The new Civic is totally different and very much a marmite car.
I've not tried the current Type-R yet, but have driven a few ordinary ones and I don't care if it does 500mph and 500mpg, I would still not buy one.
As an everyday car, I could not live with the crashy ride, the mess of a dashboard and the zero rear visibility.

having had a head to head albeit in a fiat coupe turbo against a ctr i was amazed that it kept me honest and in fact i had to back off in the bends it was a 2001 version and i have heard that they handle better than fiat coupes which in this experience would agree with.. my wrx ppp is a similar pace to the fiat coupe as i had both models at the same time so an easy comparison, you could easily find hundreds of reasons for/against and both cars are very credible too but for me i always prefer the turbo'd cars more which is why i havent had a ctr or rx8 or similar.. sure you can turbo a ctr but its cheaper to add power to a turbo car so buying one to tune as std is a better bet every time too.. reliability then is another matter!!
hope you choose a good one and i am sure you will be happy with both too.good luck

i've got an ep3 type r at the minute and love it to bits! it's useless in this wet weather as it will happily spin it's wheels at the slightest puddle let alone a frosty road, it has no torque to it which i do miss but in the summer it's brilliant and the look on some wrx owners faces when your still on the bumper is priceless.

Having owned 1 CTR, a Bug WRX and a Bug STI I can safely say the CTR is indeed a fast car.
I have never had an issue in the CTR keeping up with classic WRX's, Bugs/Blob WRX's and non PPP'd STI cars.
I know they are quick as when i bought the Bug STI I struggled to lose one of my tail on a straight bit of road. Now the STI is tuned - not a problem.
Reliability - well the honda was spot on apart from phantom light bulbs that used to blow
Servicing - extremely cheap, never more than £250 and now with the honda hapiness deals parts are even cheaper on cars over 3 years old.
I love the subaru to bits hence i sold the CTR (with a full buddyclub spec iv exhaust ) and went to another bug which was an STI this time and worked on it.

Just add my input, I had a Jap import Newage WRX V-Ltd so power is up on the UK version and the Civic struggled to keep up when we were both out driving, on a straight though i found that although i was in front there wasnt a huge amount in it.
That said i have driven both and i much prefer the torque of the turbo, makes it a much easier car to live with as the civic before vtec i found quite dull, tuning the impreza is easier and cheaper and you'll get more out of it.
Civic does sound nice though with a filter on

Not quite what I've heard. I read somewhere that the high revving VTECs (like the Type-R) use a fair bit of oil and if not checked regularly, could result in new engine time. So much so, that dealers were making a point of mentioning this on vehicle handovers.
Having said that, I've also been told that the biggest killer of Subaru engines is lack of oil and Honda are still probably the most reliable cars out there.

My last car was an 03plate Civic TypeR, my sister then got the new Civic TypeR which I have driven (a much more "mature" car compared to the outgoing one) and I now own a Subaru Impreza WRX(blobeye).
To cut a long story short, overall, I prefer my WRX.
Would suggest going for a long test drive in all 3. They are very different to drive in many ways and I'm sure you will enjoy all, but for different reasons - all comes down to personal choice and what you see as important from what you want/need from the car.
My wife for example didn't enjoy driving my CTR as she kept wheel spinning it in 1st gear in the wet, but she enjoys driving my WRX and feels reassured by the 4WD.

My previous Car was an imported Honda Integra Type T that I had modded quite a bit, I would still have it to this day if
A) Some retard didn't write it off.
B) I didn't have a 7 week old baby needing 4 doors and boot space.
The UK Civic Type R is pants, where as the JAp spec Type R is a much better machine, very quick and reliable but blends in with the crowd.
My Integra would have pi**sed all over the UK Civic - lighter, stronger chassis and LSD.
My 02 Bug Sti PPP is great fun to drive but I would still rather my Teg as it was raw, miles better handling and used to get 300 miles from a tank as opposed to the 200 I get from my Bug.

Sure we all see things differently, but my thoughts
Own a new shape type R, love it, handles well, but very hard ride, rear visibliity bad, high driving position, but fun to drive Vtec sounds superb think performance wise very similar to a standard new age WRX, but not PPP
Going to get slated here prefer it to drive to the wifes 08STI, don't get me wrong hers is the faster car, but the type R is more fun.
Then I jump into the P1, game over, classics still rule
Depends what you want, I needed a big boot, 30 MPG on motorways due to work milage, possible to seat 4 if needed, type R cheaper to run than WRX in my opinion.
But then depends what you want to do with it

This is very much a personal choice mate.
No amount of advice will really help u,
As said above by a few people just get out there and get some good test drives in the cars, But one thing i would say if u do like what the civic has to offer go have a look at at dc5 its a better package..
My first fast car was a (53 plate revised spec) type r spoon exhaust mugen induction i loved it, but in a very different way to How i liked my next two cars a uk 05 sti and my 06 spec C.

Cheers guys for your input.
I just wanted my mind putting at rest!!
I have always liked turbo power. After all i have had in the past a Scooby Classic, GTO Twin Turbo Tuned to 380bhp and i have just sold a absolute mint Supra TT to a guy in Germany.
now i am just looking for a sensible every day car to use. thats why i was thinking of something like a 2005 WRX. I know they are not as quick as the STI but for the money they seem a bargain!!
I might go for a PPP version just for a little extra power!!!
Anybody got a WRX PPP? Does it make a big difference?

Some interesting thoughts on here, get the impression many write the Type R off before trying it. I have recently gone from a Classic to the Type R and I'm very impressed.
Well made, reliable, handling and much much faster than expected, no problem keeping up, should say sitting side by side, with an STI hawk (360) and WRX bug (350), both from 30 to silly speed.
I miss my Subaru but the Civic I find is easier to live with on a daily basis, and dare I say it....
More fun?

Well this is an old thread revival
Sorry I lolled at this, the honda wouldnt have kept up with either if they were trying, as a little example this happened to someone i know "cough, cough".
Guy pulls up at some lights on a duel carridgeway in his 316bhp subaru STI new age, sitting there minding his business, next to him pulls up a honda civic type R with a young lad and his girlfriend, road is about 3/4 of a mile to a big roundabout.
Honda is revving slightly, guy in subaru is just sitting there, lights change and civic flies off, guy in subaru starts off nicely in 1st, goes to 2nd and then floors it, passes civic with ease (who was trying quite hard), leaves it by a few hundred meters behind.
Roundabout goes onto a motorway, subaru driver bimbles down this as he isnt in any rush, honda driver tries racing again because he must have fluffed a gear or something, subaru driver floors it just to demonstrate that the honda isnt quick and leaves the honda (again), then lets honda pass later and lols at the honda driver (being told off by his g/f )
No, against a 300+bhp scoob a honda civic type r isnt quick.
Tony

i came from a civic type r to my wrx which was 265bhp when i 1st got it and now its 354bhp...................in either state of tune its alot quicker than a civic type r.
the type r is a brilliant car and gives the feeling of being faster due to the screaming engine but it lacks alot of torque
the 0-60 on the civic is about 6.5 seconds
the 0-60 on a 354bhp impreza is probably around 4 seconds and maybe 5 seconds when it had 265bhp
civic type r's may worry astra vxr's,focus st's,golf gti's etc but a 300+bhp impreza.....................not fecking chance of worrying it

People always write off the Ctr! yes ok a standard ep3 isnt very quick! but the k20 motor does infact have a lot of potential it takes very well to bolt on mods!
The torque will never be high whilst the motor is still n/a but as long as your in the right gear because the car isnt that heavy you dont notive that it doesnt have much torque! I spent about £2500 on modifying mine and managed to get 247bhp, stripped out the car and it weighted around 1100kg and had no problems creeping away from a Sti ppp from a 2nd gear roll! Obviously it's a different story if its off the line or a wet day!

£2500 for 47bhp is very expensive though, did you get kpro?

I have both and i must admit my classic would run rings round it but mine is modded and the type r has a CAI and that's it
They are two different cars and it's hard to compare tbh
But I have seen a fair few newage WRXs off, IMO the type r doesn't lack on TOURQE and is a hoot to drive, I enjoy the life above 6k haha
Depends what you want from the car?
Type r is good MPG and a very fun car to drive
Scoob is not as good, faster and more grip
Here is ours

I had a rx8 231 which is very similar to the type r in straight line speed but my Wrx feels much faster. I know mine is not standard at 280 bhp but I think even a standard Wrx would feel if not be quicker than a civic also a de cat and remap would see a good power gain on the Wrx, not sure you would see much from the civic with them mods. You do get a false sence of speed in a turbo car as the pull when the turbo comes on is quite hard but the rx8 and civic is much more progressive although you do get the vtec pull over 5700 rpm.
One thing I do no about the rx8 is, they don't have much power(even the 231 only produce about 190 bhp not the claimed 231), but put into the bends on track and 350+ bhp scoobys can't keep up, in the dry that is.but having said all that I love the Wrx, I don't go on track so I like the straight line speed.

Yeah Kpro was the main thing that bumped the price up was about £1100 including mapp! Yes 50bhp isn't a lot over standard compared to most turbo fwd cars let's just say focus st for example which will see probably 50bhp over standard from just a map but because of the difference in weight between the two cars (around 200kg) 50bhp will go a lot further in terms of bhp/ton on the much lighter civic!
