Forester S Turbo modifications
#31
I am new here but has anybody here had any experience with ECU remaps or chip upgrades for the 2003 Subaru Forester 2.0XT?
By the way, is it still using the same TD04L turbo and what is the stock boost?
Thanks a lot and cheers!

Just about to purchase a S Turbo MY02, have any of you guys continued with the ECU remapping, I have enquired about PPP but they dont do it on MY02, seems its only on MY99 and the new XT.
Can anyone put me in touch with a relaible remapper.

Hi Mark,
Stevem2k is fitting an Ecutek to his MY01 S/tb.
I believe that Bob Rawle of BRD developments has already looked at Steve car and will be finalising the job soon.
I think BRD have a banner at the top of these pages.
Alternatively Power Engineering can help you.

My Forester MY00 STb has now covered 100,000 miles (60,000 with Ecutek re-map). Still goes very well (apart from a few problems with knock correction at higher ambient temperatures). However it has recently developed a rattle (from cylinder No.4 ). It is either small end bearing or piston. When I checked the plug the electrode was badly burnt (to weak a mixture / high cylinder temperature?). I understand that this cylinder runs the hottest.
The later re-map from EcuTek addresses some of the knock correction problems I think. Looks like engine re-furbishment is on the way!

Mark,
I answered your post over on subaruforester.com. Bon Rawle is going to do the mapping. I have just got a replacement recirc dump valve as chris @ PE also mentioned they were weak.
Nick, I think it was Matt's map we were looking at when we were at PE for the dyno and download of my ecu data.
Cheers
Steve

Looking at my first mod and I am thinking of a brake and suspension upgrade, before increasing power. ANy suggestions ie godspeed 330mm, or will the standard Subaru 4 pot be a good choice.

Your very limited suspension wise for struts and springs in the uK. There's some stuff from MRT downunder and over in America.
However, the US has gone for the XT in a big way and the old SF (pre 2001) Forester has been forgotten about.
You can get a genuine STi suspension set up from Japan but they cost ££££.
Impreza suspension can be fitted but have a couple of obstacles to doing a quick job and lower the car a lot.
What you can do to stop rolling about is a bigger rear anti roll bar, alloy link bars, strut braces, anti lift kit - in fact anything that can be done to an Impreza - apart from struts & braces.
Brake wise, the 4 pot swap is very easy - providing you have another set of wheels. The OEM set won't fit back on.
Impreza wheels won't fit (but the new STi will).
Look around for wheels with about an ET45 offset (ET42-48 seems OK) but still do a trial fitting as wheel spokes can still be too thick.
One favorite wheel are the 17" MIM Scoobysport wheel which is discontinued. It can also be found at Subaru garages as the old Brescia model, but again stocks are very limited.
Ther's a good Forester forum that may help with other queries on:

Dont any remappers take this tread as a gripe but hey there is plenty of "differing" technical advise been offered to me by what is probably considered the main remapping outfits. I’ve been informed by one that standard exhaust is fine to remapp and no real bhp gains from changing it, the other says downpipe, knocklink and boost gauge, remapp but will not pass mot emissions, the other says na you don’t need knock link or boost gauge or exhaust mods but you do need an up rated fuel pump and lastly one say you just change down pipe leave the rest of the exhaust, remap and it will pass emissions.
Shall i flip a coin and see which one to go for!!!

Ecu Specialist
Steves car was the first of its type that had been seen in the Uk and his ecu code had not been made accessible. It now has and we will be finishing the car before too long. It should be v good from what I have seen of the datalogs taken at PE by Merv when the ecu code was dumped. Fundamentally the ecu is the same as a MY99 Impreza, so I wonder .....
Re exhausts etc, simple rule is first decide on your objective, that will determine the correct course of action, best is to decat completely, knocklink is a must, panel filter replacing factory filter (Sti official uprated one is v good as per John Felstead uses)then remap. For MOT keep your centre cat (or borrow one as needed) and refit for MOT, no need to replace original downpipe.
Std exhaust is as good ... no comment !!
cheers
