eyeballs in your rear veiw mirror! Mike at work has tried to get away loads of times so I know what I'm on about.

Mate beleive me, he has a second rate 172!

The quality control at Renault is diabolical! I should know I had to get my original replaced. The first 172 I had, would have got left by the new one, no problem, the difference is like day and night!

A lot of 172's have huge differences in power outputs, with some being reported as having low 160's BHP, some over 172BHP!

I can't see a VTS keeping up with a chipped Ibiza Cupra to 120MPH, do you!

Whats this boy stuff ?, you are Saxo Boy, I am not Volvo Boy, I am Volvo Man and have pipe and slippers to prove it.

On the car front I look like I will be geting my dads MK2 Golf GTI to replace my Pug so I wont have to spend on another small car, can replace the big one instead !, thanks for the offer of you car, what are you going to replace it with ?

The Golf is an 8 Valve with a full Stainless system (Sebring or Scorpion), I have a chip and K and N from my last Golf, I wonder how that would compare performance wise, similar weight (just under a tonne) and similar power 120 bhp (112 plus the mods).

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!1

This thread just keeps getting funnier & funnier every time I read it!

Face it everyone on here is passionate about what they own/drive and will defend it to the end, wheras other people may not be too keen on your particular car. Fact of life, people are all different, some people like X, some people like Y, but lets not sl@g each other off folks, I'm sure we're all decent folk.

We should all just meet up and sort this out like gentleman... on a track!

p.s. No Scoobs (or similar) allowed, this is fwd only!

Best idea of this tread Rich D! A FWD track meeting would be really good fun and I still think I'd show the guy with the 172 a thing or two. More to the point who'd buy a car with such shockingly poor consistency of quality!! I've driven 4 VTS' and they have all been about the same - differing cabin rattles though

As for me I'm 90% sure I'll replace the VTS in the summer with a MY99 scooby but only if it 'feels' a lot quicker. I want g-force under acceleration simple as that. VTS just can't do that!!

Simon,

If you wanna bring the MR2 that's fine by me mate!!!

Elvington is a good one as it's not too far away for us (York), it's bl00dy cheap (£59) and being on an airfield there is nowt to hit really. I have been with Adrian before in his Evo and I bought an afternoon session of someone cheap, so I did a few laps in mine.

Next one is Sat 6th April I think. Adrian is gonna go, so is Dave in the V6 Clio, I wasn't gonna go, but I may well now. Are you up for it!?

That goes for the others too...

I've been in a Saxo Vtr reading over 135mph - not downhill, and a std xr2 reading over 145mph. Both meaningless without timing gear I doubt either were over 120mph - both top speeds are around 112mph.

True, my mates GF's Ford Ka does 120mph indicated, which is b0ll0x!!!

I would like to know just when & where not to mention how he got it to do that as I know the lad and his car made less power than mine on a RR day in January?!

Without proper equipment you never can tell.

However... as I said in an earlier post my mate has a GPS tracker that can tell you exactly how fast you are travelling. Would love to have had it in the car above when he "allegedly" went that fast!

Gonna try it in his EvoVI & Clio 172, my 106, oh and Dream Weaver wants to do his MR2 as well.

Carlos - wise up!! The VTS is capable of well over 112mph. I've been in many different cars at high speed and know what 140mph feels like, the VTS will easily do 130mph on the flat, it's quoted at 126 by citroen for crying out loud!!

Rich ace picture mate! I've seen that once or twice in the VTS, but never for long, there is something worrying about bouncing of the rev limiter in 5th gear!!!

Saxo Boy -

Ease up...

Read the post by carlos again, he said VTR not S, so he was right.

The 106 GTi is listed as 128mph & VTS 126mph, so both quite capable of doing 130mph and on the speedo with the error you get at that speed some cars read well over, as in the pic.

Need to get that GPS unit in mine to see how accurate it "actually" is, but I can't do 140+ mph in mine (as pic), so probably more accurate than that one.

Well pointed out Rich, I appologise! I did find it odd that someone was suggesting a VTS, which can get to 100 in 20ish secs from standstill would then run out of steam 12mph later

Saxo Boy, go and drive the Scoob. I had a VTS for a year and loved driving it, except the driving position & Head room & rattles. Although rattles down to crap servicing !!
I Have had my 02MY only a few weeks and the smile on my face never disappears !! Braking as well as aceleration, so more stable than a VTS

Wasn't to sure after short test drive so try and a decent run
