He made a bit of a ****-up of the swearing in, and his speech was weak IMO! He came across as being quite nervous and didn't exactly sound like a strong leader!

I saw the complete opposite to be honest.

DYK, from memory america dont recognise a description as "mixed race".

There's irony for ya, the most senior polititian in England (yes, yes, I know its the same for the rest of GB but run with me on this) couldn't be First Minister in the country in which his own constituency sits.

Its what we do with ******* - deport them to England

Incorrect, since the 2000 census you have been allowed to identify yourself as 'multiracial'

Obama is listed as Multiracial.

Thumbs up

I don't think he would have been elected if he was "pure" black in the Jesse Jackson, Martin Luther image. That would have been too much for the white middle class.

But mixed race people like Colin Powell have paved the way for mixed race folk in power and politics to be accepted.

I think he is a superb guy and pretty damn smart. I wish him all the luck in the world, and he's going to need it.

But I do wonder about the wisdom of appointing Hilary? Would you trust her to do what she is told?

Heard the speech and was impressed. Good luck old son and keep behind that glass

Can someone please explain to me the continual need to describe someones colour ?In these P.C. controlled world we are told that colour is not important, as ML King said judge a man by his deeds not his colour, so all the media coverage has surely made the fact that he is black as a very important issue, Where as if we lived in the PC world that we are told we should have and colour is not important why do the media keep on about his colour ?

Paul.
1st in the West, as far as I remember.

Sorry Green, you're right

Jack, well I never, I knew it was originally their way, was not aware it had changed. But that said, just because a new word is added, its gonna take a long time to get using it.

Not so sure actually. Since 'white' is not a true colour, being called 'coloured' could be seen as a racist term spoken from a 'white' person. I heard this somewhere not that long ago. Still weird if you ask me. 'African - ...' (insert country here) or 'mixed race' is probably the only way to specify a person's skin colour in a politically correct term. Nevertheless, there are 'black' people that are more 'white' than white people, and 'white' people that are more 'black' than 'black people. To me, it doesn't really matter because I am colourblind and excused.

The average black person in the US is 20% white....so if Obama wants to call himself black, then so be it.

40 years ago he wouldn't be able to visit/use white seating, drinking fountains, etc...so I suppose that qualifies him as black in a historical sense.

The answer to your original question is no.

Robert Mugabe was a black president so Barack Obama is not the 1st black president.

It drives me mad the way people are referred to and pigeon holed by the colour of their skin. Who GAF what colour our skin is? We're all human. MLK was so right when he made that famous quote above.

Wink

Actually, White is a mixture of all the colours of the spectrum.
Black is the absence of ANY colours at all.

So White is more all inclusive than any other colour, coincidence?
I think not

u mean Obama is a darkie? i thought he was just a well tanned man

what next a **** Pope?

There is one "thing" that cares what colour Obama is and it will make sure that we are will all start caring about his colour too. Its called the Media. Seeing SkyNews reports on it today just convinced me that in a few months there is gonna be alot of bitterly annoyed white Americans.

To America, it is a big deal to have a president from black heritage/descend. One only needs to look at the black American histrory to understand that. Thats is why, Obama is strongly highlighted by the media as not just a new president, but the very first black president.

I don't mind "coloured" term either. Its not supposed to be "politically correct", though.

I've never seen so many black/coloured/african looking reporters as I've seen over the last few days reporting from the States.

I know its a big thing for America given their history for everyone to harp on about colour.

To me it means stuff all.I just see and hear a charismatic man(slightly disappointed with this speech though)

I agree. They have their eqaulity a rightly too! Now can we all stop harping on about it FFS. I also think there is going to be some pissed off white Americans in a few months time when the media are still banging on about black this black that.

Got to disagree with you Pete.

THe swearing in was partly the fault of the judge who got the words muddled. 50/50 on that one, not that it matters a damn.

As for the speech. Brilliant, absolutley brilliant. A massive call to the US populace that things are going to get worse, but get off your backsides and we can make it better. Those words should echo round the developed world IMHO.

We sat in silence for the entire thing, wife and I got choked up a couple of times, and my 9 year old said nothing until he finished then said "that man speaks really well, I ddin't understand a lot of it, but he's good to watch "

By the time he'd finished, I'd have followed him anywhere!

He is not the first non american president, there used to be a Greek bloke as president but he resigned or was impeached but that was many many moons ago.
