Unbelievable!
As I've still not had any response from South Essex Homes I decided to go and pay them a visit.
I was told I would be granted only 5 minutes of her valuable time. Not sorry to hear about your problems or how can we help to resolve this awful situation.
Unbelievably it's my fault that they cannot find my letter concerning my change of address.
**NEWSFLASH**
To those that believe that the Council/Housing Authority have to hold onto your goods for 28 days....WRONG! At least according to South Essex Homes that is.
The lady there assured me that the contents of my Garage is thrown away that day
When I asked why they hadn't taken payment for August & September they didn't have any answer.
Why didn't you call me I enquired. We're far to busy to call you was the response.
But you had the time to send out 3 letters to the old address and spend hours clearing the garage but not a few seconds to call me direct?
According to their own T&Cs they are supposed to allow 28 days from the Notice to Quit which was sent out (to the wrong address) on the 2nd September 2009 till they forcibly clear out the Garage/Lock-Up.
They were gracious enough to grant me an unknowingly 13 days
So far, of what property I can remember was in there totals in excess of £15000
I've contacted my local MP as well as enlisting the services of Chris to recover our losses. Although it's clear this is not going to be resolved as quickly as we would have hoped

According to their own own information the letter was sent out dated 2nd September 2009.
I'm still completely blitzed over this whole affair. I thought most of our belongings would be returned with a few valuables going astray not our entire contents going walkies

Andy,
still gutted for you, and understand your angst,
but leaving £15k of 'stuff' in a lock up is prob never a good idea?
Ain't hindsight a wonderful thing?

Neil, firstly as Nate says it's not till you start putting things on paper that you realise the value of what we had stored in there.
Besides why not? I wasnt expecting some dumb@rses at the Council to wipe me out

I am pretty speechless tbh. What if the tenant had been an older person, perhaps has died or was in hospital and wasn't able to respond to correspondence ? You can't just bin someones life just like that, it's morally wrong regardless of due process ! This reeks of dodgy dealing, the council are bound by so many policies I can't believe this doesn't contravene one ?

Stu that makes two of us.
When I got back in the car I was staggered at the way I had just been treated.
The attitude is unreal especially when it's their errors that have caused this whole sorry mess. if I had not bothered making payments I could have some understanding but this is just beyond the pale.

It does, not a policy, but the law. the tort (interference with goods) act of 1977. the council are not above the law.

I do realise how easily things add up. In fact it worries the hell out of me when I get forced to value my 'stock' and tools.
Clearly you do not expect the ridiculous situation you find yourself in to happen, almost like a comedy sketch, apart from not being funny.
I guess the point I was making was that leaving stuff in a garage on your own property is risky enough, (I've had stuff pitched out of mine), but I assume yours is similar to Nate's and therefore a bit isolated and therefore more at risk of being broken into.

Although under normal circumstances there wouldn't normally be that much stuff in there. It was purely down to the house move and the fact both Sam & I have (sorry did have) a lot of possessions.
For those of you that are looking at Insurance for your contents etc. make sure you have adequate cover as its amazing how quickly it tots up

....and pay to have your mail redirected. At least then you may have stood a chance of getting the alledged letters they sent you!
Do they treat all their rent payers like this? I would hate to get into arrears in a council house or flat - imagine what you'd come back to, or not as the case may be!
