From: Trying to pull a 10 second 1/4 mile running a standard 2.0ltr engine...
Been following this thread for years now
AJ is currently building me a 2.1 CDB for my V4 STi classic. It has all supporting mods currently required and if it doesn't, it will have them (I'm not loaded, just been working on it for 6 years).
MJ will be doing the mapping on a SIMTEK 2 - GEMS (Steve SIMPSON).
The block is being built for the capability of 600bhp, however, i'm a little more realistic and was hoping for high 4's.
I'm edging towards the SC46+ (Because you just can't help getting caught up in the bhp chasing). On this setup would you still recommend the SC42+ when they're available?

From a personal point of view i would say yes,im on the old SC42 Billet and running a standard JDM version 8 2.0ltr engine at the minute with every conceivable supporting mod.

When being mapped there was deffinitely more to be had from the turbo, but the engine was at the upper limit of its safety threshold and although it didnt complain and kept taking timing/boost,it would have been suicidal to push further.

And as kev has already stated the new SC42+ is aimed at people wanting a little bit more than the older one could produce,so it should be absolutely ballistic on your 2.1 with martyn mapping it,and as long as all supporting mods are present of course.

Hi,
42 Billet + would be my choice on a 2.1 why add extra lag for just a few more ponies on a sheet of paper you will probably never use.

Race cars I can understand but fast road cars, I have never in 35 years in the trade ever understood the quest for huge figures on a road car apart from bragging rights.

Keeps us busy though as very few people listen, it is so refreshing when some one asks for 350 BHP or 450 BHP and not the statement..............
"right I want 650 maybe 700 BHP",
what car have you got sir ??
" a UK saloon MY 2000 on a T plate",
This is gonna cost what’s your budget ?"
well I can get my hands on 2 maybe 3K and I am not to £500.00 sheets, just want it right".

Many times we have asked what sort of power the car is running at the moment, answer......
"375 to 400 BHP",
have you a dyno printout sir as I find it difficult to believe that on a TD04 ?
"No but it must be as it rips my dads Lexus apart and that’s 450 BHP".

Would sir like a free power run to see where we are actually starting from ?
"no thanks don’t trust dyno's and anyway I have to get off, running a bit late".
Sometimes we just have to give in......
Cheers
Kev

Cheers gents!!
My only therory was.....
I drive like miss daisy is in the back 90% of the time. My car is also my only car and a daily commuter.
My though with the sc46+ would cause additional lag but this would help in the majority of time due to typical driving.
Thanks for the knowledgeable replies, they're becoming a lot more far and few between.

Have just purchased a gt30 rotated kit and associated pipework/fittings from scoobyclinic aka kev
Now its a bit of a long trek from me to scoobyclinic for fitting so am using a local guy and instead of just selling me the stuff and saying good luck i have just recieved a email on a Sunday from kev with a rundown of what goes where down to the last nut and bolt
very rare to find someone willing to go beyond selling you the stuff and actually be willing on their day off to send you details of how to fit the stuff
in this day and age when a return phone call is the best you can hope for from some companies this has come as a welcome surprise
way to go the clinic

Quick question
Just out of interest on a sc38 what sort of rpm should I be looking at when hitting full boost, I have a sc40 and not seeing full boost till 4000/4200 rpm which is a little high for for me. Can give a list of supporting mods if needed but a general figure is fine.
Cheers

Well I have just got my hands on a sc38 which is been mapped in next week I swapped as the 40 was coming in so late was wondering when I should be hitting full boost on the 38..,
Mods :
Harvey headers + uppipe
Blitz exhaust system + bellmouth dp
740 Inj
Rcm induction
Hdi fmic
Apexi ecu
Lateral turbo intake pipe
Think there the main bits the sub is a 99 type r.
Cheers

Today I have an SC46 billet on my 2.0L fully built block with stock AVCS heads and have exactly 400WHP at 1.6bar with E85.
But I have complete set of twisted pipes that are not used.
So the question is what a billet GT30R 0.82 will do for me?
It is a 100% Track car so not a street car. (Time attack)
Any suggestions?

Depends on the rest of the setup but 600 FWHP should be achievable in my experience.
Ok, sounds good.
CP Pistons
Eagle rods
ACL bearings
ARP headstuds
FMIC
Tomei Equal length header
APS 3,5" exhaust
1000cc injectors
Autronic SM4 PnP Ecu
As said earlier, stock -03 sti heads and camshafts.
Does the heads flow enough for about 500whp?
What exhaust housing is to recommend 0.63 or 0.82?
On its best run mine with the SC42 did 439/385 on V-Power alone! Last run it did 427 and Simon has suggested to try meth but so far I've resisted haha!
.To the chap asking about "late boost" I doubt you'll find much to hit full boost much before 3900-4000rpm on a 2.0. Even the original vf35's don't do much better so unless you're going smaller I doubt you'll see much difference.

I would say a 2.1 rotated setup is the minimum you could get away with using the GT30/0.63 on,and this combo does work really well and is a very popular choice for many.
I personally wouldnt try and run anything bigger than an SC42 on a 2.0ltr,and if its a track based car i would go smaller still for greater spool and response as im sure this would make an overall quicker car on track.

Must agree with you on that one mate, mine gains 50bhp and 50ftlbs over the v-power only map and the difference on the road in terms of spool, response and overall performance is very very noticeable.

It shouldnt be laggy if you have all the correct supporting mods present and its mapped properly mate.
i`ve seen quite a few graphs of GT30 Billet 0.63 housing turbo`s on 2.1 powered cars and 9 outa 10 of them were amazing.
i`ve also been a passenger in one and the word lag never entered my mind,it was extreme to say the least and frightened me to death(im not a good passenger lol).
Even an SC42 can be laggy on the wrong car matey,or on a car that does not have the proper mods to make it sing and dance.
A properly modded and mapped 2.1 powered car and a GT30 Billet 0.63 turbo is a fantastic combo that is hard to beat imho buddy.

Yes mate its massive with a turbo like a GT30,it may not sound like much but the extra .132?? or what ever it is over the 2.0ltr does make all the difference.
It's mental that only 5% more capacity - just 25cc extra per cylinder - can have such a profound effect to the airflow!
But hey, we all dig it.

I got a built 2.5 and was really tempted by the sc42 after all it's rave reviews. Anyway I went for an sc46 instead. Keeping my fingers crossed for 450bhp on vpower and hopefully a bit more with meth. But it's the torque I'm really looking forward to any ideas what to expect?

If you fit top quality components you get top quality performance,if you fit ebay and macdonalds happy meal parts you get a poorly performing ticking time bomb.
The SC46 should perform out of its skin on a 2.5 with all supporting mods present, good luck matey i hope it all goes good for you.
Cheers pal, ive used good gear throughout my build so fingers crossed. Should make a nice road car I hope. Just a bit unsure weather to keep my rcm Venturi up pipe of go for a havey trick up pipe.
