Ultimately, it comes down to money. Everything does in the end. And diesels do well on fuel economy. That is a priority now, and as you say, long term that's not going to change much.
But there will always be enthusiasts who are prepared to pay extra for what they want. This is a different breed to the person who buys a nice motor just because they can afford it (or used to be able to). It is the latter group who are now getting sensible and selling their expensive cars, and it is the (less-sensible?) enthusiasts who are picking up amazing bargains.
