Lol have to admire Apples marketing team - they know how to sell gadgets that lots of people seems to want.
Wether they are best in the market or not is up for some debate.

They are far from perfect. The keyboard does take some getting used to. The other gripe is non user removable battery. Even my 5110 nokia allowed that! I guess that to make it nice and thin they stopped this. I woul prefer more girth for a user replacable battery
From reading thru this, I think the answer to myself is that there is no big deal, just a good all round phone for some people.
I really don't think i could justify one to myself, I have less against the phone and more against the rediculous cost of o2's tarrifs on the Iphone.

At least in the UK you have other GSM networks that you could unlock the iPhone and use. Here in Canada we have Rogers and Fido. However, Fido is part of the Rogers network so it's only actually one network. Bell, Telus, Koodo, Virgin and Solo (think Solo is Bell though) are not GSM. Thus there is no other network one could switch to.
Therefore, if you want an iPhone, you HAVE to use Rogers. The call pricing isn't too bad, but Rogers is well known for being very tight when it comes to data plans, and they have obscene roaming charges. Also, their upgrade policies are not user friendly, let alone the fact you have to get a 3yr contract.
Here is an example for you.
A chap kills his T637 and needs a replacement, he (foolishly) gets a w200a for $0, but has to renew his contract, thus is locked in for 3 years. This is in Feb 2008. The iPhone 3G is released later that year. The chap thinks it might be nice if he could get one.
He knows that he will not be HUP (Hardware Upgradable) for another year due to getting the new phone in Feb. He thinks that Rogers will be like AT&T and give existing customers who aren't HUP a nice path to the iPhone, perhaps something like a flat $50 charge, plus the price of the phone of course. Alas Rogers, or Robbers as they are known, are not friendly to their existing clients (the chap has been with Rogers since 2003).
Rogers states the only way to get the 3G is to cancel out of your existing contract. As you're within the first 12 months of a new contract the ECF (Early Cancelation Fee) will be $400. You will then need to start a new contract to get the 3G.
Suffice it to say that the chap is less than pleased about this, and thinks Robbers are, well a bunch of gits who don't care a jot about their existing customers.
If you had not guess, the aforementioned chap was me, and that's the reason why I didn't get a 3G. I waited for the 3GS, at which point I was HUP, however, Rogers are still *******, why? Well, prices of the 3GS should have been $299 for qualified customers. However, there is a catch. To get that price you have to have a monthly bill that is over $100 pre-tax. This was for the account not a single number, so if you had a family plan it would take that into account. I didn't have such a plan, I was on the lowest plan I could get, a 200 minute plan (I don't get anywhere near that in a month), and with taxes it was about $56 per month. Thus I did not qualify for the $299, the phone was $399. Plus a $35 admin fee (which I complained about and they waived).
Data plan was, thankfully not too bad, think it's something like $20 or $30 a month for 6GB, whereas their other plans are something like $25 for 500MB with a 3 cent per additional MB charge. A bit steep I think.

I think thats very similar to our prices over here Markus. From doing a bit of research to get a free 3GS ya need to be on a £73 price plan which is in around the $100 mark.
Markus, although I like the iphone its not worth all that? There are loads of phones out there now that do internet/music etc and a 16gig sd card is cheap as now. I'm going to try an HTC touch pro2 next week and see if I like that. I think the only thing I would miss is the toys etc on the iphone but since mine is unlocked all networks I can drag it with me anywhere.
I didn't know, i don't own one!
The only one i've used had a big rubber sock over it, so i didn't get a good look around it.
My mates one (and he loves it by the way) didn't set the world alight for me, his is the standard 3g version, i just found it very bulky. Now I admit this is a very naff comparison but it may let people come close to understand my confusion of the Iphone. I currently use a Sony Ericsson T303 my old Nokia Classic phone met his maker after a fight with the missus
but for me the T303 does all i want from a phone, i have yet to really feel the need to go on the net whilst out(i'm on it enough in the house ffs) but my phone and my ipod nano take up less space in my pocket than my mates Iphone.
One other thing i didn't notice, does the Iphone have a proper headphone jack as I do love my Sennheisers very much.

if you have never owned an apple product you haven't experienced the joy of trying to get a replacement of a duff product a month outside its warranty period.
they seem to be the digital equivalent of a kwik fit exhaust system -- guaranteed for 12 months – coz it has a useful lifespan of 13 months.

You do realise most/all modern phones do mp3's and take micro sd cards so there is no reason to carry an ipod? I use a set of gear4 bluetooth head phones and I think the quality is much better than most of the headphones I have used

I have the latest 3gs version and it's the best phone I've ever owned, blacksberrys,n97's,htc etc are no match to it the apps available are endless and with 3g Internet you can literally do anything you would on a normal windows or mac based computer whilst on the move you can even dyno your car with the dynolicious app it uses the inbuilt g-sensor
I'm really struggling at the mo to find reason why people are so hung up over getting an Iphone. By the looks of things you either get a free old Iphone with an overly expensive semi decent tariff or pay a small fortune and get an overly expensive **** contract?
So explain to me why people are so eager to get this brick sized heavy, gimmicked to the hilt phone? I've seen the Nokia 5800 about now and I really am unsure what the Iphone realistically offers over it.

I think the iphone makes more sense if you have a Mac and I can't really see the issue over tariffs that everyone whinges on about (if you take into account what you get inclusive on the iphone tariffs
don't get them, I must admit, ditto i pods- because all modern phones do the same as and I player/pod thingy.
have to smile at the second gen I phone being advertised that it now shoots video.
- haven't we all had phones that did that better for years ?
I've a 2 yr old SE cyber shot- its got a 5 mp camera that is really good, ditto the video.
I phone- isn't it only 3 mp ?
so far I've got about 400 music tracks store on it too and it's better that a damn I pod- because it has a radio too !!!!!
all for free on a contract.
its super slim too- as oppose to house brick sized.
i think its a youngster/geek/up manship type of thing.
at the risk of being shot- its a bit like this watch obsession on scooby net.
what the hell do a I need such a watch for- when I've got a clock on my phone/car etc

How's the internet and email on your SE cybershot?
And I'm going to take issue with your comments on the camera function. OK, its not bad for a phone, but its certainly not a "digital camera that makes phone calls" irrespective of what the sales pitch may say.
Having had two cybershot phones, compared even to a half decent digital compact, the quality is poor (due to the sensor and specifically lens technology in the phones) and compared to the iphone camera, there's not that much of a difference tbh. both are fine for quick snaps, but that's about their limit.
I'm not knocking your phone (my two were great, and I'd recommend them) but, and my first question is a bit unfair as I know the answer (which is "crap", by the way
) but you are not really comparing like with like.
