Pie "pastry" was designed to keep the contents fresh rather than as part of the meal, you'd simply pick off and dispose of the pastry and eat the contents. Strange how people now eat the packaging?

I'd never eat a pie, way too chavy, as is mash and gravy.

Strewth! The "pie" originated in London (I think) using "stale bread" as the "crust/bowl". Eat the contents and discard the "crust/bowl". We now eat the "crust" (Obviously the contents has suffered in some cases).
