Sometimes I do get p1ssed off at four by four drivers, most are driven ok but when you are on a bike they are that bit more intimidating so perhaps thats my issue, also some of the crew cab pickups and Range Rover Sports etc are driven very badly round our way, saw a woman fly past our kids school, so fast she overshot the turn and went onto the unmade road and reversed without looking, I see them aiming between lines of parked cars at 40 mph with no regard for safety as long as they are safe, so perhaps the problem is the drivers, not the cars as they would behave badly in anything, its just that these things weigh up to 3 tonnes and have a lot of easily accessed power, long travel suspension so it allows you to fly over speed bumps safe in the knowledge that if you hit something you will bash it out of the way. I think they are a bit too isolating, high up, well insulated and very simple to operate, a Land Rover 110 requires several miles, a slight slope and a tail wind to reach 60 wheras some of these things will do it in six seconds or not much more just by flexing your right foot, all very quiet and serene from the cabin but alarming from outside, nothing like a faceful of turbo diesel fumes when on a push bike.
Modern, direct inject, diesels aren't like that, well not when I got my 1994 Disco D anyway. Having lived in countries where the sulfur count is upto 30 times that which is available in the UK and Europe, there is a smoke (PM10) problem. But put it into perspective, it's NOTHING like Africa!

Well I cant get my Audi or the Scoob before it down the lane to my farm house due to the very rutted path - hence the (non current LPG converted) Range Rover.
Cant fault it - great fun to drive - not bothered if it get a few scrapes or dint on it , take it off road, put the wet dog in the back etc.

Serioudsly thinking of swapping it in a years time for a used VW Tourag.

Better ecconomy = lower Co2 emissions (Not that Co2 is really an issue anyway form an AGW PoV anyway).
Its not a 4x4 tax though Klaatu, as you've said, and FCD above- it was a distraction to divert attention from the fact that biggish family car is also hit.

The 4x4 panda costs more because it emits more Co2.

Better real world economy does not always equal lower quoted Co2 emissions. As I've posted above (and before) we are paying over twice the amount in tax now, and yet get better MPG.

Mate, if you are behind a big diesel 4 by 4 and the driver hoofs it you get left in a big warm diesel cloud, not like you say an old style one you chew on but pretty smelly all the same.

One of my cars is a 3.2 DiD Pajero, it has had millions of Yen spent on it in Japan consisting of wheels, bodykit, suspension, exhaust mods etc.

Also a fortune was spent on engine/turbo/intercooler mods including re-map, to give it more ...........SMOKE.

I love the smoke to be honest, no better feeling than leaving a posh bird in her company Lexus homodrive in a cloud of black stinking smoke.

I need to be able to tow heavy trailers and pull them out of fields and drive on uneven roads so I have a Jeep.
It has Mud and Snow rated all terrain tyres and is equiped with locking diffs and low ratio box. It's crap on road but is exactly the vehicle I need so I don't care what anyone else thinks.

I admit I look at vehicles like the X5 and think they are pretty pointless being an off roader with little off road ability but if people buy them that's their own choice.
YouTube - BMW X5 vs Classic Land Rover

And my 1.4 TDCi Fiesta kicks out more smoke than the Jeep on full throttle.

Cheers
Lee

Have to say I think the posters on a forum that champions a performance car that does little over 20mpg and is capable of attaining a speed of double the legal limit in any part of this fair land are on pretty dodgy ground criticising 4x4's for being unneccesary and inefficient

I'm looking to swap my A8 for a ML, Touareg, Disco, Range Rover etc. Reason being, I want to be able to tow a modern twin axle caravan, and you can't do it in anything but one of these.

LOL - My Mrs would quite happily take up the pikey lifestyle given half the chance, and once the kids leave home, I suspect she'll want to live on a caravan site/park for 10 months of the year.

I'd need to get a Hobby anyway, but we are looking at an Elddis

Now is the time to buy.

Avandale have gone into administration and the Swift Group have laid off 250 and are on a three day week. Dealers stock isn't shifting and even large dealers like Lowdhams are having financial problems.
Some very good deals around at the moment.

Cheers

Click on my Plus Profile.

I bought my 1999 Jeep Cherokee in January for £1500. Its a 4.0 so sub 20mpg round town and about 26 on a run.

Its been faultless. Lots of people say the build isn't good but its more to do with it being an old design than poor build - they UK Cherokees were built in Austria. The engine and gearbox are bomb proof (we drove it over 120 miles without gearbox fluid!) and parts are cheap as chips.

its been great during the summer, chuck the bikes and the nipper in the back and away.

Much rather spend 1500 that 15000 in the current climate.

And they can do this with a few mods

I looked at all of those, but if you want to tow anything out of a wet muddy field, i would look at Landcruisers, Shoguns or Landrovers, i used to use a Cayenne, and if you don't want to **** about just buy a proper 4x4, iv'e now got a Landcruiser, and it's by far the best proper 4x4 iv'e ever used.

I would agree but add Jeep and Nissan Patrols to the list. The Kia Sorento also has decent ability on the right tyres as long as axle articulation isn't needed.
