BC's knocking!!!!

My coilovers have been fitted for about 3k miles maybe just over, and the n/s rear is knocking like fook  only strarted doing it about 4 weeks ago, so iv tightened all the nut and checked for any play, all ok:brickwall has anyone else had this prob coz I'm guessing the shock has had it?!

B0DSKI 09 December 2009 02:23 PM

Mine have been on since April and done 6-7000K since. All fine. Although they are a bit noisier than the OEM struts & springs. I put that down to the solid topmounts though.
Your will still be under warranty M8. Best get in contact with who you got em from.
Good luck :)

mr_D 09 December 2009 02:32 PM

my ohlins do this. now both rear ones have started knocking. im not happy, why does it seem like everyone have knocking problems with either aftermarket or origional shocks on these cars arrggghhhhhhh driving me insane

JDM_Stig 09 December 2009 02:38 PM

My BC`s have always done it

Just spoke to Kev and he has gave me a few tips on testing the shock, and even ruling out any other causes! Thanks Bren and Kev at Apex:thumb:

bren@apex 09 December 2009 03:29 PM

I dont know the nuances of the Ohlins units, I dont know how they go together or what their weak points are. I know what fitting issues can cause problems with the BCs, I know exactly which bolts might come loose and cause knocking, I know what spring preload they should be set to to prevent issues, I know how to test each component to determine potential points of failure etc.

I dont know any of that for the Ohlins :( You need to speak to your Ohlins supplier to get the after sales support you require.

No problem :)

mr_D 09 December 2009 04:10 PM

i didnt buy them and they were already on the car so was after any help or test advice just to help rule out any possiblities.j ust advice would of been a great help but i will try and find a company to help

bren@apex 09 December 2009 04:25 PM

Im not being obstructive, I just dont know the product: A general check list would include:

1) check the rear drop links, they are noisy when they fail and its a common weak point
2) If the kit doesnt have assister springs but does have adjustable bottom mounts then check spring preload, should be set to 5mm on our kits. If its excessive then it can lead to knocking.
3) Check the centre top mount nut if Ohlins uses after market top mounts. Also check centre rose joint if its fitted with them.
4) Check the top mount to chassis mounting nuts to ensure theyre all tight

Those are some of the check points for our kits but theyre full of ifs and buts for the Ohlins as I dont know the product.

Sell them and buy some BCs then youll get the proper level of aftersales you should recieve from a suspension supplier. Ohlins, pah ;)

mr_D 09 December 2009 04:51 PM

cheers mate. thats the type of info i need. the ohline have helper springs. aftermarket top mounts. they are also fully adjustable.

been like this for ages so i just need to try and find out for sure whats wrong.

one thing i know is that i can take them off, mess around with them and then they will be fine for a little while an hour or day or week and then they go again.

i do however have a rear stut brace as well which im thinking of removing to see if its that.

but appreciate your help. its so hard to try and get anyone to help.

im not an amature but i am running out of ideas lol. so every little helps as they say

Mr D,

Could you post/pm a couple of pictures of the Ohlins so I can see which ones they are so I can give you a hand sorting out your problem please.

Usually the import Japanese Ohlins which is single adjustable or full race/rally which can be 2 or 3 way adjustable.

Cheers,

Gary.

just a tiny note. my bros evo was knocking so change the topmounts. When had them both in my hand, the play in the topmount was so insignificant you couldnt really tell. But new ones on and knocking stopped. Only a tiny movement caused a big noise.

SiV6Si 27 December 2009 04:07 PM

Just to ad, my RB5 has BC coil overs fitted, mine also knock on the N/S/R shock.

I've looked at tightening up the system but it all seems to be as tight as possible the set up is only 8 months old.

Thats weird as its exactly the same on mine

wrighty338 27 December 2009 05:00 PM

are you sure its the coilovers that are knocking and not a worn bush or something else?

SiV6Si 27 December 2009 05:30 PM

my car recently had all the driveshafts, drop links etc replaced i have been all over the back end, but nothing is worn or loose

Had it checked at 2 different places and they both said the noise was coming from the coilovers.

SiV6Si 28 December 2009 02:08 PM

yea mine too, but when they jacked the car up to check them, all one mechanic could say was ' they never moved - when i jacked the car up the wheel never moved !! ' as if to say they would actually move up and down... Erm no mate they are coilovers and as solid a rock !!

but after that was said, nothing was actually loose.

greatgonzo 28 December 2009 05:50 PM

This is very worrying news:( as a lot of people on here have had these fitted due to the O/E shocks knocking. Now after £1000 later Knocking again
