It's good to see that BC's are willing to fix this noise on the rear of the impreza, as most coilovers make this noise including ££££££ ohlins!
My nearside rear makes a clunk over potholes as well, but I'm not fussed about it really cos I know it's all solid back there.

I think its 5 turns from when the collar engages with the spring.

I really would advise to check droplinks at the rear- mine hae come loose several times and knock like crazy.

Put thread lock on this time which should sort it, but as you arent suppose to tighten these up too much, guess they will be prone to loosening after fitting new suspension.

Its 5 mm preload from when the collar touches the spring.
Stainless Nylock nuts on everything stops things coming undone

Hi Bren,

Are you back in the office?

Do you have a fix yet for the 01-02 cars? It's been more than a month without any update.

Thanks, Mark

The factory are in the process of producing their own rear top mount based on the original design that will work on the new type rear spring and will allow the new spring and OEM style rubber rear top mount to be installed on all 2000-2007 vehicles.

The first units should be ready in around 3 weeks

Has anyone on here stripped the suspension, especially the fronts?

Im looking to take the springs out and replace them, just wondering how easy it is to remove the top mount?

i have stripped the rears which are exactly the same concept as the fronts and it was really simple.. dont need spring compressors at all..

Remove the coilover from the car, slacken off the pre-load adjuster so he spring is slack in the strut and then just undo the top bolt remove the top mount and the spring jus lifts off the top..

Fixed it by looking at some of the suggestions on this thread. Turns out there was not enough preload, when I jacked up the car it was pretty obvious as the springs could be spun around by hand, just added an extra turn on the adjuster ring after they engaged the springs and now totally fixed.
So thanks everybody.
My coilovers are the exotically named Wangan Monoceros but the design looks very similar to AST, BC et al.

Happy New Year!
No way, I've got the same shocks and the same annoying problem Will give this a try as soon as possible!

Question New noise on the BC's

Bren,

Developed a new noise now, this time on the front nearside - it's a 'schwaa' noise that only occurs on compression over speed humps. All other corners are fine.

Any ideas? I'm taking it to Power Engineering on Friday if I can to have a listen - they reckon it's the coilover from speaking to them on the phone. I'll let you know what they say on Friday.

Cheers

We now have OE style rear rubber top mounts for the GDB's as well as the new springs for the 02 onwards.

If you use the springs and the top mounts together they will fit all GDB's.

We can do a package deal on the springs and top mounts for those wishing to try these on their coilovers.

For future reference all BR series coilovers for the subarus will come with the OE style top mounts as default.

Shouldnt these be supplied to those who already have the Coilovers on Bugeyes seeing as they have redesigned the parts due to the old ones not being correct for the job they were designed for, thus a design issue that should be sorted FOC not via even more money after all the issues you have had with them,
Infact after the redesign its open to trading standards as they have admitted they werent correct for the purpose you sold them yet you have been telling people it was their cars that were faulty, even though you were told last April it was MY CAR yet you still claimed it wasnt the BC`s yet it turns out it was all along,
pm me for my address for my new Topmounts and springs to be delivered.

Bren is currently on holiday, sorry.

I'm sorry but this statement is incorrect

The other topmounts were perfectly up to the job, but customers advised us that they would prefer the balance to be moved from performance to refinement. Hence we have made a topmount with increased amounts of flex due to the increased rubber, but it absorbs more noise. If you would like this downgrade in performance, with increased refinement we are doing a huge discount on these parts for you.

The kits are available in either design, to give customers more choice to get the kit most suitable for their needs.

There is nothing wrong with the old topmount, it just didnt absorb as much noise as some customers would like.

Thanks

I bought a set of coilovers from Apex in the group buy in March 2009. The rears knocked from day one. Initially they sent out replacement dampers to try and resolve the issue. Then I drove to the unit in Bradford and got Kev to come out with me to listen to it. Before I got to the unit I made sure there was a road in the local area where the knock would be heard. When Kev came out with me he denied even hearing any knocking noises. Then Bren said I would probably never be happy with them and offered me a refund.
After shelling out for the initial alignment, postage for sending one of the complete struts back and then having to swap the whole lot back over to my original set up, get the alignment done again and send the coilovers back (all at my expense) I got a refund..... minus the initial postage cost for Apex.

All in all I ended up about £250 out of pocket.

Now they admit there is a problem with them.

I wouldn't buy anything from them again.

I would not say there is a problem with the struts/pillowball units at all, mine are great and have been for over a year. It is though good to see that BC have engineered a new top mount for those who listen out for every noise.

I'm too busy enjoying the great performance, and to be honest a rather quick sti is far from silent and that's a good thing.

Very happy BC/Apex customer.

Have to agree with the above.
Whilst I appreciate that some people have experienced problems with the BC units, I am very happy with mine. There is the odd squeak at low speed, but I try not to spend too long in the doldrums
They have tranformed the handling and ride quality, and the service I received from Bren and the gang was first class.

Thank you, Ive been made to feel it was just me from the way I was spoken too and Ive had the exact same issues from day one and stuck at it trying to sort it to yet again to be told I have to SPEND more money as the NEW items I did buy weren`t right yet I have to PAY OUT AGAIN ! this cant be right when they have redesigned the rears due to the very problem I and others have been having and been fobbed off with the excuses it was OUR cars.
You would be a fool to spend more £££££ when its not your fault.

I don't think it's a question of people listening out for every noise. Some people have obviously got problems with the kit supplied, especially if one side seems to make more noise than the other. Simply driving over cats eyes can highlight this in some instances and easily point out the difference N/S to O/S.

If BC are making alterations to the kits coming through now for the newage models, then surely this means they've had enough complaints/input to realise it's needed.

You've clearly shown that you are a happy customer though Dave, I think you should have enough Brownie points with Apex to warrant some freebies by now

I just feel sorry for the people who have genuinely lost money from all the fitting, postage, petrol etc. Some seem more hard done by than others.

A search of ScoobyNet shows noise issues with almost every brand of coilovers, even the OEM STI >MY02 inverted struts were terrible!

My rear BC's have 'clunked' from day one. I guess it's subjective if it's a problem or not. Many people seem happy to accept the noise in return for the attractive price and excellent performance.

I wasn't happy with the noise and Apex have been good at finding a solution with the new springs & top mounts. Should these have been provided free of charge? Maybe but I'm not sure. The original top mounts did work, they just transmitted a lot of noise, same as the OEM ones really. In the end I decided that buying the new springs & top mounts at effectively cost price was the way to go.

I fitted the new parts today and they do seem to have fixed the clunking noise. Hurrah! I will have to pay to get the geometry realigned and this is very annoying. It would be nice if Apex offered to pay but I guess it's unlikely!

If anyone is unhappy I think Apex will still offer a full refund although obviously people will be out of pocket for fitting, unfitting, postage, etc. I don't think Apex are legally liable for these costs, they are only liable for the warranty of the product.

Think of it another way, if you bought a new washing machine and it leaked, the washing machine supplier would fix the machine but he wouldn't pay for your damaged carpet!

Cheers, Mark

BC Racing have released the new design to be able to satisfy the requirements of those customers who are not prepared to accept any decrease in ride quality or noise.

All new kits come with the new design by default, if the customer wants to upgrade to a more solid fixing then they can choose to do so.

If your an existing customer then give us a ring and we will do what we can do help you with the new replacement parts. 01274 683633.

Well I thought my nearside rear knock was the BC, but it turned out to be driveshaft nut needed tightening, someone else told me to check this.
My Bc's were from original GB on here around Jan 08 and have been ace, highly recommended.
Thanks to Bren and all at Apex
