Nat - nice. Car (errmm 2 cars in fact) essential for living here but tax, roadside recovery cover, insurance and servicing all seem to come at once. That being November. Even old bangers are a hell of a burden.

Having said that in a typical week I ride 50-70 miles, walk 15-20 miles (with the dog) run 5-8 miles (with the dog) and do other "non transport" exercise (surfing and weights) all for fun.

He doesn't have a "solution." He's just watching what happens with enough money put away and spread around to be unlikely to be affected too much. If any opportunities come up, he'll grab them. He did say last week that with interest rates being so poor (lives comfortably off interest), he might have to "do a bit of work" to keep the money coming in (!!).

The comment refers to the measures, that although probably "right," will still not have much impact on a collapsing economy - of which the UK seems to be hit almost hardest.

I should imagine you use a fair bit of energy doing you landlords garden as well, although thats really only a summertime activity really .
I would be inclined to ask him to buy a ride on mower if I were you .No point killing yourself for someone elses benefit .
Its worth a try .
Good Luck.

nkj - I would have got a ride-on but some of the slopes are too steep - I'd fall off and die which would be a small but significant inconvenience.

Instead I got the biggest rotary petrol you can get that pulls me along up the hills. Not worried about the fuel costs - very minimal and I enjoy it anyway.

I'm happy to do bits and bobs without asking for money (fitted a new door handle last week for example). Sort of give and take really. We get a good deal. Their house gets looked after. They don't put the rent up!

Sounds like a marriage made in heaven .(figuratively speaking )
Everyones a winner .You have delightful place to rent, and the Landlord has a very thoughtful Tenant ,who is looking after the Landlords investment .
Its a win win situation by the look of it .
I would be cheeky if I were you and ask for a reduction in rent though due to the interest rate cut .Its worth a try and if you dont ask ,you dont get .

Again it's a bit of give and take. The rent has stayed the same for 2.5 years (since we moved in) - in that time interest rates went up and prices rocketed - but the rent stayed the same. Now it's the other way, I'm happy to carry on at the same rent. Which really is a bit of a bargain.

It sounds almost like a house sitting situation .Is the landlord out of the country a lot.?

Jeez you talk some **** - you claim to have 5 acres where no other property can be seen from 'your' land, then say your best buddy landlord neighbour lives 150 yards away. - Your other best buddy who is worth ten million reckons that reducing interest rates to counteract the recession is as effective as a duck farting in a thunderstorm, but neither you nor he can offer an alternative suggestion. Is there any chance that you make stuff up on a post by post basis to suit the thread?

i don't have search but you have previously stated that this place was worth nearly a million? (5 acres, 5 bedrooms) that's some savings you have even with the price reduced by 20-30-40% or whatever.

Errrmmm - no I don't actually. The land is almost all to the East (a longish strip of land) of us - they live to the West, just down the drive. We don't live bang in the middle of it. Just like town houses often have a big garden but are close to the road...

Oh and the mate - actually it's a close relative. And his parents who are worth a similar amount. It's not their job to "solve" the recession. They just have their own ways of taking advantage.

jjones - ahhh I remember you being a major league pain in the butt. We could buy a sizeable chunk. It will be a few years before we can buy it outright - basically our savings are rising, the price of it is falling. We hope it will meet somewhere in the middle.
Thanks for taking such an interest though

Maybe we have different priorities mate - and it is generally only greedy dodgy bankers that view cars as potentially appreciating investments after all. Live life and spend it before it is gone...so that's an extra £200 in the M6 fund already this month - bingo! D

That's my philosophy too. I'm already planning a new garage, new kitchen and new car with the drop in rates

I figure I've only got about 25 years left before I'm too old to enjoy it all (if indeed I'm still alive by the time I'm 70 ) so I may as well throw caution to the wind

Anyone see the money programme last night?
Very, very interesting and I could not agree with the French way of doing things any more (debt is embarrassing).
They also compared someone who had bought say 20 years ago to someone who rented for the same period - renter was better off. There was also a multi millionaire who refused to buy a place. He rents every time. Just thinks it's more sensible.

I just look forward to buying a house (possibly - or might just rent forever) outright and having zero mortgage/rent payments ever again. Doesn't mean I'm not eyeing up a 335d touring though...

That't really impressive, I am in awe!! I am really rubbish with finance and find it hard to save up for a pair of jeans, never mind a six figure sum!!

You obviously must have amazing self-restraint when it comes to not spending money. as well as a fantastic job with superb salary. Although judging by your posts, you seem to be extremely well clued up on the housing market and have obviously bided your waited many years for this exact moment!

How long did it take to save up such a huge amount of cash?

Olly - about four years. Of course as we earn a fortune, it's pretty easy really. Plus we are extremely gifted in every department.
Oh and I was asked to run for Prime Minister - I said I was busy.

Blimey, I'm panicking now because I feel I haven't even done a quarter of what I want to do. If you've got any cash left over that you have no use for send it my way please, I've got a HUGE list of stuff that I've yet to do

So, should I buy another motocross bike or not?

The one I have is perfectly good, but the new one has black wheels.

I also have a mortgage.

LOL - black is very 'this season' and timeless. Maybe you should e-mail Gok Wan? There is however a difference between an outright necessary indulgence and a well deserved reward for hard work. 18" wheels fall into both categories
