Classic specs
For a track 'toy' forget the UK 5speed cars, the gearing is far too long and you're forever finding yourself in the wrong gear.
At somewhere like Brands Hatch, Cadwell and Oulton Park the RA gearing is ideal, Snetterton and the long straight of Bedford are the only real places you could do with another cog and it's only on those two sections, the rest of both circuits suit the gearing.
Shame you missed this ark.........Type RA track car for sale It consistantly finished ahead of YVMs old 2.5/20G 380bhp/400ftlbs classic in the ScoobySprint series
It will be back up for sale mid November albeit in standard specification unless someone requires any changes, ie, I have a set of 'track spec' Leda coilovers that could be substituted for the standard suspension.
For a track toy I would suggest.....
A classic based Impreza
Minimum 4pots with DS3000's
Coilovers
KnockLink
Hybrid FMIC
550s
TD05-16G

Zak, the RA would appear to be far more track focused, as you know mine was intended as a fast road car (leather interior, big sound system, etc).
That said, i'm sure it could have given a better account of itself in more capable hands?

Thanks for the advice Zak. Did you buy the pink puff then? I`ve had my eye on that for a while hoping it would`nt sell before I went to snetterton to see what a track day was all about.
Now I`ve been I`m hooked. You have`nt got a suitable toy kicking about then that you want to sell me very reasonable of course?
You had a red wagon when I was there last suppose that`s gone.
You reckon an early Sti redtop would be geared wrong?
I can`t find any really detailed spec on the different models gear/diff ratios etc or which ltd models had redtop eng`s.
Sorry the missus is still signed in on here

I assumed it was just for fun, Ross's car is hardly a track beast (
Rossy) I still think for the money a tidy UK car is a good place to start. I couldn't give a monkeys about building Time Attack level cars tbh, there's always gonna be someone faster with more money or more talent !For every day and track day fun build a punchy stripped out 300bhp classic, Darcy's car is supposed to be quick is it not ?

It's already been done, Steve Darley ran his 550 bhp wagon in 2007 and 2008.

Darcy's car is quick(ish - as there's more left in it) for a fairly standard car up the strip yes but get it on track with an RA of the same power and it'd be left wanting.
A UK car with 300bhp will run well of the speedo given a long enough piece of road so some would would deem this 'fast' but the gearing just isn't suited for track (without a high torque 2.5 driving it), as Ark has already said Ross hit 120mph up Revett yet an RA would be at 120mph half way up and running on the limiter the rest of the way.
There's no mention of TA builds here, just offering advice to the op from someone who's covered a hell of a lot of miles in pretty much most Impreza power/gearing combinations on most UK circuits

Whatever you get Simon you'll have fun, most likely passing everyone on the grass verges
, trick is waiting for the right car to find you as there are plenty of ragged ones about. I have seen a few nice 2000 UK wagons from mature owners this year at good prices. I reckon these would be worth a punt for track day fun as they come with enough scope to play with without getting in too deep....anyway, the futures in pugs

They`re only lighter because the oxidization has set in.
