To scoobyc : re the trailer thing, I found out you can tow a train weight of 3.5 tonne without the trailer license... so the weight of the towing car plus the trailer and load cannot exceed 3.5 tonne and the towing vehicle has to weigh more than the trialer and load combined

But my dad has a pajero weighing around 1900kgs, a light weight trailer that can carry a scooby weighs 500kgs and the scoob weighs 1200kgs ... just over what I can tow! doh... plus need to carry fuel and tires I guess

Thanks man... yea the course is pretty cool if you like engineering and that sort of thing but its one hell of a brain ache when it comes to the maths and physics of it all! I did struggle with that part... so far its not been very motorsport oriented, just general engineering questions but they make them about car stuff. Wont learn a great deal of hands on stuff like I did on my last course but I'm enjoying it all!

Hiya Gaz,

Just replied to your thread on the Nippon Challenge/Subaru Cup forum. Really interested to see all the hard work you've done on your car so far. You won't have ANY trouble preparing it for the 'Cup by the looks of things.

Any questions, probably best PM'ing me on the NC/SC forum.

Cheers,
Rich.

Looks like you went for the bolt in option then... IMO there isnt really much difference between the two, bolt in is easyer to do and less welding.

Aye i had the same problem, and have just passed my trailer test So now i can tow a maximum of 3.5tonn

Its a silly law, only letting us tow 750kg max (unless you have something like a hummer, you can get away without doing the test)

Its true what people say about once you have passed your test once its hard to do it again after a couple of years... i passed after 3 tries.

Remember, the trailer load (MAM - maximum authorised mass) cannot exceed the cars kerb weight.

I found this site usefull to let me know what i can use to tow the track car:
http://www.uktow.com/towing%20capacity.asp#tab1

Ive decided that im going to be renting a big transit van from a local company when im going to do track days, then that will let me put wheels petrol and tools in the back of the van.

Just keeping my eyes pealed on a nice brian james trailer on ebay

Congrats for passing your trailer test Jamz... how hard is it? do they test you on your general driving skills or just the ability to nagotiate junctions, parking and corners with the trailer?

The car is pretty much fully stripped now, kinda sad because the interior was mint and seeing as it was pretty much my first proper car it had some memories in that car lol

I cant wait to get that cage in and try make the shell really clean and light!

Alright Gaz, cheers for that!

The trailer test is exactly the same as your driving test (well the driving part) and its not too bad to pass (as long as everything goes alright for you on the day)

First one i failed because some car tried to cut beside me on a round-a-bout, and the examiner thought i didnt see him (although i did but i was wearing sunglasses) and he beeped at me when the trailer back started to turn intowards his car

Second time i failed for NOT going into a bus lane :O

Third time i passed

If everything goes alright on the day its pretty easy to do, the hardest part i think is the reversing the trailer from one side of the road, to the other avoiding poles and into a box

I just picked my cage up for my track car today (well half of it as the other half wouldnt fit in too , so going back down in the van to collect the rest on wednesday)

Nice one Jamz... thanks for letting me know what to expect on the test, might book it for next week if I can find the cash.

What cage have you bought? same one as mine but second hand? is it FIA approved or are you not really bothered about that?

I was missing the fitting bolts for mine but the supplier is sending some out now and Im ready to weld the plates in place now but going back down to Oxford tmoz to sort out my uni house so wont get much chance this week to get it done

I purchased a FIA approved cage of a mate i know, who purchased a full shell with the intention of switching running gear off his current Impreza to the new shell, but wasn't exactly what he wanted... i cant remember the name of it though (will let you know on wednesday when i pick the main part of the roll cage up) I wasn't too bothered about it being FIA approved, as i'll only be doing track days, but I may now go into something a bit more then track days in the future... will see what the money's like at the time

I have all the bolts and everything with me now, just gotta give them a bit of a clean up as they are a little dirty

I take it you can weld then? I want to learn how to weld some time... Im not sure if the cage i have needs plates welding in place, as it looks like it comes with plates that bolt on the outside of the shell then into the cage on the inside... will be asking the guy i got it from when i see him on wednesday though.

Ill be going back to Uni soon, so will have a bit more time to work on the scooby during lectures

LOL everything you see that I bought was using the student loan and I got a scholarship which pays too... Most people spent there loan on pointless **** and pissing it up the wall so I spent mine on the car

Its not a dash dodger as such, the ones that are dash dodgers with the bend around the dash are not approved for racing as that bend around the dash is a huge weakness... however the 10pt OMP bolt-in does miss the dash, just, by having its front feet located just infront of the dash so no bend and touches only slightly... You'll see once I get it in

You mean one with the curved front leg around the dash... then I stand corrected, suppose its the main hoop thats the savior in a roll incident anyway.

Aye i think its more to do with the rear cage bit than the front...

Im going to have fun on Saturday trying to get it in the car :O

The whole rear comes as one peice, and its masssive... The lad i baught it off ended up cutting the b pillar to get it out of the car because he got pissed off at it haha... hope i can get it in without cutting and re-welding it.

If you look at the pic of mine, setup, above you can see thats only in two bits and both front and rear are pretty long/big and it took some thinking about to get the back bit in. Think I had it on its back then put one leg in through the rear door and had to rotate it around untill that leg was out the front door then tilt it upright and move it back into position. Wouldnt have been too hard but I did it on my own so struggled slightly lol

Got the welder in the shed now ready and am going to prep the body where the plates are going to be welded to this week so hopefully will have it in by next week!

Will feel loads better once the big jobs have been done! The rest will seem easy then... hopefully!

woop, cage is welded in... wasnt easy as the plates use such thick steel and the body is soo thin!... didnt help that the welder had been sitting for about 5 years and wasnt working at its best but its done the job. Will get piks tmoz once I clean it all up with a wire brush and get some paint on the welds before they rust.

The front half of the interior and roof lining!

Cage plates are welded in now and cage can be removed ready for paint and to mount door bars etc!

Air con gone too.... total it weighed in at 22kgs

Well done lad, would much rather read about these kind of builds than the" big budget let somebody else do the work" builds. Keep up the good work & keep the updates coming.

Yea thats the one thing thats putting me off and making me think that time trials, sprints, hill climbs etc would be better. Ok I can still crash but could do that on the road too but at least you know no one else is gonna crash into you or cause you to crash.

Cheers for the comments guys... more piks coming soon to include my new FIA Cobra seat, half painted cage and half painted interior!

Thanks,
Gaz
