WWDC (Apple Product Launch normally)

What do people think will be released?

Certainly a 32gb iPhone, but what else?

Over to Markus :) ...

A cheaper alternative to the iphone (iphone nano) is on the cards i reckon along with cheaper tariffs to follow

Markus 08 June 2009 05:26 PM

Kicks off at 10am PDT, so that's in 45 mins.

My predictions? Obviously iPhone OS 3.0 will be detailed, and I would expect a release date to be given.

New iPhone, probably known as iPhone Video, due to new video capabilities, plus you don't want to duplicate the 3G designation as it would be the 3G iPhone 3G (the first 3G being for Third Generation, eg; 3G iPod mean Third Generation iPod). As mentioned, new video items, auto focus camera, front facing camera for video chat, and probably other things that no-one has picked up on.
A few different capacities, probably 4, 8, 16 and 32 GB. It's possible the 4GB will be a China/Asia only model and it'll be cut down via software. It's possible this cut down may also apply to other models too, thus allowing a slightly different user experience depending on the device you get. 32GB will be all singing and dancing flagship version.

Unsure as to wether the device will be released today, or if it will be a release date announcement. I feel the key will be the situation regarding OS 3.0 as I don't see the point in releasing this prior to a new phone coming out, as you would want to make sure that your new phone runs the very latest OS, without the user needing to upgrade.
If 3.0 was released today and the new iPhone was due in two months, then if there were issues with 3.0 then they would need to be fixed and then passed onto the production facilities for the iPhone, and it's possible some may be boxed with the older software on them. I could be wrong here as I don't know how these things actually work.

Possible mention of other updated products and maybe mention of tablet based Mac.

Snow Leopard to be given a release date, it won't have the "marble" GUI though.

One more thing... ;) That'll be Steve popping on-stage to say "Hello" and thank Phil and the others for a great keynote.

There is/was a Fido (Canadian carrier, still part of Rogers) advert for the iPhone 4G, which I think listed the price as CAD$99 - so about £50 - not sure what the price plans were, but it's Rogers, so it'll be still expensive data plans, unless they have decided to stop being money grabbing gits and have a decent data vs price plan. I'd have thought there might even be a PAYG option on the low end iPhones, would be nice.

Markus 08 June 2009 05:32 PM

MacrumorsLive

They also have IRC, though not sure if it's going to be used.

I've also got man on the ground at the keynote, who might feed me the odd bit of info.

ChristianR 08 June 2009 05:45 PM

i hope they do a iphone nano. the normal iphone is just to big for me

Markus 08 June 2009 06:03 PM

Seriously doubt it. It's a full point version number upgrade, and they are typically not free, usually about $129. No mention yet if it's Intel only, am guessing it probably will be, which is a good thing. It'll probably also drop Rosetta as well, meaning PPC is dead, another very good thing.

Safari 4 released for all platforms (Tiger, Leopard and Windows)

Dr.No 08 June 2009 06:48 PM

$29 upgrade to Snow Leopard from Leopard.... :)

Markus 08 June 2009 06:49 PM

Snow Leopard $29 for single user, Family pack $49. Not bad at all. Intel macs only. Release date September.

I think that prices is just for upgrades though, no mention as to wether Tiger users will need to pay more, and if so, how much. I'd speculate the full, normal, $129 for a single pack, which seems fair to me.

Now onto the iPhone!

adehook 08 June 2009 06:54 PM

whats that in pounds then? £19.99?

Seems AT&T isn't supporting a few things as OS 3.0 launch (MMS and tethering). This is very odd and worrying as it impacts on their domestic market, where you would think they would have everything going from the launch. Do I possibly detect that they aren't going to be the primary carrier, perhaps Verizon is coming to the party?

You need to check out GSMarena, Markus,

theyve been saying for a long time that the O2 / locked carrier partnerships are going to end early... the revenue streams are starting to dwindle

T mobile has been carrying test pages for the iphone on its European sites

which disappeared as soon as the press got wind.

Mmmm, Tom Tom - Turn by Turn directions app. I want to see how well this compares to my Garmin GPS.

boxst 08 June 2009 07:26 PM

Official tethering through bluetooth is pretty nice.

Providing your carrier supports it, plus, they'll probably want you to bend over so they can charge you more for using it too, *******s!

I think Rogers wanted $150/month for 15gb?

Steve

Markus 08 June 2009 07:45 PM

Sounds about right. Current plan is basically $100 all in, which gives you a whopping 2GB of data a month!

You can add a data plan to your existing voice plan:
$25 = 500MB
$30 = 1GB
$60 = 3GB
$80 = 5GB

All no doubt plus tax. For the 5GB thing it would cost me $130 a month all in, which is rather pricey.

Rogers is well known for shafting people when it comes to data plans, and given that they have a monopoly here when it comes to GSM (Bell and Telus are CDMA) there's nowhere else to go to if you could unlock your phone.

Markus 08 June 2009 07:46 PM

Ok, iPhone OS 3.0 is done. Released on June 17.

New iPhone 3GS - S = Speed.

No front-facing camera, outside looks the same, all new inside.

Dr.No 08 June 2009 07:48 PM

Here it is... iPhone 3G S!!!!!!!!!!

Markus 08 June 2009 07:49 PM

New camera. - 3MP auto-focus camera.
Video capture.

boxst 08 June 2009 07:50 PM

Mmm .. I don't care about the camera. Faster is good, although will lead to a split in Apps for different phones.

adehook 08 June 2009 07:52 PM

i hope they release them on other uk networks soon

Same here, don't use the cam on my phone, it's not a major point for me, though seems some MUST have it on their phones. pfft, whatever :D

next up Voice Control, yawn, another feature I have on my phone but don't use.

Markus 08 June 2009 07:59 PM

Most Eco friendly iPhone - Yawn, like I give a flying feck about that. I can still club seals with it though, right? :D
