My first reaction to your posting was - If you need to ask difference between a UK WRX and an STi then you should probably be driving a metro!!

But, I have a practical suggestion. Drive both on a longish run with a mixture of twisting lanes and and fast straights. You will then KNOW the difference.

keep skinny

Harj,

All i can say is the STis couldn't have been HIGHLY tuned - bearing in mind I kept with you with a std ECU running just over 1 bar when you were running 1.5!

If your gearing was the same as a 22b, it must've had a different box from factory.

Cool

1.3 bar Craig! and you could be right about the box even though it looked std when PS changed the clutch.

Oh Craig you forgot to mention your MONSTER 2.2 BPM Engine youve got in your car?

Not to mention the new STi's 6 speed gearbox and Brembo brake system... fatter tyres, better engine pieces (higher revs, lower wear).

Cheers.

Question

So what's Subaru/Prodrive's official line on the P1 then? Is it 276 bhp on super unleaded or 276 bhp on normal unleaded? In either case wouldn't that make it more powerful than the STI, which is supposed to have 276 bhp on 100 or even 102 ron fuel?

I'd check out the WRX V-ltd models (if you can find one).

I drove a MY98 STI V4 before I bought my MY96 v-ltd WRX. The STI was the better looking car, but the performance of both is so scary there is really little practical difference unless you plan to do loads of track days. The STI seemed quicker, and more manic changing gear every two minutes. The harder ride of the STI is great when you're flying about, but the WRX is a little more compliant on more sensible journeys.

The standard WRX have very dull interiors, and when I found mine which has WRX mechanicals but an STI interior (alacantra seats, Nadi steering wheel etc) I was sold. Add to that the alloy bonnet/boot and rally blue paintwork with obligatory gold wheels I was a very happy camper.

The insurance was pretty good too, and the broker treated it as a standard WRX.

Pity I crashed it :-(

Question

Were the early WRXs a de-tuned STi?

I ask this because my MY93 WRX has the alloy bonnet, and close ratio 'box (revs out in 4th at 100mph & runs at 1000rpm per 20mph in 5th!) and also the bigger turbo, alloy wishbones etc.

But apparently only has 240PS

Is all this WRX vs STi a bit of a black art??
