A 3/4 plate (motorbike size letters) is actually legal on jap import cars! Mine is a UK model so not an 'import' in a true sense! I don't think that coppers could tell the difference anyway hence mine not being pulled for it in the two years its been on and also passing its MOT every year!!
Generally I find it easier to explain my way out of having no plate than a tiny on/illegal one.

I generally tell the Police that my plate has been ripped off and i'm waiting for a new bracket from Subaru and it should be there in 2 days time. I always carry my front plate and put it in the window if an Old Bill are about. Unfortunetly it doesn't like to stay there.

As said before I've been ok with a 3/4 plate on my UK spec car, so you should be fine with your import. However the rules are open to interpretation either way IMHO, so its down to you wether you take the risk or not! I chose to and so far have been ok! (thats just tempted fate now )

Not very clear is it, DVLA document does nothing to help and if you go to Number Plates, show plates, Number Plate Makers you can buy genuine British Standard Import sized 7 character plates 380mmx90mm.

Thanks for all your pics and suggestions people i went with a small front number plate, finally got it the car more or less finished and took some piccies, here they are, i know not everyone likes graphics, normally neither do i, but these are purley for advertising for the business, what ya think?

Managed to re design the intercooler water spray and rellocate it in the bumper so it sprays direct onto the core, you can just see the jets if you look close in the pic below, very happy with the end result.

I did what a lot of people do.

Used the existing bracket but a 3/4 plate. Nice and tidy, allows the air to flow and has a legal font on it (just a tad smaller )
