I've not got why Weatherspoons gets such a bashing on this site. I've been to a few of them over the years, and to be honest they have normally been one of the best places in town.
The one in Metro Centre is not that great, as its a bit dark and dingy, and had ran out of beer on my trip to it (not a great combo ). That one aside the others have been fine.
I have always admired their smoke free areas, and the fact that they don't blast loud music at you. It allows you to chat to your mates while enjoying quite a good selection of beers. Granted the cheap food is not that good, but if you pay a little more and get something else off the menu then its OK (not great).
Our local one is very nicely decorated, full of leather chairs, free wifi, good staff, free of trouble. Never seen a fight in there, while the pubs nearby seem to have an army full of coppers descending on them on a regular basis

It all depends on the area it is in.
The ones where I work are open at 10am and full of old drunks all day, with plenty of trouble and loads of bag thefts and the odd stabbing
The one near where I live is very nice and clean.

In my local area there are 3 pubs in a row.
The first is a Castle Rock Brewery outlet which specialises in cask ales from all over the UK and continental lagers. The place charges slightly more for lagers than 'spoons (e.g. Carling £2.50), but is cheaper for locally produced cask and about equal for nationally produced casks, even though they have less buying power. The property is furnished with wooden furniture throughout, attracts people who want good quality drink and food and the only person who ever started misbehaving was instantly barred.
The second is a concept outlet for Greene King. The place has a mix of a leather/wooden seating, puts on live music and hosts quizzes etc and is more of a community venue. The do have a large buying power as do 'spoons, and for comparison charge £2.00 for Carling (even though other nearby Greene King outlets are charging £2.60). There has not been any trouble and attracts people who enjoy a community feel.
The third - 'spoons - which for comparison, is charging £2.25 for Carling, attracts the idiots. There is a Police presence in the outlet at least once per day. The police have even started holding their meetings in the place. The place, attracts the people who just want to get steaming as they think it's the cheaper venue. Most of them have not realised that the pub next door is actually cheaper, and those who have, just do not fit in. Anyone in a tracksuit would stand out in either of the other two venues.
Sadly, this is a case of 'spoons being a victim of their own success and only attracting more problems to themselves.

I'm interested to see if it comes into effect in every Wetherspoons house as here in Nottingham, there is an agreement between all pubs that no-one will sell for under £1.50 a pint, to combat binge drinking.
If 'spoons break that agreement, then all the others will follow suit...
