im on the advanced stuff now which is HNC, by the way do you have to do a project in the second year? sometimes called a IVA?
we had some troublesome lads in our class i used to just tell them straight, i werent there to make friends im there to learn and gain qualifications and this pays my mortgage i aint having some little **** making my life harder, they soon shut up and if they dont have a word on the side with them, dont let them dirupt the class to much or they will get worse
my tutors used to say the fact i was worried usually meant i was ok because i would put in extra work on the subjects, i used to think this was a load of crap until i went inot tests and passed them ok. Yuor certificates wont say at the end if you passed or you got a distinction so just make sure you pass and anything else is a bonus ok mate

Keep at it, sounds like your doing the work and putting the time in, it will all fall into place if you keep going.
Im fortunate enough to have the ability to learn well and generally be very good on my course and came first out of 120 people last year at a good uni. However unlike the people on your course I help others when I can, have an exam next week and me and a good friend from the course start revising together tmw as he struggles with the content of the paper and I dont so Im going to help him out. The same way that he has helped me out with a few practical things as he is definitely better in that area.
Dont worry about the age thing, a guy on my 4 year course was 38 when he started last year. He worked in a bank for 20 years but always wanted to be an engineer. He says himself its the best decision he has ever made! Keep at it and good luck for the exam!

Yeah, I'm of the same mindset - I'm there to work and gain qualifications for MY future. Making mates is nice but not my first priority. I've been told on numerous occasions that my work ethic in the workshops is really good and kinda helps the young uns to see what they should be doing. Just some classroom work has baffled me and I care enough to want to understand stuff rather than ignore any potential problems.

we had the same thing, the young lads never had a cluee how to use hand tools, i said to them that if i helped them out in the workshop then they would help me out with my classroom work and also to shut up, it worked. if it doesnt just pick up one of the handtools and whack them on the sly

Just to bump this. I took the exam after thoroughly revising as best I could. Got 35/48 marks so 73%. This was the highest in my mech group (9) and the second highest overall out of 70ish apprentices - highest being 42/48.
I'm pretty pleased saying it's been the most troublesome subject for me.
Can't wait for the advanced stuff (A-level/foundation degree standard) if I'm chosen to apply to do it
