Okay, I have bitten the bullet and am going to try Alliance & Leicester for a while. Couple of motivating factors.

0% on overdraft facility for the first year and they match your current one
Premier switching facility will do all of my direct debits and standing orders
They also will sort out my wages to go into the new account

Not too fussed about branches as I rarely use them, mostly do stuff via the telephone and web

I was leaning towards HSBC and First Direct but heard a few bad stories from mates, so decided to give them a miss.

We shal see how the move goes.

Just out of interest, I applied this morning online, got an email response back within 4 minutes to say they were reviewing the application and then another one within 30 mins saying it was all approved. They are now starting the switching process in time before my wages hit the account.

So pretty impressed so far but the jury is out until at least 6 months

Still seems odd that we can't really trust banks any more!

I have used Lloyds for a good many years and never had a problem so far.

HSBC however were the only major bank whos share price did not plumet.
All the other international gambling crooks - hit rock bottom needing gov bail outs, arab money etc etc.
HSCB did dabble and they did lose. But by far the soundest of the big high street banks.

Online are the best deals. Personaly I dont trust online banking so dont go there
Linky

Best Bank Accounts: Get £100 for switching, or a 0% overdraft...

Hope this helps
Steve

Alliance and Leicester are very sound financialy didnt gamble at all and sat back and laughed as the flash boys crashed and burned - they have some good deals. But not strictly a bank of course.

Aliance and Leicester are now part of santander (abbey)

First direct for me, I stupidly misjudged my account so got hit with 3 x £25 charges in the space of a few days and they have very kindly just given it me back
