Test Drove the UK STI and not ordered it !!

Just come back from trying again

Drove there in a Vectra so I wasnt comparing it against the M3. Took out a well run in P1 and the UK STI. Performance wise, couldnt split them. Handling wise the UK STI is on a much more modern/rigid chassis, and with the front diff if certainly handled better, with less understeer. Ride quality was as bad in each. Found the STI to be more laggy

Went for another circuit in the STI as I enjoyed it Sorry Scott I did find the UK STI a punchier package than your UK300.

Still trying to decide if I want one. With the PPP it will certainly be an awesome car.

I got out of my MY01 (PPP, HKS Hiper, ITG...) and test drove the STI7 today.

If I had the money I would have gone home in it!

OPn the drive to my dealers my car was twitchy around a corner, I took the same corner in the STi faster and it didn't even flicker.

The interior is pretty much the same as the MY01, but at least I found out what one of the blank switches was for, I/C spray!

IMHO I thought it was a very good car, ride and handling was spot on for me. Thinking that the PPP is on the horizon. the standard exhaust is fully catted up (some nasty corners in the pipe work to) and the engined isn't loosened up yet, it will be a very special car.

Like it, want one, can't afford the hit on my car!

Gladd to see you at Scoobysport. Your car is looking particularly beautiful, especialy with that wing. I will post the pctures of both our cars in the morning, on members gallery I think the title will be "What a lovley pair".

Dave! I value your point and you are probaly right but the uk doesn't have as much power as an import and comes not with HID lights.
For a change the imports will be rarer then the UK ones.
Suffice to say that I really don't care.

But the MY03 Impreza will have a face list - plus a PPP will be available.

So wait 9 months and see how different its going to be before blowing your wads on a car that might be facelifted by this time next year!!!

Been told by my dealer not to bother with the STI as it is miles off a P1 with the usual mods (300+). Still think that I will wait until the perfomance at least matches a P1!

Those P1's that are in the show rooms are around 27k on average, the new STi is 27.5 (for a prodrive one) or 26 for a non prodrive one... now, with improved grip, better brakes, better handling, better engine, better gearbox, better build quality, stronger shell, a PPP on the way (300+ bhp) which one do you think the dealer wants to get rid of before it looses money????
The STi IS THE Subaru to buy at the moment, its a great all round package IMHO and well worth the money and even if some people say that the ride is harsh (even more than my MY00's???? Nahhhhhhh ) and its performance is on par with a MY00 PPP'd car (yup i can tell you that and agree with Neil ) so for a fat lardy car its not bad
But the best thing about this car is that it just has soooooooooo much potential to modify it from (and you get those 335mm discs up front compared to the 297mm on the P1!) the choice is yours! (but mines the STi type UK )

Had a P1 for a while now. Had no problems with any elements you mentioned. Your right about the depreciation but until something as quick as my P1 comes out will stick to the better looking, lower, more awsome handling car!

What is the PPP package that gives 300bhp+? I thought the prodrive performance pack was just body panels?

equal to my00 with ppp? my god, i definately dont want one then, i thought ppp on my00 was WAY overated...thats why i dont have one any more! very happy with our sti5 with link thank you very much

Stop trying to justify what you already have and you are used to it.
If money were no object you woul have one. (and don't go saying you would buy something else I mean if you have the cash avilable to spend on a car.

Subaruce,
Prodrive has done the body styling on some of the cars but the PPP for the STi7 should give it more power than the Jap import version now saying that i believe (but cannot confirm) that the cars Prodrive have at the moment are pushing something like 320bhp (ish) but no doubt they will be still mapping and adjusting the ecu's to get the best balance out of the car.
Now as for the STi being as quick as a PPP'd MY00, yup i can vouch for that as the one i was in was damn quick (with 3 ppl in!) and that was running on 95ron fuel! (oh and 100 miles on the clock!) It is just a fantastic car though

if money were no object, i could think of a lot of cars i would buy before an sti7. all i was saying is that IMHO, the sti5 is a smashing car, better looking than sti7, engine wise...is the sti7 SO much better to warrant an extra 10k outlay?

If money was no object, then I don't think an STi7 would be top of everyone's automotive shopping list, although it is undoubtedly a very good car, as are <diplomatic mode on> ALL Impreza's

Also, you are quick to accuse other people of being blinkered and defending 'what they already have', but aren't you being just as blinkered about your STi7 ?

Well discussions aside, I should get my type UK this week, Each model will have advantages, Grey V Euro, P1 v UK, EVO V scoob, Cossie V scoob

There are reasons for my decision

Will I regret buying it not a chance!!!

Well, had my test drive yesterday.

The drop in power from the import version is noticeable, but its still a very nice drive. I would say that the ride, although firm, is more comfortable than my MY00.

However, the torque and power distribution through the 6 speed box only appeared slightly better than my current car which has only had a modified exhaust system, although the demo only had a couple of hundred miles on the clock and was still fairly tight (including a clunky gearbox - hope that isn't harping back to the old days!).

The handling is much improved through the stiffer shell and other modifications, and the braking is much improved (although again only comparable to mine which admitedly is modified).

I was hoping it would take my breath away and force me into parting with hard earned yesterday. However, whilst I am certain I've found my next car, I'll be hanging on to my current one for a while longer, especially when there are so many rumours about restyling and performance versions in the offing.

One thing is the dealer went on about there only being 750 STi's allocated to the UK and that they were nearly all sold. That isn't what I understood, I thought the limitations were lifted. Has anyonw else had this line?

What is it with P1 owners - I have a far superior MY99 car to the P1 () and am happy to concede that the Sti VII Type UK is a far superior car in terms of chassis and handling sophistcation, even though it has nearly 100 less ponies than my day to day Scooby. Point to point a P1 would only just stay with the STi VII, if that.

Open you eyes. It is a superb car.

Trout - what you doin' up soo late, ain't it past your bed time in the nursing home..

The P1 was and is a great car, over priced, but good none the less, having owned one I know this (as does my bank balance after selling it, 35% loss in the first year ).

But the STi VII is just huge improvement even over the new WRX, in a lot of ways. And an altogther much better package with more potential. IMHO.

Dr Evil - if you lost £10k in one year then I think that either you were wanting a quick sale or the dealership you went to took you for a ride (unless you did ultra high mileage). Ive been looking at three different P1's at different dealers which I thought were overpriced. All 3 were sold within a week of going on sale so there is plenty of demand (latest one went for £25k with 27k on the clock and w reg).

P1 depriciation was bad but mainly due to the outrageous pricing from Subaru. IMHO the STi7 wont fair much better. Thats what makes the P1 such a good 2nd hand buy. If you can find a low miler (sub 10) that hasnt been thrashed on the track, has a few goodies on it and has 18 months warranty on it for around the £24k mark with a bit of haggling, then you have a bargain and you cant argue with that fact.

I dont doubt the STi 7 is a more superior car technically (evolution is a given) but the fact that a large percentage of drivers who own either couldnt fully utilise their cars power or handling to its full potential, then the difference on paper is neglible. So that leaves the choice down to budget and looks. I personally am out of my budget thinking of getting a P1 - a STi 7 is out of the question (and no I dont want to wait another 8 months before one is in my price range), that said I wouldnt buy one purely on looks (but that is my personal preference and I have no issue with others preferring the STi 7).

Dont want to turn this into another defending the P1 thread but Trout if the P1 is so outclassed as you say then how come even Evo mag who get bucketloads of advertising revenue from Subaru preferred it to the Jap Spec STi 7? I think your comments are a little OTT.

Just cos a car is newer dont mean it is better (look at non sporting Mazdas in recent years, steadily going into a decline). The new shape WRX was purposefully repackaged by Subaru for a wider market hoping to break into US sales. It is less hard edged to appeal to more people.

STi 7 is the car the WRX should always have been.

P1fanatic - did you not read my post - I wasn't slating the car.. I was slating the price... Sure the dealer's sell them at circa 25K with 20K+ miles on the clock, I'm not the only person that spent a total of 35K on my P1, then had the option of getting £23K, or at a push £24K privately... so it was easier to accept £22K from a dealer and save the hassle, as have at least two others I know of. Face it, the reason you guys get such a good deal on the P1 second hand is cos it isn't holding its price what so ever.
