#1535
As promised ive always said that when the time is right i would just go ahead and put the engine together. Well today was that day and ive assembled the short motor.
So within 48 hours i have a fully built set of heads and a built shortblock. lol
I'll get some pics up when i can, but heres a taster

Okay guys,
Nice to get some time to spend on the short motor yesterday. So here are some snaps from along the way.
Block, crank, rods, pistons were all hot washed and inspected and allowed to cool. (Soak to room temp) Rods were assembled to crank with new ACL Race bearings. Bolts were torqued and checked for stretch. Big end side clearances were measured.
Block was then split and main bearing liners fitted. Also ACL Race series.
Orings were put in place and crank lowered in place.
Block was then sealed using Loctite 5910 and torqued to spec. Crankshaft endfloat was measured and rear main oil seal was fitted.
With the block torqued i gapped all piston rings, Top comp set to .40, Napier set to .48 and oil controls were set to .38.
All rings then fitted, gaps orientated and pistons installed. Turnover torque was measured. Wrist pin access plugs were installed along with the rear breather plate.
I wanted to fit the oilpump too but i seem to be missing an Oring, so that will have to wait.
Now the motor has been bagged and sealed and will be placed on a stand for further build.
Compression heaights willnow be measured and i can order head gaskets formy desired squish and CR.
So nothing too exciting but progress all the same

Yeah has a bit mate. The putting it together is the easy bit and takes no time at all. Its just speciing everything right and making sure you have everything how you want it.
I'll be alot happier once its on a stand and the heads are on. Then i can really start building stuff up.
Got a few bits to get powdercoated along the way too so that may cause alittle hold up but nothing major. Its easy now as its on the homeward run.
Interested to see how its going to feel/develop power as it has an interesting compression ratio. (i'll let you all know what it is once its mapped )
Always enjoy putting the EJ motor together too, makes abreak from the norm of inline and V motors i do day in day out.

Gotta agree, I hope to be posting some similar pics in the next few days but until I can get in there and start reassembling the ancillaries I won't be content
mapping...now that is gonna be scary
intrigued on the compression ratio..hope it works out the way you expect it to, have you got a date in mind or are you going to wait until its closer to finished before booking?

No date yet chap, I'm in no position to book that yet still too many variables. Plus I have to buy other things before I buy an ECU. That will be the last thing I buy.
I think I'm going to get someone else to do the first turn of the key though, lol.
Are you building your motor yourself?

The only part of my build I'm not doing is the long engine...that, along with the mapping is Zak's job, hence his posts around it's build
Perhaps I'll wear one of those heart rate monitors when I do get to turn the key for the first fire...bet the results to that would be entertaining

No adapter required mate.
They do plug & play for my car now so it won't be a problem.
Yeah I'm in no rush, I mean its taken this long, so I want it to be right ya know.
Hopefully I can get my gaskets ordered today so I can ge the heads bolted up next week. My oil pickup and pan is still at the fab shop and will be about a week or so.
Also need to decide what I want colours wise so I can get parts to the powdercoaters etc.
Only other thing that might be a bit of dicking about is the tappet clearances. But won't take much time to sort if any need adjusting.
I'm not expecting any of them to come in as the heads have had new valves, but hey I might get lucky.
Have you purchased a rotated kit yet or is that on the "to do" list?
You going 30R?
I need to raise more funds for this build so might start doing more private builds lol,
Roll up roll up!!!!
Frayz's engine builds, head builds, roof vents and more!!!
Grab em while they're hot!

Okay chaps, tiny update.
I wanted to fit my heads up tonight but i forgot the wrench i wanted to use so couldnt fit them up. I'll wait.
Gaskets arrived,
Aslo my injectors arrived, these are supposed to be very good indeed so lets hope they do the trick.
Decided to get the short block on the stand and to fit the oil pump anyway, so obviously i took pics hahaha
So hopefully make some better progress on my next update.

I've also got a T41 ... getting on a bit now, but still a damn good laptop. I love the Thinkpads, they take years of travel and abuse and still keep going ... just a pity they are so damn expensive new.
