I didn't for one moment accuse you of insulting Mattee or anybody else, you were having banter and I joined in by giving my point of view. It just happens that my point of view is quite similar to Mattees and I put it across.

I wasn't 'defending' Mattee in some kind of playground styleee, you know that as well but have decided to try and milk that angle. Fair play to you though as its quite quick witted

Persimmon NE have 250 houses that they are going to build thru out this year. That figure could rise if they have more sales but at the moment those sales are definate. Considering its only the north east area its not a bad amount of work to have on the go. I definately think its more than last year or it may just seem like it

 

My father in laws company is a contractor that worked exclusively for Persimmon homes.

He was layed off in November..He has worked for them for years too..

 

Persimmon have got rid of hundreds of contractors and staff. I can't see where they will get the workforce for 250 houses but time will tell. The only contractors left are the ones working for cut prices.

250 houses is nothing for a firm like Persimmon!

My Dad has managed a bit of a lucky one. He designs and does up period houses for people in super high quality style.

After 6 weeks of very little work, he's just got the nod (i.e. Dad got him planning permission and a very good architect) on a two year Grand Designs style mega new build project (the land alone was £800k) for an ex MD of a Lehman Bros division, now Nomura (i.e. money no problem). He wants the best of the best and it should hopefully see Dad through the worst of this slump. Good timing is rather an understatement.

Meanwhile work is piling in so fast here that I think I might need to take on some more freelancers. I'm sure it won't last!

Mattee, I'm no expert in these matters but if you are holding a large amount of cash you may want to spread it around different currencies. The £ may well continue to lose value, in which case you are losing purchasing power everyday.

John, do gold/oil etfs track the commodity near 100% and 100% backed by physical supply?

I thought I read somewhere that a commodity ETF lost loads of value (though the commodity stayed flat) because the company that insured it was on the verge of going bust (could hhave been AIG or similar)

What I'm trying to ask are there any other factors OTHER than the price of the commodity that can effect the price of a commodity ETF?

FIL has just opened a dollar account and transferred a load of cash - to try and stave off our crashing pound.

Hesitant to do the same but considering it.

 

The gold one I am using is 100% physical backed. Oil probably not, but I don't have a huge amount in that one.

AIG underwrote the ETFS silver that we had before. It was frozen for about a week, but there were no losses.

In GBP terms, I should have kept the ETFS gold I had before. I'm starting to buy again now at a higher level than where I sold it, but I struggle to find anything else I trust. I'm deeply unhappy about all the major currencies except perhaps the Yen, but that has gained so much I don't want to put more in as some feel that a strong Yen will destroy Japanese exports and force a correction.

I would love to get a nice property bought and mop up all my savings to do so, perhaps even add a modest fixed rate mortgage if a good deal was available, if I was in the US I probably would do well to move out of a strong dollar into property now. Too early for England, and certainly too early for Scotland which lags even more.

Presently, savers are paying the price for the nation's debt more than the indebted, some of whom are doing really well on tracker mortgages.

Someone just told me an agent wants £3k to sell their £90k house or £4k for joint agency.

Plus they need £400 for a HIP pack.

 

If an Agent can sell your house, then maybe they are worth that?

 

They only completed 190 house last year so if they are doing 250 completed houses this year its a huge improvement

 

Rents are now falling drastically - sellers will need to sell and not rent.

Can only drive prices down once more.
