Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric in 215/45 R17 on my 1993 WRX saloon.

It don't surprise me they're leading the poll thus far - great all round tyre at a fair price.

I suppose those that will never do a track day will vote a little differently than those that do. It'd be interesting to see the results if there were 3 categories: 'track day only', 'road use only' and 'combined road and track use'.

I would imagine, that the track day inclined ones among us will vote R888's or RE070's, those that dont' more likely T1-R's (on price more than anything - although I believe they have gone up a little since I last bought some) or Eagle F1's.

Personally, I think T1-R's are toilet, never tried Eagle F1's. Had Michelin PS2's on the beemer which were good but were hideously expensive.

My new scoob has new RE070's on, and I'm so impressed with them so far (only picked it up on Friday evening), havent been on track with them yet though. When they ready for replacing, I'll be going like for like as I dont have 2 sets of rims, which puts the R888's out for me as I need a bit more wet weather grip than they give, otherwise if it was just for the track, I'd def go for the triple eights all day long.

Yeah, many people will buy on performance per £ - so T1-R's tend to fair well here (hence the 2nd place thus far).

Unfortunately, the thread title isn't addressing this performance per £ quotient.

I've always gone for T1r's, but mostly due to value for money and the fact I would never track my car... altho if I did I think I'd go for the 888's.

I'd like to try the Bridgestone RE070's, but cant seem to find them in 18's?

Checked Camskill as they are very very good for tyres and prices and they only have 17's available.

Anyone know where I can get a quote on 225/40/18?

Never done a track day so i can't say how good Goodyear's on the track but I'm on my 3rd Impreza and I've always had F1's on all of them.Great when dry but most important great in the wet.

i think power on and weight would play a big part in how good the tyre is

No mention of Dunlop SP9000 or Avon ZZ3? both good tyres I've had on other cars Avons being the best all rounder. Anyone tried Falken ZE912 BMW mates swear by them for value. In any case you should always reserve jugement until a few hundred miles have gone by and don't cane them from the start or they'll be trashed!

But R888's would have been £240 more a set and wear out fair too quickly for my pockets - although they are gret on the track! - i'll probably miss 'em.
Loved my RE070's, but the 235 size is not available in the UK - so I have a set of RS2's for the track. They are really surprisingly good! I've never tried R888's, but was put off by how fast they were reputed to wear on track. The Hankooks are probably better than I am, IYSWIM Good feel, progressive so you know how much you've got left - not much to complain about, even if the ultimate grip is not up there with the best.

I use F1 assymetrics on the road, having used T1R's before - no contest: I will NEVER use T1R's again! Especially as they are pretty much the same price in 235/45x17.

Just try one car with RE070's and one with T1R's with the engine on and car stationary, try turning the steering wheel with one finger in the spoke. you can easily with T1R's but will need 2 or 3 for RE070's

Thats a shame... I mean I've always used T1R's, but I'm always open to trying new tyres and as per prev post by tim hardisty, if the F1's are around the same price I think I'll give them a go

Just checked camskill for a price guide...

T1R's 225/40/18... £81.50 each

Goodyear F1 225/40/18... £108 each

Total difference on a set of 4 = £106

Not bad, worth trying

And "only" about £20 a corner different in 235...

A minor correction to what I said before: although the difference is still not that great, what I was recalling when i said there was not much difference was a comparison between Sessanta's and F1's, which is what I was looking at when I bought them.

I'm planning on going to 18's in the not too distant future and I've just seen the issues with getting RE070's in that size!!! FFS!!

Any suggestions for combined road AND track use?

I'd be a bit worried about using triple eights on the road in winter.

But I suppose I could keep the 17's for track and get some good road tyres on the 18s!!!

(DER!!)

I'd pay the extra £106 F1's or go Vredstien

I went to 18"s for a Brake uprgrade, and sold 2 sets of 17"s but now regret it,
Better option me thinks and get performance Friction pads and disk

Well, I havent tracked it yet so I'm not sure about how the brakes will stand up?

They've got Brembo grooved and drilled discs, and Red Stuff Ceramics (and obviously the Brembo calipers).

I will def be getting rid of the Red Stuff pads as I know they're rubbish from when I had my Type R, and replacing with either DS2500's or Yellow Stuff Ceramics (which I've used to good effect on track previously) and steel braided hoses.

I have to say though, the car stops really well at the moment, so I'm hoping I wont need to got for a bigger caliper/disc combo

As for the tyre situation, I think I will definitely be trying the F1's for the 18's (road only) and, when the RE070's are shot on the 17's, dep on how they've performed on track (how long they've lasted), same again or R888's

Had a set of 205/50Z16 F1's fitted for £375 at local tyre shop a couple of months ago. Good price for an excellent tyre.

Transformed the car from the REO-50's which were on it.

Good.

Cheaper than Asymm's too... and they come in 215/40 R 17 (Asymm's only come in 45 profile for that width/dia ).

Will defo replace the Asymm's for the Sess's when worn out...

Re the Goodyears F1's, I was under the impression that in order of performance:-

1st, Asymm

2nd, GDS2!!! (yes, the even older F1!)
3rd, GSD3

235/35/18 would be my preferred size, but as far as I recal they're MEGA expensive. Dont the WR1's have that size? ...I want them in any rubber!!!!

I use 888's in 225/40/18 on my summer road wheels and cant believe the grip

I also use T1R's on my 17's drag wheels and get 0-60ft in the low 1.6 secs and not alot of spin, so they do there job in a straight line, not so good on the bends unless i keep the psi alot lower than recommended
