Will you be taking the 997 to Donington
BR,
Richard.
PS Is Bob R still living next door with his Black Widow Maker? GT2 was it?

Damn,
There goes all the cheap bargins!!!
I was looking at a 996 with the GT3 Kit (not pukker GT3's) as a car for the next year or so.
Only the bad stories of engine failures (I had deja Vue from looking at STi5/P1's in 2001) and possible problems at work, has made me hold back the cash so far since selling the Scoob.
Its nice to see like minds out there. Ill be watching your progress.

I thought they were the same 996 engine but with different crank and pistons and a dry sump? The dry sump being one of the reasons they dont suffer the same failure rates.
Most of the banter I remember reading was that the 996 (and Boxter) was Porsches first 'foray' into the mass production market, fueled by the dit-com boom of the late 90's. Hence the engine design was not perfect first off.

Ive had a 1986 911 3.2 SC,i had the car for 3 years and never had any probs with it,found that it woz not much more to run than any of the other cars ive had,woz great fun to drive a bit of a devil to handle in the wet but well worth it although the 996 & 997 are great cars but you cant beat the sound of the air cooled flat six,if i woz to buy another one would have to be the 993 turbo

As your phto strongly resenmbles my old 993TT, I have attached some images . It was a far prettier car externally to my current 996TT. It was also pretty quick. One of the photos shows my then 20 year old son (with a friend of his next to him) away to do a standing quarter mile at an event. Even with him just getting it away in first (to save clutch wear)before giving it everything , the car still ran sub 13 seconds!

think 996s will be more reliable
993s are the ones to go for IMO but interior is dated 996s arent great tho
RMS will be less likely to go on 996+, common on 964s
boxsters are prob best bet if scared of running costs and reliability (like me) plus a good start to porsche life
I keep saying i'll have a 993
but I said that about this girl i knew once, had kids now so theres no way i'm goin there

Thanks for your input into this thread guys. Lots of great info
I've now decided against a 911 after all. Unless prices get a lot keener for a 997 sometime soon, which is not impossible, but maybe unlikely.
Not that I don't want one, but when it comes to the crunch for £15-20k it's a 996 that is 8-10 years old, with 50-80k miles. Plus the buying risks and running costs that go with a well-used sports car.
For the same money, I can get an M3 that is half the age, half the miles and with half the owners. That is a much better long term bet for me - and it's (fractionally) faster (Although neither M3 nor 911 are as effortlessly quick as my modded 2.5l classic scoob - just an observation.)
Meanwhile, I've bought an Audi TT 3.2 DSG for my wife. She wanted a silver or grey car with a light grey interior, which proved hard to find. There are tons of red cars with light grey, or black with red She's a poser but not a tart y'know
Anyway, after a month of searching the right car came up and I pretty much bought it unseen. Spot-on colour and spec, just three years old and a genuine 10k miles by one owner. £15k paid. Car was perhaps a grand or so over what I might have paid, but it came with a full dealer service, 12 months waranty, 12 months tax and MOT, and some fancy paint and leather protection thing. Car cost over £30 new, and it's still like new, and she's absolutely thrilled with it
I'll be M3 hunting and 911 watching in the New Year - prices are still coming down...
Richard.

The Widowmaker is still going strong - its a little, er, tweaked with an exhaust note that can rattle pictures on my office wall!
Still looking around - actually been considering an gt3RS (because they come in Orange!) but that's probably a little too silly. I almost bought a DB9 last week: 6 months old manual with sport pack - new price £120k, offered to me by an Aston main dealer for <80k

kryten, sorry to hear you've fallen on hard times bud, and forced to downgrade to Porkers and Astons. Just make sure it's got a turbo so Bob can 'optimise' it for you
You don't have to be under 40 to do the Ring. It's a wonderful place for old timers too. There's a few old ScoobyNetters running trips on NorthLoop.com. Did a kart race with those guys recently and proud to say my lad was 3 secs a lap quicker than any of them (had to get that one in ). Big girls
Lord knows what Bob's GT2 is like now. Well over 600bhp for certain, if not more. He'd only just got it when he mapped my Scoob and he said then that it would squeal the rears in third just by flooring it
Must be noisy down your road
Richard.

I dunno about hard times - prices seem to be dropping like a stone! Even Dick Lovett are slashing prices (i get their weekly stock list and some of the italian stuff is getting really tempting!)
With the constant stream of scoobs arriving I've often though of getting another one. Been thinking about a wagon as the 'sensible' car, allowing me to go far more silly with something else...
Was thinking of a 911 Turbo but to drive it just wasn't much fun - quick in a straight line (and bob could make it more so!) but it was miles away from the feel and fun I get from the elise. The gt3 I nearly bought was just like the elise, only with an extra 250 horses
Been looking to get my son into karting but nowhere local will take under 10s - only another few months to wait, though I guess I'd better get my car sorted as IIRC you spend a fortune on the karting!!

LOL You tried a Noble M400? Like an Elise with a bomb in the back. Fookin brill
We had some magic years karting, but if your lad's any good, you will get carried away and spend a fortune. Guaranteed. All those years ago, we were spending a grand a week and got to beat young Lewis Hamilton a few times. Other lads we know have spent mi££ions and despite real talent have no hope of getting an F1 drive. Just paying £1.5m a year to go round and round in GP2.
Keep it real, but if I had a ten year old nipper again, we'd be karting again for sure
Richard.
