Edited to say...I will take this rip curl.....corner.

KingOT your dead right.

Didnt bother me though, most of the girls didnt surf either, which was good for me/us as it wouldnt raise any awkward questions to blow my cover. They were good high altitute skiers though...all of them.

Most were beach/pool attendants, or if they couldnt swim... bar staff.

They were usually 17-20 year old Australian girls working during their winter period, then they would fly back and work their summer.

We would hunt during the day mainly bobbing around in the sea as you described but basically just to get wet, and playing football on the beach...Yes June/July always seemed to be sunny in those days, yet when we returned for the 'Run To The Sun' it was always raining.

What a complete **** of a drive it was too, the stint between Birmingham and exeter on the M5 was hell, Bristol was about half way but it never seemed to arrive...5-6 hours staring at my temp gauge waiting for it to pop its cap.

These were days before everyone had mobile phones, unless you had a Rabbit phone which only worked when you where stood next to a Rabbit sign..so if your car fell behind and took the knock and wasnt noticed by the rest, you where on your own.......

I was one of those people parked at Fistral with the wetsuit across the bonnet of my bug, surfboard out the roof and my music on.

I would display 30-40 parking tickets covering the rear quarter window from upto date ones to two year old sunburnt yellow tinged ones...this was done to annoy the parking attendants.

It just said display the ticket which I did sometimes, it didnt say display all the old ones and make the attendant stand at my Bug checking for 15 mins...

I think the waves were alot bigger than that. And in some cases just as big as your pictures

But if its making you happy then carry on trying to belittle people with their "failed footballers" comments etc..

It takes two years of being in the water at least a few times a week to be any good at surfing. It takes a year of constantly being in just to catch a "green" (unbroken) wave properly. So unless you have some sort of unique and extreme talent, then I'm afraid you are a beginner. If you could get out in shoulder to head high waves, I'd be utterly amazed (and impressed). Nowt wrong with being a beginner. A lot wrong with being a beginner that bigs himself up - which happens a lot.

Mind you, you did choose very good spots to learn - CR is particular gets stupidly good. And is full of failed footballers too.

You said you went out in waves the same size as in my pic - that takes a certain amount of know how.
Hey, I have played golf a few times but would never say "I can play golf" Anyone can **** a ball with a club, anyone can splash around in the sea on a surfboard.

Forgive me if Im wrong, but surfing is standing and balancing on a board whilst riding a wave. I have done this numerous times and can therefore surf Might be consistent at it, might fall over numerous times but I have been successful at it too. I had 3 months living on the coast in Central America and there wasnt much else to do by the coast in the mornings and early evenings

LOL

First rule of Surf Club is that if you can, then you don't need to tell everyone about it...

Having said that, FWIW, I have surfed since the age of 7 or 8 (which sadly makes almost 40 years of experience) and I have met some surfers along the way who were surfing waves as big as the OP within weeks. Although some people take a long time, or never "get it", it's generally not as hard as he says.

The pic was actually "ehanced" by the bloke that took it after criticism of it being a bit dark. I think he also did a bit of comedy butt "enhancement" too:

360 Photography cornwall surfing photos for surfers of all abilities

Well sorry fat boy but having been surfing for almost 20 years, having surfed in comps, lifeguarded on surf beaches, judged surf comps, etc, etc I have yet to see anyone, however naturally talented, get any good with less than two years very constant water time under their belts. And unless you live near a surf break, that ain't going to happen. Yes you get hundreds wobbling around on massive boards but that's not proper surfing.

Unless you'd like to show us some pics of yourself having only surfed for a week and prove me wrong?

Funny how so many leap in to have their say (surfing is for poofs, surfing is easy, etc, etc) without actually adding any pics, personal experience or anything. Armchairs warriors of the world unite on SN!

to me the hardest part in surfing is getting "out the back" still attached to the surfboard

makes getting back look easy;-)

Hodgy - that's Teahupoo in Tahiti and it's a MAD wave!
The thing is it's a reef - there waves pound the shore in one spot then it'll be almost flat next to it - no one, even the best surfer ever could duckdive that wave. In fact it has killed several surfers - they all paddle out on a channel.

The UK is mostly beachbreaks with little or no channels so the paddle out really is a hard slog - but the waves break more gently and won't kill you - handy!

Mattee

yes -- when I saw it a couple of years ago I thought it was a photoshop job

yep -- alot of the "tough" breaks have channels, but i'm always amused when I try and get out in a UK type beach break, how fvcking tricky it is (much easier with a sail)

have you ever surfed in Tiree?

Not surfed Tiree. Llangennith in Wales is known for it's awful paddle (was at Swansea Uni for 3 years so surfed it a lot) and Polzeath is pretty bad - where I grew up. You sort of get used to the slog and "zone out" when paddling.

Very frustrating at first though - took me a good two years to properly suss out duckdiving too.

This is the gayest gay thread ever. If this thread were a song it would be a YMCA cover sung by George Michael and Elton John while they were giving head in a public toilet.

The Reef girls - they really are splendid!

Girls that surf really well are often a bit scary. But the "surf chicks" are lovely

Did an event in London when I repped for Rip Curl - some Reef girls were there. It brightened up my entire decade

This bloke is one of our best surfers and a model. He's rather a hit with the girls

I'd be bitter if I lived in Sheffield too.

Been there several times - if that was where I had to entertain myself and work, I'd hate anyone that lives by the sea.

City of Hills and River - thrilling.
