I was dealing with a Facebook related incident this afternoon - not terrorsm based - but a 20 year old girl has been posting on a 38 year old blokes page that he is her dad and introducing herself to his children and threatening to put up posters on the street he lives saying that she is his daughter (there's been no DNA test and from what witnesses have told me the mother slept with the entire male population of the village).
The daughter and mother then started a campaign on facebook explaining how they were going to ruin this chaps life as he doesn't want anything to do with either female.
Even better was when the mother started phoning and texting him as I took his statement.

I could just see it on the TV and oh the embarrassment down the pub. "Man found not guilty today for terrorism charges but was found guilty of stupidity for which he'll serve 4 weeks being a car park attendant at Alton Towers".

A far better charge if ever the was one to make sure he and his fellow 'stupids' think twice.

You know what I was getting at.

Funnily enough we had a message in our briefing today which stated that we could not use the Terrorist Act to look through people's bags, phones, computers, vehicles etc even if we expect them to be carrying a bomb.
The European High Court have decided it's against terrorists human rights to be searched for bombs or bomb making equipment
Ah well, we'll just have to let everyone get blown up as it's against the bombers human rights to stop him.
Incidentally, surely being blown up by a terrorist is against our human rights...

I can imagine you guys get more and more frustrated.

@ Lisa, i'd imagine by the photo and comments on the artice he has contacted the paper himself to either make a bit of money, get support from the public and make the police look daft or all the above. IMHO

Well according to the European Court, nothing. Though we could get round it using normal stop and search powers, saying the suspect was in a high crime area

Then ask for a harrassment warning to be issued so her contacting you becomes an arrestable offence

To be honest, I'd send in one of the bomb dogs and if Officer Mutley starts barking, I'd be hiding behind something solid

You are taking the **** right?
I mean, picture the scene:
1. You are at your computer and a little wound up about cancelled flights due to weather.
2. You decide you'll wax lyrical to your mates on your social site.
3. You make a silly, throw away, and pointless post.
4. You sit back to contemplate your expectations.
You conclude that realistically any of the following could reasonably happen.
a) nothing
b) a mate makes a counter comment
c) you get arrested
I'd like you to assign realistic probabilities to each of these - again, putting yourself in the moment when you contemplate making this twitter post.
You may not be good with percentages/probabilities. I'm a professional poker player with some experience of numbers, so I can perhaps help a little:
Probability of:
a)30%
b)69.999%
c)0.001%
FWIW, that is a probability of 99,999 to 1....and I feel I'm being generous.
In conclusion, I cannot comment on your opinion that he is a bellend; that is subjective. However, to suggest that the expectation is to be arrested and charged for this is quite laughable.
The whole thing is a joke! This is everything that is wrong with this country/world and it's only going to get worse.

This only came about because the power was abused though, didnt it?
It could be argued that police officers are now less able to do their job / protect the public, as a result of the abuse of the power to search by some police officers.

The way things are at the moment with terrorism I'm not surprised he was arrested. We all say things in the heat of the moment, but what he put was just plain stupid especially with the amount of people who go through airports on a daily basis.

But why arrest him at work (from where he is now suspended) in front of his colleagues (causing embarrassment), confiscate his laptop, phone and home computer (so that cannot do his internet banking, sort out bills, communicate with family and friends etc. etc.) and ban him for life from an airport without due (court) process.
Sounds like bully-boy tactics to me

If so, when he is arrested it will give the police a power to search and seize things from the place he was arrested at.
If the allegation is planning an attack then it has to be taken seriously and his whole background and lifestyle looked at.
