Seeing as I started the idea I had better pledge my tenner...and an extra ten if Mr Lateral wears the full Banana Man suit for the majority of SSO too

You would! But Id suspect youd have a good go! - you and Paul allways manage to get me in a state at yours.. its that cupboard in the kitchen that finishes me off though!

Ooooo just you wait till next time. Forget Sambuca and Tequila, we have Chinese hardcore alcoholic substances now

No its not rice wine! Paul's best mate lives in Nanjing, he bought us gifts last time he came back for a visit... 1 bottle is a rice liquor the other is made from something else (he wont tell me what till we have finished the bottle)... They are both the strongest local hooch you can get

After a couple of weekends off, i finally had the energy and enthusiasm to pull the motor from the car, and start and strip it down. Mark came up on the 15th and we stripped the engine down, inspecting everything as we went along.
Big end on number 1 had failed, and was very close to total failure, ie rod exit stage left. All the bearings had taken a complete battering, and there were fragments of bearings everywhere, including the heads.
No point stressing over it, the damage was done. So we spent the rest of the weekend stripping down the block, heads and anything else, and thoroughly cleaning them so that they were ready to build back up the following weekend.
The weekend of the 22nd came upon us and we, being Mark and I, built up the short block with a new crank, new rods, and new bearings, checking all the clearances meticulously, so the block was done.
Along came the weekend just gone, 29th August, and in the morning i set off reattaching the heads and all the ancillaries so that by early evening the long block was done and ready to install. While this was going on David made a new gearstick surround out of carbon, so that it could house the cal switches for the ecu, and they were easy to hand.
After a long day, we were joined by Paul and Liz from Zen, who had come up for the weekend for a bit of fun and to help out. Needless to say, a lot of alcohol was consumed, even Mark had some! and by 2am Sunday morning it was bed time, as we were all in a state.
I woke up at 6:30 and decided to get up and crack on with getting the engine in. by the time i saw signs of life from the others the engine was in, and i was starting to reconnect all the plumbing. Mark soon started to help. Then David joined us. Sadly Paul was feeling somewhat worse for wear.
It quickly got to the stage where the engine was ready to fire, and at roughly 1pm, the engine fired into life after being fully primed. Job done, now the next stage, whack it on the trailer and nip down the road to York Raceway and have a shakedown.
We arrived at York at 2:30, got signed on, and at 3:30 i found myself at the line ready to go. I do a manual launch, and my hand stayed well away from the handbrake, ran fairly gently to ensure i got to the end. The result was a 10.8060 at 133.58mph. Not bad!
I am soon back at the line and try a little bit harder this time, and run a 10.6248 at 134.8mph, excellent. Check the car over and everything is sweet. Paul is busy checking the data logs, tweaking bits here and there, and we decide to try and setup the launch control.
This brought with it a few teething issues i wasnt used to. The car started creeping on the line, so my 60fts went up to 2.03 on the next run, but i fluffed up a few bits of the run, and the car had developed a missfire, resulting in a 12.18 at 93.36mph.
The next run was no better, recording 12.8589 at 92.62mph, and that was the last run of the day. The ecu had been pulling timing due to couple of heat issues, largely down to the header tank leaking and losing coolant, but also queuing whilst the engine was running.
All in all, pretty happy with the shakedown, issues easily fixed, back home and back in the shed, and Paul scrutinizes the logs. Header tank rectified by Mark, and ECU changed to bring the fans in at 78 rather than 88.
A quiet night this time, and Monday morning arrives, and off we pop back down to York for some more testing. Paul had fiddled with ecu a wee bit and we were ready for the first run at 11:16.
Stage, launch control on, and my brain goes into first across the line mode, and i set off with a 0.6 reaction time, 1.8 60 ft (on Toyo R888's), but when i go into 2nd i have misfires again, so abort the run, then decided to floor it in 4th to see if the miss fire is there, it had gone, and I record a 14.09 @ 113.74.
Back in pits, Paul and I have a conflab, whilst David checks the plugs and Mark refuels the car. Paul makes a few changes and we are soon ready for the next run.
I stage, but this time do my own thing, no racing, just me. Launch control in full effect, car starts creeping forward so go when i wasnt really ready, pull a 1.7011 60ft, clean but slowish changes up through the box, pull 6.6139 and 109.26 at the 1/8th, then hit 10.0609 and 143.39 at the 1/4! Damn thats close, but i knew it was a super run by any stretch and improvements could be made.
Another conflab back in pits and a bit more of a tweak by Paul, levels checked by Mark and David, and we are back out again. This time, i had told Paul i wanted to run on the prepped side of the track that the pro cars were using, as the concrete side was perhaps hindering the launch. A poor attempt at a pre launch to clean the tires and i ready to stage.
Launch control enabled, but this time i am going to stage on the handbrake to stop the car creeping. Green light goes and i release the handbrake and off i go, in total shock at the brutallity of the launch, i grab 2nd somewhat slowly but cleanly, still in shock at the performance, i go for 3rd and bounce, it pings off the dogs (i was too quick back on the power) same again when i go for 4th!! Damn!! 1.5401 60ft, 6.6150 1/8th at 106.63, and 10.4270 at 130.44 at the quarter!!
Soon we are ready for the next run, no adjustments made, i just need a clean run. Repeat the launch, but fumble 2nd after holding 1st too long, the rest of the run is clean. 1.6759 60ft, 6.62111/8th at 110.83, 10.1000 1/4 @ 141.910! Damn it.
By now the pressure had mounted, everybody was expecting a 9. One of the organisors came up and said we had won the Jap Shootout, and needed to collect a trophy on the line and then do a demo run. I asked if it was ok to do a full run and he said yep.
I came into the strip, and was told they had lined up someone to give me a bit of competition, to see if i could get a 9. I collect the Trophy, and get back in the car with David and Paul doing the final checks.
Showtime! The competition was already staged, a Celica GT4 that had run low 11's all day. So i go into race mode, i get the pre stage light, hold it on the handbrake, activate launch control and creep to stage using the handbrake, by now i have 1 bar of boost on the line, the lights go green i am off, grab 2nd effectively (logs showed 0.17 gearchange), grab 3rd quickly and smoothly, **** this is quick, car is squirming up the track like a drunken idiot but i aint lifting, i change to 4th very quickly as i go through the 1.8 and buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, its clattering the limiter. What have i done!
At this point i am freewheeling and cant hear a thing other than wind noise, have i killed it again , i tentatively press the throttle to see if there is anything there, the engine perks up, so its not that! I know whats happened! I pull off the strip and on the return road pull up in a safe place before my momentum runs out. I ring for recovery, and David and Paul tow me back with the engine purring sweetly.
The run
1.685 60ft
6.5559 1/8th
112.510mph @ 1/8th
10.7952 1/4
100.200mph @ 1/4
Damn, it was the quickest run to the 1/8th, what could it have been! On the trailer and back home!
The damage, a snapped input shaft, so i now have a very expensive clutch alignment tool
So there you have it, you are up to date, just waiting on a new gear part, and roll on Scooby Shoot Out when we can maybe turn the boost up, and try the nirtrous in anger!!
