Allow me to introduce myself
Hello there, I thought i'd introduce myself as I am the new owner of this Carbon Classic...
Bit of history about me, I was an ESC member on here a few years back and I owned a 330bhp Bugeye WRX (which is still kicking about) I then moved on to the below RX7.
This was built from the ground up from a pretty much standard twin turbo set up. My goal was to have something a little unique, with good SAFE power without compromising day to day driveability. It made a healthy 421rwhp at 0.9 bar and turned a few heads
Whilst the work was being carried out I decided I needed a run about, but me being me I purchased a tidy R33 GTST with nothing more than an air filter, full decat exhaust and a drift diff which I eventually gave to my dad who is driving it around still to this day...
I then decided to buy a house so I sold the Rex for a tidy sum and stepped back from Jap car ownership for a while (well...whilst still burning around in the Skyline on the odd occasion) always knowing i'd be back with a vengance...

So here I am...
I was originally after a Hawkeye Spec c...however when this came up, I knew instantly that I could really do something quite special with this as it's pretty unique already. Twin that with the fact I have seen ABW's work through previous experience and know it to be second to none, it was a bit of a no brainer!
I bought this with the general idea of keeping the Carbon Fiber theme whilst turning it into a decent powered, USEABLE road car. I don't mean as an everyday car, but something that wouldn't break my back and rattle my teeth everytime I did decide to take it for a spin. Hats off to you guys doing the TA runs and the like, but i've had my fun and got fed up worrying over every little rattle. Saying that you never know
So I got it home, stripped the stickers and gave it a good wash and wax. I find this to be a good starting point as you get to know every scratch and chip straight off the bat. There were a few things that I hadn't noticed before I got it home, but nothing that can't be fixed.
Also on the way home I had some revving issues. Again i'm not too fussed as I really only bought this for the shell, however after a quick call to MoleyWRX (thanks again mate) along with some further investigating, it was deduced that it's probably down to the MAF being on it's way out, plus since the FMIC was installed it hadn't had a remap...so it's booked in at the end of the month to have the ECUtec ripped out and a Simtec put in then at least I can run it..... I do have plans for the engine (daz you lege! ) but as it's been a while since i've had something to mess around with and I don't like to rush anything, i'm concerning myself with the cosmetic side for the summer. Once summers out the way it'll then be the start of the engine/gearbox transformation...
What I have done/has been done so far:
Thanks to Cornelius the Denso spark plugs came straight out and a set of Platinum NGK's put in their place. Then where the hole was from the stripped out head unit, he fitted a nice little JVC for me
Next it was down to Creative Car audio to have a set of uprated front speakers put in.
I purchased a B&M short shifter as no matter what I own, I love a short throw so that was a quick 15 minute job done.
There was no spare wheel but thanks to jasongtr that was a quick source.
Then the real fun started, finally time to get my hands dirty! ...the orders were put out so I decided to strip the car ready for their arrival...
I stripped out the attempted prior sound system which consisted of a couple of Vibe speakers powered by a Kenwood amp (in the for sale section) hence why I had the fronts installed previously. Hey, I need something to listen to!
I noticed one of the fogs were cracked:
so I ordered a set of crystals as a tempory solution as i'm having something else fabricated
I found a full Cusco rollcage for a decent price so I snapped it up:
A bit of wear on it and not sure if i'm going to use it as of yet but I may just install the rear half because noone will be able to sit in the back anyway..my only concern is that with the weight saved, is it worth adding to it with something that's thought of as mainly for show? anyway I'm rubbing that down and respraying in white to match the wheels...
And now....i've come to a standstill. Unfortunately the deliveries on the parts have been put back a few days (one of which a reputable company took payment, promised me next day delivery and i'm told today that it's out of stock...another 3 weeks of waiting! )
Anyway, i'll be keeping this thread alive with my progress...should have updates weekly at the very least....
BTW Daren, I haven't forgotton to come down to you mate...the battery is completely fked so i've ordered myself a new one and waiting for it to turn up!

Well the car was put on hold for a few weeks due to a family bereavement but at least all the parts turned up so over the past few days i've been busy.
The car was running like a complete dog, so I bit the bullet and decided to get a Simtek fitted. After some hunting around and advice from a few people, I decided to contact JGM and booked in with Simon down at Surrey Rolling road. What a fantastic bloke...I couldn't have asked for more! Simon even organised for Stu to do an oil change for me before the map..(which i'm glad he did as the oil that came out was like tar)
So my window arrived and Simon along with Charlie listened to exactly what I wanted and mapped away. At this stage i'm not interested in figures, I wanted a solid idle with all the reving issues it had fixed, low range to mid range torque with the boost tailing off towards the top end plus all the pops and bangs dialed out. Simon did exactly that and whilst i'm not interested in figures, it made a healthy 266bhp with 270lbft. Nothing too exciting but as you know, my aim is to enjoy it through summer and then spend winter working on the mechanical side.
This is now the first time since purchase i've been able to drive it and i'm really chuffed...I now remember what Subaru ownership feels like!
So back to the further modifications/deliveries...I've been talking to a member on here called Scooby Wez. Now if you haven't read anything about this guy you've missed out because Wez is one of these guys that when someone says, "You can't do that" he goes..."Oh yeah? well look at this then"
It's a real joy that there are still some genuine enthusiasts around like Wez. He organised the parts I needed, drove all the way from Hastings on Tuesday morning with his son, removed the parts he was tweaking, drove back home, spent hours last night finishing his tweaking and then drove all the way back to fit them this morning! Top, top bloke and he is definately one to watch
What did he do? Can you see anything different on my UK 2000? (apologies for quality of pics...something up with my camera and it's driving me nuts)
Next, onto the big boxs i've had delivered! Firstly we have the carbon fiber parcel shelf, bulkhead and rear seat trim...
Next a special delivery from Roger Clarke. I must say, i'm very impressed with the level of quality and service you get from them...
First off, it was the placing of all the carbon fiber inside to get a rough idea of how it will fit/look.
To get this far, I had to drill out the tack welds for the rear seat hooks. By doing this it makes them easier to remove plus if I ever wanted to return the car to standard, I could always bolt them back on:
Then there was also ths issue of ammending the rear seat side trims so the cf rear seat trim could fit flat:
These are going to need some further modifying as the cf rear seat trim will also need to have its edges trimmed down, but I'm hoping to get on top of this at the weekend.

It was good to meet you Steve the cars going to be a real beast by the time you are finished I think the round trip of 240 mile over the 2 days was worth it and i still think the door panel option we talked about would look good .Just thinking on what to play with next

The only problem I have with this is i'm not sure the parcel shelf is the correct one. It will fit however the two seperate cf rear strut wells will not fit without being cut into pieces. Let me explain:
The molded cf strut wells have straight curves
But the wells themselves are not straight:
So the cf wells will not fit. I could just cut the top out and leave the wells themselves bare but I would have thought they should fit. So i've gone back to the manufacturers and am awaiting confirmation..however regardless of that small hiccup, I think you can see what i'm trying to achieve.
Next, I had seen a few posts about this Neffy Wrap stuff. It wasn't pricey so I thought i'd ship some in and have a go. The other reason for this was when removing the rear seatbelts, I had a slightly heavy handed moment and kinda..er...snapped one of the seatbelt feed trims. So I thought i'd test out this Neffy stuff on them..quite happy with the result:
So then I got carried away and tried the standard middle cubby hole:
Not so impressed...but this will go when I eventually fit some defi's. I've decided to have a break from neffy now
Then today I decided to fit the wingmirrors. Have to say again, really impressed with Roger Clarke and can see why the mirrors cost what they do, impressive bits of kit.
Here they are fitted:
Impressed with the overall fit and think they give it a much better presence.
With any luck, i'll be able to fit the rear sections in over the weekend ready for more updates soon...
Cheers

if it was me i would get all the bits that are green painted black like engine bay and where your doors are as it looks half done, can't see why the other owner never had it done
looking good tho apart from the green and will look farward to seeing you make it even better
keep up the good work

It is proper carbon fibre - the real deal, no fake carbon fibre vinyl wrap at all on the bodywork.
I have personally worked on the car, Steve (Captain Carbon is a good friend)
The craftsmanship from ABW is simply breathtaking and the pictures don't do the car any justice
