Not too bad. I'm eligible for a hardware upgrade on my contract, so, depending on the price of the device, plus the voice and data plan pricing, I think I might get a 3GS.

 

And that is it .... I wanted other carriers in the UK as well as I'm bored with unlocking and playing cat&mouse but O2 just doesn't work where I live.

We'll ignore the Robbers, sorry, Rogers, side of things for the moment...

I've been wanting to replace my 4th Gen iPod for a while. It's a great device and I do love it, but I didn't want to get a touch as if I'm going to upgrade, then the iPhone makes more sense, as I could dump the iPhone and my current phone. The problem was always capacity, or lack thereof. 16GB isn't big enough for me. I've got 60GB on my iPod and I want to take all of my music with me. So the current iPhones simply would not cut it, however 32GB is a lot better. Sure, I'll need to slim things down, but I think it's time I did that.

Hopefully Robbers (there I go again!) will sort out the prices and give existing hardware upgrade eligible users a decent upgrade path. No doubt they won't have any information until the 20th of June I remember asking two days before the 3G launch and they weren't fully clued up on the pricing structure.

 

Cool, new iPhone, My contracts up in Sept too Gives em chance to iron the bugs out.

It just gets better, thankfully no front facing camera... pointless. Shame that 3.0 isn't released today I just paid €15 for internet in the hope it was out tonight! And a shame I just bought a new TomTom that holder is sexy, but then I'm sure I had a good reason for not having nav on my phone.

 

So they've done very little with the new 3rd gen iphone or is the hardware architecture all singing all dancing? The new SE will blow it out of the water.

 

Re-reading the features, the 'Voice Control' looks quite cool:

"The voice control feature in iPhone 3G S offers hands free operation for both iPhone and iPod® functions. Simply speak the appropriate commands into the built-in microphone or headset microphone to dial by name or number. With voice control you can play your favorite music by artist, album or playlist and activate the Genius feature by saying “play more songs like this.” You can also tell iPhone to pause the music, play the next track, turn on shuffle or ask, “What’s playing right now?”

 

I heard a rumour that people who have only just purchased a 3G will be able to upgrade for free - hope that's true

 

Okay a bit more digging on the net seems to prove my post above is wrong.

Seems there is no such option this time round.

I think O2 are seriously going to p1ss off a lot of their customers by insisting they buy out of their contracts rather than pay a one off fee to upgrade the handset.

Let's face it, OS 3. will provide some nice new features.

 

That's a new one! I'm pretty sure that the new SE will blow, but probably only goats.

Just like Rogers pissed off existing customers who were not hardware upgrade eligible when the 3G came out. If you were unlucky enough to have signed a new contract within the last year then you had to buy out of that contract at a cost of $400 and then start off a new contract and pay for the 3G.

That was the position I was in, I had been with Rogers for at least three years, and this counted for nothing. It was pay up the $400, or wait until I'm eligible for a hardware upgrade. AT&T was kinder in that they'd charge you $35 to upgrade if you were not eligible for a hardware upgrade.

This time round I am eligible, so we'll see what, if any, changes to the pricing plans there are, and decide what to go for, but I think I'll be getting a 3GS within the near future.

 

It's been confirmed the new iPHONE 3GS utilises the same processor and GPU as the Palm Pre.

CPU is the ARM Cortex A8
GPU is PowerVR SGX (7x more geometry and 2.5x fill rate of current iPHONE)

On another note, Palm have appointed a new CEO, who has come over from APPLE !!

 

So basically the upgrades consist of : updating the camera so it's in line with other mobile phones from 2 years ago, adding MMS, which other mobile phones have been able to do for the past 5 years, and tethering which other phones have been able to do for the past 3 years. And the Apple devotees obviously don't mind having their leg lifted for another $200 for the privilege. Progress, eh ?
I'm not really anti-Apple, I have an iPod Touch & think it's a great bit of kit, but how the hardcore 'fan' / consumer base can stand for having their wallets emptied on a continual basis astounds me !

 

Apple are now just in a 'normal' telephone release cycle -- and it isn't practical (or expected I would hope) for people to upgrade after just one year.

I would imagine that Apple will release a new phone every year, and for people to get a new phone every two years (i.e. miss one iteration).

Correct. It's part of the OS upgrade and does not require the 3GS, it'll work on the 3G, and, I presume, the 2G as well.

 

Very tempted by the 3GS. My old N95 is well out of contract and is getting a bit long in the tooth now. Anybody any idea what availability is likely to be like? Seems that O2 aren't taking pre-orders...

 

I doubt there'll be such a rush this time as there's no upgrade offer... so far. Shame as I would have splashed out for the compass alone.

I'm a bit underwhelmed by the iPhone upgrade. It seems almost like a holding position until next year. Although the only think I'd really like now is an LED flash. That would, IMO, make it useable for nights out and the general pics you take with a phone.

Unfortunatley, O2 are royally screwed up, and will no doubt lose customers at the end of contracts/their exclusivity contract. I have no problem with them making user payout their contracts to upgrade - you did signa contract after all and can't expect to break it without penalty.

But what about the original iPhone users who spent a huge wedge on the phone (unsibsidised) + a contract? I think they deserve some discount.

And worst of all - Thethering charges. £15 a month - WTF?! I imagine a lot of users just want to use it now and again - so why not have a soft gap of 1 or 2gb from their 'unlimited data plan' that they get with the iPhone. I'd be interested to see the legal aspect of offering an 'umlimited data' with the phone and charge again for it justr because it's tethered.

As it is, O2 are gonna have to do something special to keep me WHEN Vodafone/Orange get the iPhone.

As for the rest of WWDC - the new hardware looks fantastic. Firewire back on the Macbook 13" and an SD card slot. It's a bit annoying as I've been planning a 15" macbook Pro as I needed firewire - now the 13" has eveything I need.....but I like th 15" screen size! Would have prefered the express card slot as it offers more flexability - but I use SD cards a lot so I'm not too upset.

And finally snow leopard - doesn't seem to inroduce tons of new features but more stuff that will exploit the hardware better. Good pricing too.
