The section can be password protected, and I have also raised this point. However, the password is stored in a cookie, thus once you have entered it once it'll be stored, and I'm not sure what the expiry is on the cookie, but I know from my brief tests that it only seems to be cleared if you log out of the site. Clearing the cache, history and quitting and relaunching your browser does not prompt for password re-entry.

Thus the problem is then down to having to remember to logout once you have finished using SN, lest someone else, for example your kid, comes onto your machine, visits SN and gains access to the Adults Only section as you were logged in and had entered the password.

Based on viewing which is the main forum listing I have found the following:

Logged out = Adults Only section is not visible in forum listing (it would normally be found between the Other Marques and Fight Club forums in the Community category)

Logged in as a normal user = Adults Only section is visible in the forum listing but has a padlock icon and last post column contains "Private" (this is the standard vB description for forums you don't have access to). You CAN click on the Adults only link, and it does open the thread listing display but no threads are actually visible. It reports "There have been no posts in the last 10 days in this forum", again a default message.

Logged in as Blue/Orange/Plus member = Adults Only section is visible in the forum listing and can be accessed and all threads within are available for viewing.

 

You can't use Credit card (Master Card / VISA) as proof of over 18.

Well thats not so bad IMO.

I paid for a subscription when they first came out because a) it wasn't alot of money and b) I'm on here every day so why shouldn't I cough up some green for it.

The fact that there is now an adult section is a plus IMO. I agree that there is a risk that kids could see it but its not exactly rocket sciene to turn off google safe search and see far worse than is even allowed in the adult section.

Give it a week and those that aren't interested won't even notice it.

Can you format the main forum page so that the sections that are only accessible by paying members are grouped together, that way I can minimise that section and forget about them as they're of no interest to me or a great number of long standing members.

 

It really NEEDS to be selectable by the user from their user control panel. I dont particularly want to see hardcore **** topic titles while looking for regular SN material.

Am WFH and have posted in the adult section, however at work I shall now not be surfing SN, far too risky.

 

Very easy to do this from a technical viewpoint, simply create a new "Paid Membership" category (or whatever you want to call it) and then move the paid forums into that Category. You can then min that cat and you won't see it.

You could also change permissions on the cat and/or forum so it only ever appears to those who are able to access it.

 

Depends how you want to go about it. A quick thought would be to create a new adults only usergroup. Then set permissions on the forum so that only this group can view and access it.
At this point no-one (bar admins and mods) would be able to see it. If a user who has Blue/Orange/Plus membership wishes to gain access, they PM admin/mod, asking for access. They check they have the right membership level and then add them to this new usergroup. They will then be able to see and access the section.

This would mean that those who don't care won't see it, and those who do want to see it simply request access, job done.

It does mean someone would have to manually add the users to the group (I don't think there is a way to do this automatically without installing some kind of add-on, but I am having a look at a test vB setup at the moment to see what options are available)
