POLL WHAT TYRE's ARE BEST FOR A SCOOBY
#91
I thought I had posted on this thread before but did not see my name as I scanned through.
I have now done over 10,000 miles on a set of Vredstein Ultracs and I am doing a 60 miles commute daily.
Nice tyre, even wear, good grip but I am not driving on the edge daily. When I am pushing on though I am not having any problems. Worth remembering that I am in a bog standard waggon though so only pushing 225bhp!

Who did the geometry..? Sounds silly, but as with always with these things there are specialists and then there are specialists..
Mine are still on, now over 20k/3yrs and I think the issues I've been having are purely down to the fact that I've been spoilt by their performance when they were at their prime, around 500-15k/30mths in my case. With hind sight they're currently no worse than the T1-Rs I had on previously.
Just a shame the performance has dropped off so much with a good 4-5mm of tread remaining..!
Now the question is, do I go for the same again (6mths ago that wouldn't have been a question) or try something different. The only other option seems to be Vredesteins, or maybe the pirelli nero(?) as fitted oe to the GB270's..?
At least I know I'll get 15k of astonishing all round performance from a fresh set of asymmetrics before they become mediocre..

I was thinking a lot also, like you say performance is very good, so tempted to get another set, but I decided to go to the PS2's even though they are more expensive, just to see the difference and hopefully straight motoring. I also plan some tracking this year and the ps2's should be ok there too.

It was done and re-done in 2 different places, same result. I have also noticed that when I accelerate it pulls a lot to the right now. Take my foot off the pedal and goes straightish. Really weird, checked pressure and is all ok. worse mentioning that I am running close to the legal limit of the thread hehe.

When you say you've had it done, I'm assuming this was a four wheel laser alignment? Were you present at the time and saw the adjustment taking place? Not wanting to point fingers but thought it was worth suggesting.
If the car pulls one direction under acceleration yet the alignment figures were all in the green, I'd propose there might be more at fault than the alignment....very odd.
It's not been in an accident in the past has it?
Oh and re PS2's - why are you so set on them? They're far more expensive than Vreddies and I doubt you'll notice the difference too much!
Oh and FYI I found the ride on the Sessantas was much more comfortable than the GSD3's they replaced.
I know some people have said you can't compare GSD3's and asymmetrics, but in that case I'd say you can't compare the asymmetric with the Vreddies as they're nearly £25 a corner dearer, yet most people seem to say they prefer them!
And Jasonius, HOW are you getting 20,000 miles / 3 years out of a set of tyres!?? Are you running standard geometry settings?
I run the GRD fast road setup and I generally see between 8-10,000 miles off a set and I don't rag the car all day long...

I obviously don't drive it hard enough often enough, lol..
It's same with brakes, although I did need a new clutch at 50k..

jasonius you getting soft in yer old age! LOL.
Mind you, i have had my asymmetrics on mine for 22k miles now! lol. They went on in summer 2008.
And yes, i am a slow driver for most of the time so that really does explain my long life there.
Forgot to say, they still all got 3mm left on them now! Hahahahaha

I work for a tyre (Toyo/Kumho) dealer and get to try a few different sets of tyres a year, Mainly because I trash a set every few months. Given the choice (no freezing weather) I would run R888's all year round, Although I'm hoping to trial a set of V70A's soon.
When it's too cold to use the R888's I run Conti Sport Contact 3's and find these a million times better than T1-R's. Much stiffer sidewalls and way way better grip in the wet. I've yet to try the Conti's on track but i reckon they will out perform most road tyres.
Pics of T1-R's after a very hard trackday at Snett. You can see how the soft the sidewalls are as the tread has literally rolled over on itself and even scrubbed the lettering off the sidewall
Although to be fair I was going in to the corners a little too hot!

It'a always been rated highly in comparison tests and when I've had them on other cars (SC2's iirc) they've been very good.
Being 'none' directional they should suit newage Impreza's well..
FWIW Mike Wood of Prodrive has previously claimed that heavily directional tyres didn't suit the later/heavier newage cars during PD's extensive testing a few years back. Gave the handling a 'squidgy' characteristic..
After a quick google 225/40 18 XL's can be had for ~£110 it seems, which is not too bad IMHO.. I know Vreddies can be had for a bit less, but TBH I'm not keen on the asymmetric/lop sided (l-r) tread pattern..

This is one tyre I've fancied trying..

Trust me when I say the Vreddies are an awesome tyre. Couple of guys I know track their cars, switched from Goodyears and Toyo T1R's to Vreddies and never looked back. I had Eagle F1 GSD3's on mine - the Vreddies are a couple of quid cheaper each but far far superior in terms of grip and (surprisingly) comfort.

no, i have run or tested on a newage Scoobs
Personally I prefer in orfer
On lighter classics 17" tyres work great but not so great on heavier newage Cars or in 18" format and Vice versa
Tony
Personally I prefer in orfer
- Bridgestone RE070's
- Dunlop 600
- Pilot sport 2 (1#s were pants).
- Perrilli 6000??
- Vreidestien (buget tyre but not budget grip)
- Toyo 888's (too soft, too little tread & too expensive)
- Goodyear GDS3. (Great winter tyre but didn't last long in dry weather)
- Bridgestone RE050
- Toyo T1R#s (safe road tyre not great grip)
- Bridgestone RE040

Sorry to resurrect this again, but its tyre change time again (having trashed one pair on the hill climb with a little bank interface, and just hit a rock trashing another tyre the other day.).
I was thinking of the Yoko Advan Neova AD08, as they seem to get rated by the Evo boys, and are on list 1a for hillclimbs. Has anyone tried a set? Evo didnt seem to rate them, and kind of get the impression that they are suicidal in the wet!
