I believe with these cameras the photos are only to show who was driving the car etc and they don't need two or more photos to verify the speed like the do with gatsos, therefore the above is irrelevant.

I know that a loose number plate can cause false readings though...

Sorry to drag up an old thread, but I was wondering what the outcome of this was?

I am guessing he paid the fine got the points and that was that... but an update would be good.

Although there is some good info on this thread there is a lot of rumor and guess work too.

Also worth noting that the safety camera partnership (the ones that operate vans) are NOT Police Officers. They work in a police office but they are civi's and Police officers are not involved in the process at any point. Same for the fixed cameras and motorway ones. The only ones that involve actual Police officers are where an Officer is stood with a "gun" device. In that case they will almost certainly stop you at the time and then discretion can be used potentially.

As has already been stated no speedo under reads.

The measuring devices are calibrated yearly by the manufacturer (in test conditions and a certificate is issued) the daily checks are just confidence checks to make sure it reads distance and alignment correctly. If it does then the speed measuring part of it won't have changed. It's just maths based on the time it takes light to travel back and forth. The confidence checks can be done by a lone officer and just need to be noted down before and after use.

Things like (what if it hit a different bit of bonnet?) are not valid arguements. When an operator stands in the cold aiming a device with one hand where the red aiming dot covers the front bumper area of a car he can't choose which bit of the bumper to aim at. The difference in actual speed based on which part it hits is meaningless. The device is sending out a ridiculously fast pulse of light and takes an average of a high number of "bounces" back before giving a reading. This covers the fact the target area may move and even miss the car slightly while getting it's reading.

The fact the road may be bent is also a useless argument as this would tip the reading in the favor of the driver.

The 10% + 2mph is policy not law. So if it's the forces policy then you should be ok. But don't take it for granted that it will be.

Also other then some roads policing officers most of Policing is not target based. There is no incentive to issue tickets. If anything it would benefit the officer to be lazy and not bother. It generates paperwork and court cases down the line. The admin from most tickets costs more then the money they generate which doesn't go to the police anyway. It goes to the local authority. I know for a fact the majority of officers despise giving tickets and rarely do. There are a few who love it...

There is a lot of myth out there that people continue to believe.

Speed and take it on the chin when you get caught or don't speed and never get caught. If you are genuinely innocent then you will be fine if you fight it in a sensible and logical manor and will be compensated if you stick to your guns.

(on standard wheels and tyres) i pass a lot of those warning signs that flag up your speed and if i was doing 30 it would read as 26 on the sign, likewise 35 would read as 30/31. i assume these signs are as accurate as a gatso or tripod so i guess that would make my speedo out (but thankfully in the right direction)
