That will be the fault of Kapersky, not W7. Mine's lightning fast with Nod32

Iain is that version 4 of Nod? I had V3 under Vista which wouldn't work in W7. I am now using the MS Security Essentials app which seems very good. It integrates Malware checking with the AV and turns off the default win Defender.

I received my upgrade this morning (I was told I could get it for the cost of postage when I bought a Vista PC three weeks ago), I installed it this aft going down the upgrade route but it did say I could do a fresh and full install if I wanted. Apart from a problem recognising my USB ****ty modem which i've now sorted out, all else went well. It does seem 'snappier' like Bio says but I think the wife won't notice any difference over Vista, i'll update the post if she does

Edit

The wife booted it up and used it for an hour this morning. She didn't notice any difference

The 'upgrade' that was meant to use my original settings didn't quite work, it was a right PITA getting the 360 connected again, the network settings seem more awkward now or at least harder to find.

As this was a pre-release version of W7 that I applied my legitimate licence to, I decided to delete everything and reinstall (and reformat) this morning.

It is better, so perhaps there was something left over in the pre-release that didn't get upgraded.

after speaking to someone who has been to a recent microsoft exp in berlin he belives that there is very little between them. On a current spec machine vista boots quicker than win7. People that think vista is slow are probably using it on machines of specs not designed for it. Win7 is more of a tweaked vista but the vista name got a bad rep so was launched as a new OS platform instead.

I'm using that on my work laptop at the moment. Actually seems quite good, although I've not seen any independant tests yet.

I've got Win7 installed on 5 machines now (mixture of 32bit and 64bit). All of them run faster than they did when Vista was installed on the same hardware. More stable as well. Some are quick machines, and some are a lot older (like my 3 year old laptop). I've done some pretty intensive benchmarking on the operating system which also demonstrate the speed improvements.

Simply put. It's a better OS

Are you on a one man mission to try and prove something that anyone with a little computer savvy knows isn't the truth Just what have you got against Win7?

There are so many improvements in the OS that don't just affect boot time you know. Things like vastly improved memory handling, improved indexing, better segmentation of data (if a program crashes it's less likely to bring other stuff down), better disc handling, better caching routines, and it's a lot more stable.

p.s. Win7 boots somewhere around 20 seconds quicker on my desktop at home than Vista did on the same hardware, (comparing clean installs with only drivers installed). Boot times can be affected by many things, (including availability and robustness of drivers). If you are seeing Windows 7 boot times taking the same or longer than Vista, it suggests that some of the drivers being loaded are not exactly optimised for peak performance.

just saying the vista was never bad in the first place when used on decent spec machines, and rushing out to buy win7 may not be the a step up. I reckon most people would benefit from setting the machines up properly

lol shutup Tenby what's your beef with Win7? I agree though I did like Vista and no had no issues with it. But Win7 for me is a big improvement and it was a no brainer upgrading to the latest and best OS.

They are both **** for speed when compared with XP anyway, so whats the point in arguing about it!?!

Vista failed, so MS had to fiddle with it, because the vast majority of people thought it was tripe, simples.

Not entirely true. When you have added all the 3rd party utilities, services etc to do all the things that Win7 does out of the box, then XP runs quite a bit slower. If it's speed you want, why not just install MSDOS 5.0 (there's too much bloat in 6.0)?

Win7 is much more than just a fiddled around with Vista. It's based upon the same code stack as Server2008, and as such, inherits a great deal of good code under the covers. It's pretty rock solid, and quick.

Tenby, you'll never be able to "properly configure" Vista to run as fast as Win7. Not unless you rewrite a load of the operating system code to run more efficiently of course.

Only if you are willing to let google own host all of your data and don't want to run anything other than web apps. Should be good for things like Netbooks etc, but I can't see it catching on proper machines.

That was the problem, Vista had pretty high hardware requirements. I've installed Win7 on an old P4 2.4 with 1Gb of RAM and it runs better than XP or Kubuntu did on the same hardware. On my other machine (i7 860 @ 3.2Ghz per core, 8Gb RAM) it really does fly. And I've only managed to BSOD it once which is a bleedin' miracle !
