Does anyone have an add on that locks the Blackberry when it has been left for say 30 seconds rather than manually locking handset from BB main menu?

My 5 year old nokia used to do this, BB seem to miss some basic functions for some reason. ie. ring and vibrate and same time etc.

I know what you mean about the basic functions but I think the whole idea of a BB is to make it YOURS.... So they load very little on it. Its like buying a brand new PC.... up to you what you put on it and what you want it to do. So for that im grateful, nice to have something not filled with rubbish I will never use lol

Great point, it is nice being able to customize. Although I think it would be nice if Blackberry/RIM, had a dedicated website to upgrades and custom features.

It feels like these add ons have been developed by frustrated BB users as they cant get them. It would be much nicer if your blackberry was designed to be basic(ish) then users encouraged to customize.

For example the different coloured leds, that program is a little buggy (not working on PIN etc), why dont BB develop these as add ons for users?

I reckon in time BB will do that mate, its only the last year or so that BB's have really gone mainstream for the average joe user.
They do have their own approved software on their site, but in a sense its actually good that its open source allowing people to develop their own stuff and distribute it without being prosecuted.

In the meantime they have a massive business following that they need to keep happy with bugless devices, so its just about them finding a happy medium.

 

Right i was already looking at a Bold but after reading this thread i'm deffo getting one. I'm changing over from Orange to O2 because in my new house i get **** all signal, neither does Voda or T-Mobile. Maybe because the walls are 21 inches thick?!!! But for some reason O2 gets full signal everywhere in the house

So, i've been on the O2 website and found it pretty useless with regard to what tariff offers what. Is anybody else on here with O2 and on the Bold / Curve BB and what do you get on your tariff? I'd want the phone mainly for tinterweb, e-mails and to keep tabs on shares etc. I don't make millions of phone calls but send a few texts out (which admittedly will turn into e-mails with this phone) and thats about it.

Any help would be appreciated,

I sometimes wonder what that lad does with his Blackberry since his love for all things Blackberry seems to know no bounds ... probably explains why he knows off the top of his head how to set it to vibrate though

OK first question mate.... so you NEED 3G... the speed is not always as good as it could be.
If you can live with the slightly slower GPRS/EDGE, then get the 8900 Smaller lighter etc....

Secondly, I believe most O2 BB tariffs are around £35 a month, inc unlimited data which will give you all your email, web browsing and BB instant messaging.

Right just a quick pointer... Im sure they will do you a better deal if you call up, but according to the O2 site, the 8900 is free with tariffs £34 and above, but the Bold is not free til something like £45 a month......
Just a simple point to help the decision making process.

That tariff would inc 600 UK minutes and 1000 UK texts each month
And includes BIS data services, unlimited data *see T&C's

It is worth playing with both. I had a look at an 8900 in the shop earlier as I was intrigued. I still prefer my bold. The keypad feels closer to my old 8800 than the 8900. Also I liked its shape and size, (of which I thought was very little difference). dont think 3G is worth so much that it makes a huge difference. It is more personal choice but the bold is definately for me.

I was never a curve lover, and I think that maybe affects my opinion on this model.

Fair play though, some prefer the bigger phone, there are definatly differences on the keypads. I have to say I was the opposite, I didnt like the Bold keypad.

I definatly agree with the 3G comment though (seeing as I have said it all along )
With WiFi at home, and EDGE on the move, the speed is fine.

Snazster, i prefer the look of the bold over the curve but i'll go into my local O2 shop and have a good feel and play with both! 3G isn't a must but admit i always thought it was faster/better, since reading this thread it doesn't seem to be the case!

I've just had a more in depth look on the O2 site and now it's making more sense. I thought i was having to pay per month for the tinterweb emails etc but it's free!!! Not bad for £35 a month and £50 for the phone purchase.

Can't wait to get one

Yup from reading the O2 site, once you choose the tariff they add the BIS onto it for free in most cases, which will take care of all your data.

I thankfully only pay something in the region of £16 a month for mine

gav i got a bold on voda online £35 600mins, unlimited texts + £5 for Blackberry Internet Services (500MB) per month. The phone was free btw. i do believe the O2 charge £7.50 for bolt ons like BIS and WIFI

The autolock add on is great, i'm forever putting in my phone in jacket pocket and forgetting to lock. This feature stops me ringing people randomly

right, stuck OS 4.6 (.247) on last night and everything seems to be ok. no detrimental change in battery life and i am still getting a cracking 3G signal. so all good. 16 GB memory card on order as i got paid to day. music and apps galore now

 

Aaah the storm and 8900 both have dedicated lock keys... buggers lol
But autolock is definatly handy for those moments of stupidity. Good simple app.

viiago for one, would like the coloury led for messages and emails and sms but heard it's a bit buggy atm. some really nice apps out there but they tend to crippled trails or you have to buy them. don't like buying stuff if i can't have a fiddle with her/it first

The bbalerts is good IMO not had any problems with it, and depending on the volume of messages, emails etc you get, it can come in handy and stop you constantly checking to see if THE email has come in yet.

I wanna stick a few more worth while ones on soon, but im being picky now

Some good themes out there, and good software, but sadly some of it costs money !!

 

anyone know how the moblie companys gimp their BB's? What I'm getting at is I've got the new 8900 curve from T-mobile but to have the BB's push mail/messages acitve I have to pay another £5 a month, which I don't want to do really. If get it unlocked and upgrade the firmware will this let me connect to a BB server? (I have a freind that will allow me to connect to his server)

I thought the extra £5 a month was for the pushing email service, but I've checked and I can't even connect a POP3 hotmail account..

 

PUSH is not the same as POP3 mate, so you would not get the same service. You can always use the browser to log into a webmail server, but its not the same as having PUSH.

 

Ok cheers pal.. I can't even seem to use MSN messenger, as once I've installed it all and try it I get a "This service isn't active on this device" message.

Can I get round this my unlocking/upgrading the firmware, or do I have to pay T-mobile to get the BB services (which includes messenger)? just trying to save the extra cost, if I can't get round it I suppose I'll just pay the extra..

Sorry I'm not sure how the BB services and T-mobile all link together?? I have a BB server I can use but T-mobile are blocking me, just wanted to know if I can get round this with an unlock etc...
