Where to take an American in London?
Show him the memorial eagle stood opposite the London Eye.
It hails the British dead of two world wars. Note; the eagle looks towards France.
The Yanks believe that they prevailed in world war II, at least, single handedly.

Thanks some great ideas, the duck tour sounds fun and a bit different. Not sure I'd want to get soaked by the ****ty brown thames water on a rib tour though.
So I think
Duck tour
London Eye
Buckingham palace
That's more than enough for one day I would have thought?

Definitely London Dungeon reckon its one of the best things to do in London.
Avoid the planetarium its painfully crap. I found Madamme Tassauds OK but expensive for the lack of entertainment it provides.
Suggest take him to Camden, stables market and some nice pubs there.
Stroll along the embankment, visit Westminster, see Piccadilly circus. If he likes museums and stuff like that maritime museum is excellent and British museum also very good.
Bit hard to know without know whats he's interested in.

Ask him what famous places he wants to see and go to those.
Tate Modern is good and very accessable to those who don't usually like Art. Then, a walk over the wobbly bridge to St Pauls of course.
Bit of people watching in Covent Garden is always fun and a trip around Soho is always a good eye opener and harmless fun as is Hoxton Square and Harvey Nicks 5th floor bar.
London Eye is always good if it's sunny.

How about...
The local fish n chip shop?
Spearmint Rhino?
Local caff for a fry up?
Ride in a black cab in the centre of london at rush hour?
A forward connecting flight to somewhere nice?
A trip on the underground! woop woop!
Share a Cornish Pasty by the River Thames...ahhh how romantic
Go somewhere that you wont get mugged, eg, not London
Buck. Palace to see the old bag?
Millets to buy an Anorak?
Im out of ideas now...
