As my warranty is running out, I thought I'd get a compression test done whilst it was in having the cambelt done...and there's a surprise, compression is down to 7 bar..on cylinder #4...now do I pay to have the engine to stripped for the warranty company to tell me nothing has failed, its just wear and tear, or do I just wait for the engine to fail and then hope the warranty company pays out, or do you think I'd have a chance going to IM and seeing if they would do it as it's a known (if not acknowledged) issue? Would it be possible to drop another piston head with rings etc in to get me by until I can afford a forged rebuild? What are peoples thoughts on this?
I can't afford a rebuild at the moment, which would be the way to go, as I'm just buying a new house. I can't and won't sell the car with a known issue

rock and a hard place Steve.
1. have it stripped to say nothing wrong
2. Try IM and see what they say
3. wait for it to go.. if it will, may not
4. forge it anyway
personally, I'd try IM/Subaru first and see what they have to say, be polite and explain your worry.
As I've said, IF my car gives up.. once out of warranty, I'll chuck money at it and get it sorted... still cheaper than selling it and buying another car.. once fixed it would be a better car
I didn't have my compression test done, when I rang dealer he said its not a 5min job and cost is about £150, so I said I'd leave it. lol

Thanks for the replies...I'll try IM tomorrow, I'll search on here as I remember reading a thread regarding who to email. I don't want to get rid of it and was planning on forging, but hadn't planned on the missus selling my house and buying a new one

You need to keep a very close eye on oil consumption, as if its ringland it takes less than 350 miles to use a sump full of oil in certain cases, then its bigend failure, & IM saying its not been maintained correctly & gives them a get out of jail free card, as in 75% of all 2.5 failures.

I did ask for a compression and leak down test, I just relayed what I was told over the phone. I'm picking it up today so I'll find out more (hopefully). I check the oil on a near daily basis anyway, which is how I noticed it had started to use oil...it hadn't used a drop in almost 30k miles since I got it, now it's used almost 1.5ltrs in 1000 miles. I'll be contacting IM today to see what if anything they can do. Its a year out of the full Subaru warranty but I did take out the extended warranty...which has sorted out the other (cheap) issues I've had...but when I need it the most, its worthless...grrr. Oh well, best get saving for a forged rebuild.
Anyone with any advice on parts that I can start to pick up?...not worried about chasing numbers, just reliability

My extended warranty ran out end of Jan. Subaru warranty rang me a few weeks before asking if I wanted to extend it again for another year at a cost of £608 so I said yes.that was like nearly 400 cheaper than the previous year cost!

I now have surplus to my requirements a pioneer double din satnav, facial panel & steering wheel control adaptor.
The sat nav really is a great piece of kit which transformed the car and includes Bluetooth hands free, Ipod connecter and displays album art, reversing camera input , sd card input, support for extra monitor etc etc
Full details can be found here
http://www.pioneer.eu/eur/products/a...20BT/page.html
Photos availbe on request.
Unit is in good overall condtion, if I was to be at all critical in bright sunlight on the screen when the power is off you can see a very light scratch from a finger nail, when the unit is on you cant see it
thought I would offer it here first before ebay, looking at £325.00
Also have a set of genuine Sti mats in great condtion and only a few months old for 25.00
Both plus postage
Drop me a pm if interested

You must have the oem one which is bigger than double din. The one in the link above is what you need for double din. It's the same size as the jdm one. The jdm one appears to be better quality but I'm happy with my £15 one!

They are is a very good tyre at a lot lower price that Goodyears, etc, the ones we use are the Sessanta's, road noise and grip are both great, so much better than the horrid Dunlops.
