Even with the way prices have gone, there is still probably £400,000 equity in the house and it is saleable. So, if it all goes **** up, we sell it (it's a desirable house in an affluent area) and buy something perfectly decent for cash

Oh, and if that sounds like i'm bragging, i'm not. Those on here that have known me long enough will know how I came by some of the money

Dave - just pray you don't need to sell it for a while.
Honestly I've seen £700k houses going for silly prices recently. And those are just the ones that are actually selling. Just sit on it and hope for the best. The way the market is going, even that "safe" equity could be dodgy.

I can guess how you got some of the deposit - sorry to hear that. Makes the house even more than just a home I guess?

It was bought as a home to live in and we love the house. We have no intention of moving, particularly as after an extension, refurbing the old part of the house and other various bits and pieces it owes us about £250,000 more than it is currently worth - certainly not going to worry about that as we have no control over it

I've had to start over from scratch twice already in my life and getting a bit too old to want to do it again, but whatever happens will happen.....

If you earn between 100k and 200k a year, it's not so much of a worry I guess. Likewise spending 50% of your take home salary on a mortgage on 200K a year, really is not that much to worry about for some.

No problem. You can then tell me how everything has gone t1ts up for you and how you like to post 10,000++ threads poking bitter comments at anyone better off than you... Each dig says an awful lot about you.

You might have to wait for the **** up post

Apart from a serious dose of Man Flu, life coudn't be better....and it has little to do with Finance. Saying that I have just committed to spending over £4k this week.....of my own money....yep, not a loan. I must be mad.

Committed to spending £4k? Are you mad? Not sure but you must be LOADED to have access to those sort of funds...

Saved me having to post that.....

To think that only last week I was wishing our long lost friend congratulations on his new born (which still stands true BTW) but know I'm bored stupid by him all over again.

Matteboy...

Don't take it personally as people can come across in strange ways on the internet.

Your 'internet persona' reminds me of an old football coach I had at school who we all used to call 'Avdun'.......as in 'I've done' this and 'I've done' that. Don't know what it is but you just have the ability to annoy me on here...

Nothing personal, you simply can't like (or expected to be liked by) all the people on this planet

Still genuinely glad for you and your good lady

He's not - I can vouch for Dave (how are you BTW! )

We're in interesting position at the moment. Made the decision to sell my house last June, which has turned out to be a very good move Currently renting a flat with a view to buying somewhere in the Brighton area. I'm lucky in that by selling my last house and making a few quid, I have enough to cover a decent deposit, so therefore I do have the choice of maybe renting and keeing the money or buying somewhere.

I saw the Money Programme last night and it made interesting viewing. I'm still swaying towards buying another place - prices have finally started to drop (although most vendors are still living in cloud cuckoo land with regards to their asking prices) and with the hopefully better mortage deals, it won't be a problem to afford the repayments. We're also looking medium long term as to how long we will stay.

I think I will view a few more places and then make a decision...

Nice.

In these thread everyone tries to make out how much better their current lot is than the next. No one will admit they have debts and it degenerates into ePenis waving.

I do have debt and I would get myself into more debt to buy a car that depreciates faster than its fuel needle. Clearly not the right thing to do buts what I would do. Its certainly very tempting anyway, if my "hobby" pocket money wasn't being used elsewhere I'd probably have one by now.

I don't even think about it (unless Matteboy tells me I am stupid.) - It is just another direct debit that needs covered. I know what I need to make to keep everyone happy, then I add on what I need to make me happy, then I work out how to earn it. Might be financial services, might be fitting kitchens, might be hanging doors, might be fixing computers. Can't include working 40 hours in the same week. That is it really. Work out your skills, work out how you can utilise them, and then do it. If I didn't have a pile of alternative ways to make money and relied on a single skill, then I would probably be sh1tting myself, but if that was the case then I wouldn't have bought this house
