After 3 years, the 911 will probably be worth not much less than you paid, whereas the Evo will be looking at half that. Comparisons like these are very personal but for me, only an M3 comes close to a 911. An FQ400 might be a bit quicker (I doubt it frankly) but on absolutely every other count it scores zero, nil, blank.

Richard.
Be good to see the stats side by side, anybody know of any comparisons? how much is an M3 now?

Chav is a stereotype isn't it? it actually stands for council something. I know the sort of people you're on about though, think that's just a lack of style or taste...maybe it genetic ...makes the rest of us look good though...on the plus side

Evos are wonderful, no question, but when it comes to actual ownership most people back away. To me, an Evo just shows what an amazing supercar-killer you get get with 2litres, which is an interesting technical point, but not one I want to prove with my own money. There is a reason why true supercars are not 2litre turbos!

Richard.
The R32 actually got a surprising number of nice comments.
Best was a group of kids aged about 12 shouting "Cooorrr, nice car mate!" in Oxford. They were obviously discerning kids!

Know what you mean about the Evo. And yes, a 997 still gets my overall vote. But I also love the Cayman S.

The car I felt a right t1t driving was a red F355 Berlinetta.
I have never been such an object of hate - mind you this was in Cornwall...

Cayman. Gorgeous looking thing and, by all accounts, even better to drive than a 911 with the engine in the middle. But I can't stop thinking hairdresser. Is it just me?

Hoppy - I just think "993" when I see a Cayman. Reckon it escapes the hairdresser tag.

Nat - A mate recently bought a 348 - engine has to be removed at each major service!

Give me a decent car over some geek watch any day wtf can you do with a more expensive watch or do you think your 007

Do you remember the FQ400 vs Murcielago test on Top Gear a few years back? Clarkson in the Evo kept up with a BTCC driver in the Lambo. Then they did some stupid test where a supermini out accelerated the evo from 30mph in 5th gear or something. One of the most pointless tests ever imho.

Also £40K+ for an Evo is getting towards GTR money and I know which Id prefer from new.

Nah they look mint esp side profile. Shame they havent come down that much in price tho. Just checked Porsche website and cheapest listed S in GB is £28k for a 03/06 model so 2.5yrs old, 20k miles and in a tacky red colour

Been Porsche hunting today and Caymans almost make the 911 look ugly at the back. Sooo nice Caymans are still quite new and so there aren't that many about. S Tiptronics scarce. Tons of 911s around though - C2, C4, Tips, Cabs, wide range of prices/colours.

Richard.

PS Edited to add, just read this on the Parker's website (lots of good data on there).

"The Cayman is an interesting vehicle for Porsche. It is a coupe based on the Boxster, and like its soft-top sibling has two seats - however, it's a little pricier. That said it's still cheaper than the iconic 911, and is arguably prettier with a few extra curves adorning its rear. Our instincts suggest the Cayman will neither become as famous as the 911, nor even gain the recognition of the Boxster, but it is certainly a great sports coupe in the Porsche tradition."

It's not very logical but it kind of sums up how I feel

£45-50k..???

Sorry, but as impressive as the figures are, there's some amazing and gorgeous machinery knocking around at that price that has already taken the big first year depreciation hit.

That car is so out of touch. The Max Power market has squeezed its pimples and fled.

Hmm. A V8 M3 with some class and pedigree, or a 2l 4-cyl turbo chav-mobile?

Actually, as v8vd says, there is an amazing choice of fabulous cars around for that money. A nearly new Audi R8 can be had for £60k now, and they'll be closer to £50k in the New Year. Bit of a shame is you paid £90k only a few months ago

Far from just a fast TT. My old man has one, and the handling/cornering aboility is unbelievable. Been on 2 Audi track days now, and the sheer speed/grip it has

Audi's best car by far, and baring the GT3, GT2, Turbo, it's better than any other Porsche.

The new V10 engined R8 will take the R8 into supercar territory. Expect it to out lap the Gallardo/F430 when Top Gear get hold of one.

That's it! The R8 is ill-conceived - a great car without a market slot. As it is, it simply does not have the cache of rivals. To become coveted or aspirational, it needs at least 600bhp and a prestige badge, like Lambo maybe - which is kinda tricky in the VW/Audi portfolio. And now I wonder what Porsche will make of it in their empire

I think the R8 was conceived as a direct 911 rival. An alternative to the obvious choice. The 911 may be cheaper, but start speccing one up and it is about the same price as the R8. And to me it looks better than a 911 too.

The V10 engined car will be a direct rival to the Ferrari F430, 911 Turbo, & Gallardo. Which as you say makes it kinda tricky for Porsche, given they now own VW/Audi/Lamborghini. Although those loyal to the Audi brand may not have bought a 911 anyway, so I suppose they win both ways.

For me, I'd take an R8 over a Carrera S or 4S, but I'd take a 911 Turbo over an R8.
I'll wait to drive the V10'd R8 on track to see if I'll still feel the same. Getting me old man to express interest, in order to get a free track day. Of which I'll take. He ain't that bothered.

I was sat next to an R8 in a horrible jam on the M4 (J 4b) yesterday and have to say that I do like them a lot. And those headlights are so damn cool too!
Shame he was driving like a t1t.
