Just put a PPG into mine as i got it dead cheap. Infact it was Angers above

Straight cut. Loving the noise and hopefully it will cover the power i will be putting through it.

If a 6 speed came up for sale at same price that i got the PPG i would of gone 6 speed though

Perhaps worth a look, not an overlook.
We use Elite, they're fine if you're not in any hurry. It has taken just under 9 months to make the pieces I needed for a Modena box that is no longer serviced by Teg sport.

My customer missed a whole seasons use out of that gearbox.

In fairness, their stuff is top class, just don't rely upon their delivery dates............

with a 5 speed PPG you should be able to get a quicker time than 6 speed on the strip imho

400 ish. but i like my wee wrx.
so around the 400 mark will do me fine for POWER ON THE ROAD.
i`v no intention of rushing out and buying a 6 speed or ppg.
but if and when the time comes i will have a better idea on which box to go for, cheers keith
PPG if or when you need one would be my choice at that level.

Would get Zen Performance to build it.

6 Speeds are strong, but ratios aren't the best unless you can pick up a very late one.

keith,

my 6 speed has stayed together well running over 500. don't know how long it will stay together with the new engine. Speak to Micheal at OMA, he will keep you right. If 400/400 is what you are after he might just recommend a 6 speed drive train.

Put an 04 STI 6 speed in my classic RB5 last year and can say it was one of the best mods i ever done....the ratios are brilliant and 6th is great for the motorway too

I have a modena dog box in my rally car , and although its good , I wouldn't want it in a road car , you would soon get fed up with it ! They are noisey and uncomfortable to use at normal speeds , town use ect , but are fantastic driving it 10/10ths

It gets stripped down and checked every 3 rallies , which is about 150 -200 miles , and usually costs about £500 in parts plus £200 labour , I have a plated and torque biasing front diff that I swap between tarmac and gravel events , reverse is a weak point on my box , and have buggered a few reverse gears trying to get out of ditches or hedges , but I guess I can't blame the box for ending up in them

Quite a few have recomended I fit the 6 speed box in mine , including the guy who rebuilts my modena , he says they are much stronger

Cheers Ian

The helical ones aren't very noisy at all. BUT, the straight cut versions sound like an original Mini in reverse....... 5th gear is a blessed relief and you can catch up with whatever is on the radio again......

How do the six speeds handle launch control, ie 1 BAR or 1.5BAR off the line? I'm fitting a Solaris in the new year so may as well switch on LC. Current clutch is a exedy organic, but next one will be exedy twin.

Anders, I have launch on my 400hp STi 8 JDM via Ecutek " Megarom." Launch is at 6200 and asks for 1.4 bar if l recall and is one wild ride. It gets launched in anger two or three times a month to demo it to customers. It's been on there about 2 years and after probably 50 or 60 launches is just beginning to feel a bit slack on the clutch - but the box is in good shape, no synchro faults, no noises. I launch it with full dccd lock and that still works fine with no unusual sounds.

I reckon they take it fine.

David, I won't be launching it that much but good to know it should be ok with 1 BAR off the line

Still can't comprehend how a couple of teeth on a gear can take any sort of launching, there must be some black magic going on in gearboxes.

Ah!, ought to have mentioned, I never do it on a dry road and always make sure that at least 2 tyres are wet/ damp [ doesn't seem to matter which two.] I run Proxes 888's and to launch in the dry at that revs / boost level is asking for trouble.

The trick is to get the wheels spinning which takes the load off the gears it also prevents bog down, which is still possible at 6200 and 1.4 bar , believe me, l've managed to do it......

lt's a really good fun thing to do and if you were at Disneyland in one of those infernal queues, I promise you would go straight back to the tail of the queue and wait patiently for another turn. IT IS THAT GOOD.

Ah, so I need to convert the redundant IC waterspray to a wheel spray system . I'm running P Zero Nero's, they seem to grip well, but they must be a big step down from 888's.

Will give it a try in the wet first...

Hang on real tight and hope the rev limiter works.

First thing you know you'll be well up in third maybe even 4th, as that is about the first time you'll be able to think - the before bit is all automatic.

Hand on gearlever ready for 2nd as soon as you launch........

GO FOR IT. [ I have gearbox spares aplenty ........ ]

I've done a few (less than 10) launches and look forward to a proper on-boost launch

If and when I break it, would a rebuild of the box with standard STI cogs be the best option?
