The Fiat easily has the beating of all those FWD you list.

I've already said - the Evo was more fun in the country lanes and the Fiat is more fun on the motorway / A roads, yes more fun than the evo even!

I bet half those moaning about it have no idea what they're like to drive even. Just making assumptions as usual. Fair enough. Just don't moan when they kick yer butt! :-)

Funny how you never hear about them as a track car? If they were that great at handling then they would make a good track car as they obviously have the power.

They are not a car that u see driven aggressively IMHO so that either says something about the car or the people who buy/drive them. Subaru, Mitsi, Honda etc may not be seen as the best in build quality but damn I wouldnt buy a Fiat purely on looks and reputation. The buy eyed look maybe ugly to some but a manufacturer who makes a car as ugly as a multipla aint getting any of my money.

If you want to prattle on about superior italian looks then how about the 406 coupe by Pinnafarina (sp?) - now that looks the business. This is all IMHO but the Fiat does not look like £25k worth of car.

dunno if you're talking to me but in pretty much all my posts here I have said they don't handle as well as our Japanese friends, just pointed out that they are fast and fun on nice roads, and quicker than a scooby once you get shifting.

Neither I have praised their looks, ever

I reckon they would do okay on the track as the surface is pretty smooth. They can do the corners, its the rough surfaces that trip this one up IMHO. I'm sure I've seen FCT race series on the box also.

Neither would I. I would never have considered one. However, having had the use of one for over a year now I can say I am very pleasantly suprised with what a nice motor it is and how great its performance is. Sorry if you can't accept that.

Times change. move with em. You're talking about the Fiats of the 70s which were utter toilets.

All I would say is that on a motorway a fiat coupe would shat on almost any scooby - it's 4 seconds quicker from 60-100mph than a standard WRX (according to stats, but I'm dubious, nevertheless its quicker...), eitherway, I got shown!

ah. is the WRX the offical name of the new Impreza Turbo then akshaya67? That would tie in with that comment Diablo made about em being quite a bit slower than the old imprezas.

Perhaps an unmodded UK MY01, but there are *MUCH* faster Scoobies in a straight line than that. Despite the MY01's other virtues it is not at all even remotely quick in a straight line unmodded, and some warmed up repmobiles would give it a hard time over 60.

seen a standard one go around ty croes circuit in a very similar time (57~secs) to a 260bhp WRX (95), dry of course.

the owner is a regular on bookatrack.com days so see it for ye'self if anyone doubts it.

Now, I'm not disputing that the Fiat is faster than a UK scoob above 70 but when you're comparing it to a Lancer you think is about as fast as an EVO 6 then the Fiat should lose even at much higher speeds.
I've just looked at the Autocar test of the Fiat 20v Turbo (fastest test I've seen of this car) and compared it to the Autocar tests of the WRX STI IV, EVO V (never mind the EVO VI which is faster than both).
Here are the figures:

70 - 100 100 - 130
Fiat 6.6 14.7
STI IV 6.0 12.6
EVO V 5.9 11.5

How would the Fiat be pulling away then...?

Fiat Coupe, cheapest Ferrari in the world.................I love Luca de Monzemola. Pinafarina couldn't make it into a Ferrari so a star was born..........great car. Even shares some parts with Ferrari's made today....

yes the 'new' standard UK impreza is called a WRX and its slower than the classic version (which is slower than the Sti).

well, seeing as I wuz asked....

I didn't say my Evo was as quick as an evo 6. Once you're over 70 it would seriously lose ground to an evo 4/5/6 also. I said it was lighter with more torque (though a bit less power admittedly) and went like poo off the proverbial up to that speed.
It went pretty well over that speed also but not stunning.

Dunno where you got your times from but evo 5 is under 5 secs 0-60, not 5.9.
Standard evo 2 was 5.0 secs
Fiat 0-60 is 6.0 seconds.
No idea on 0-100 times. 60 - 100 should be quick. It should be able to do the whole range in 3rd on boost.

Next time I'm somewhere quiet I'll try it out if I remember and see what kind of times it does

Point taken about you Lancer Juan. Sounds like a great real world car with it's 'speed' in sensible places ie not all after 100 mph.
Anyway, look again at my figures as they were for 70-100 and 100-130...

ah sorry. My mistake
Those 100-130 figures. Are they in top gear or something? They are way way way too slow (Fiat has a 6th gear and is just for cruising. Nowhere near as much pull as 4th or 5th)

I know this is an old thread. Came across it when looking up information on the Fiat Coupe. I am from the US and never heard of the Coupe. Performance cars in my price range in Turkey are limited. Have been looking at Scoobys and Coupes. Did not thing there would be an article comparing the two but I found this one. Read the posts from 02. Looks like a coupe might be a good choice. Has there been any updates all these years later? Reliability? Performance up grading? Have never driven either cars.

Get the fiat. Aparantly acording to the guy above that posted 13 years ago its the cheapest ferrari in the world!

There's actually a chap in the town i live that owns a red one and he's swapped all the Fiat badges for ferrari ones....

yep never been a fan off these. your more likely to mistake it for a bus from the back rather then a ferrari!
And they call it a "coupe" but its got pillared doors
Fix it again tomorrow

13 year old thread.

There were not many quicker cars for the money at the time, finding a decent one today won't be easy nowadays, they are a modern classic really.

Talking about swapping badges, there's an old guy in Nuneaton with a red Toyota Supra thats replaced the Toyota badges with Ferrari ones

Thirteen years ago I fitted an Audi S3 BAM engine into my Mk2 Golf. Would of decimated that Fiat, and the doors would of stayed on.

Got any pics?? Always wanted to do this conversion, Had a modified MK4 GTi 1.8 20v last year as a run about, and it was bloody quick, would love to have put that set-up into a lighter shell like the MK2 Golf!!

Havent got any engine bay ones on this computer, but this is her...

The problem with 300bhp in a Mk2 Golf is the lack of an LSD, so understeer is a killer, never plant it going round a roundabout otherwise you would end up in the wall Quaifes where so expensive back then, especially when your a teenager!

I owned a Fiat 20vT back in 1999 and loved every minute of it, sold it in 2001 to buy a Landrover Freelander because the Mrs said we needed something to put the dogs in............WTF did I do

Yes they are hard to find. There is a 4 cyl Turbo model available. Are they that much different from a 5 cyl Turbo?

I've had the pleasure of owning a 20VT (well 3 of them) as well as 3 Scoobys (Classic, Blobeye WRX and Bugeye STI). IMHO a 20VT is a totally different car to a Scooby. Both have their merits and both have their negative points.

20VTs are long in the tooth now, the last one rolled off the production line in 2001. Rust is a big issue at the moment with lots of cars being scrapped because of it.
