well the first thing is why at that age do you have 2 years no claims yet no accidents? why not a longer no claims?

as to the jap not being more expensive to insure than a uk car, in my experience insurers wanted at least double, some times triple the amount for an import and so i got a uk car, plus i think theres a lot of shonky imports, but no doubt some good ones too.

They're just expensive cars for insurers, look at the thread on here titled scooby smash as the perfect example of why, all the emergency and recovery vehicles called out to clear that mess up. The insurer will have to pay for all them

I pay £550 with Tesco and that is with legal cover and protected no claims.
Have you declared your "mild mods?" in that quote? I didn't think Tesco or any of the big companies catered for modifications? Also - don't Tesco require a tracker on the car (another £110 a year?)?

Privilege wanted an extra £200 a year when I enquired about changing my wheels when I was with them - it's just a joke! Fair enough if the car doesn't have a CAT1 alarm but when it does they start getting far harder to steal!

Exactly what i was thinking. Agree on imports too. Once had a quote for a UK Twin Turbo Supra that was less than the company were prepared to quote for the NA import version!!

TBH i doubt Keith Michaels will help, they are the same as others in needing you to have had the car for a year at least before they can give you a good quote. The lack of experience goes against you quite a lot and the fact you are looking to insure a rare model.

I went with Tesco in my first year. Needed a tracker but even adding in that cost it was £££'s cheaper than everywhere else. Once i'd had the car a year KM dropped the quote right down. In fact it is up for renewal soon....

I did yes, they were fine although they have just classified "after market exhaust", which makes you think it just refers to the backbox. I added the mods after setting the policy up as obviously got them done afterwards. I only have two mods to declare - the exhaust and the remap as far as I am aware.

I'm going to call a specialist when the renewal is up to make sure I get everything down correctly as I don't trust the kind of blanket cover you get on mods from the bigger less knowlegable companies. Let's face it they will do anything to not pay out.

My car has a tracker as standard.

If you're anything other than mildly modded though I don't think you'll beat Keith Michaels or A-Plan.

I have a load of STI body parts on mine, plus exhaust, remap, filter, wheels, rear bumper conversion, springs, etc etc. Like I said, Privilege were okay for a standard car, but add any mods and the prices they want to charge you turn silly.

P.S. Mikkel - I wasn't aware of any scoobys coming with a tracker "as standard?" Is this a factory option??
Mine has an RAC Trackstar and a Tracker but neither are currently switched on.

scooby225 - Privilege also want a tracker don't they - did when I insured mine with them.

Given that Trackers cost around £100 a year by subscription, I'm surprised some of you are failing to factor that into the cost. KM didn't require one, so I saved £100 a year straight off....

Cool

Well im 30 with full No Claims and have re insured mine today, insured as follows:

05 WRX with PPP
PPF 18" Alloys
Brembo Brakes
Lowered Suspension
Protected No Claims
Business Cover.

with Admirial it came to £639 .... they have a nice little section where you can tick boxes for the various mods! thought that wasnt a bad price considering busniess use and the mods declared, will try some of these other companies listed as people seem to be getting cheaper (my cover doesnt start till end of month so no money taken yet :-) )

My renewal quote came today from KM.
I'm 30 with 10 years NCD, no points etc. 2001 WRX with the following declared mods:
- Remap
- Cat-back exhaust
- 18" alloys
- STI sideskirts, scoop, spoiler, headlamps, grille
- Version 8 rear bumper and light clusters
- UK300 splitter
- Early model seats
- STI strut brace
- Prodrive lowering springs
- Braided hoses and uprated discs

£575 all in, full comp and protected NCD. Is that a good price? Should I go for a quote with A-Plan to make sure?

Got a quote from A-Plan yesterday.
£520 fully comp, with protected NCD, legal cover etc, based on a mileage of 12,000 miles a year.

However, there are some fairly major differences between them and KM:
1) If you write the car off, they don't pay out on an old for new basis on modifications - you only get what the car would have been worth selling it on with them mods attached.
2) They have a higher excess.
3) There's an £80 windscreen excess.

I spoke with Gary and he has managed to get the quote down to £550.
Given the sake of £30 I'd prefer piece of mind that should I have a crash / the car gets stolen and crashed / burnt out, then at least I'd get more money back on an old for new scheme than I would with what A-Plan are offering.

So I guess I'm sticking with KM. Another vote for Gary!

Too right mate - very good price as far as I'm concerned, so renewed it this morning (Cheers Gary! )
Good postcode compared to RG12 eh? Are you dissin' Bracknell innit?

I'm surprised so many people on here state "mildly modified" and still go with A-Plan - those scoobs must either be VERY mildly modified, or they don't know how little the insurance company would likely pay out if the cars were written off.

£445 full comp protected, told of mods, just asked what was done, and what was the increase in power. 29yrs old, directline also ask for a tracker as they say with out it, it will not be coverd for, i will say nicked.
This price is the best i could get them down, 11yrs Loyalty bonuse for been with them for car insurance, never change brokers as nobody could come close. Also got 10% discount for having house insured.
Tracker was £125 per year or £350 1 off fee, paid £350.
Did i say i have 3 points, last yr 6 point £485

£445 WOW beat that.

Having performance cars from 20 may help but unsure why i get so CHEAP

£445 with Direct Line sounds very cheap if you indeed have declared all your mods (although you don't say what). I was under the impression that Direct Line were thieving beggars; I had a similar policy with Privelege involving a tracker but that was for a standard car no mods.
£350 for the tracker - fair enough, so you factor that cost in across years.

AND - as I previously mentioned - I'd be surprised if Direct Line do new for old on modifications and performance parts like KM, so a cheaper policy by £100 means absolutely nothing if you write the car off - you'd potentially be losing thousands over the sake of a few quid difference.

But a lot depends on your postcode as Dave already mentioned; you don't say where you're located so I assume somewhere in the country where thieves don't know how to get to you lol.

S66 is rotherham, I.E it's a town.

at the mo, it's just full de-cat, green pannel. i said prob 10% increase in power, that will take to 235ish but as we both no it will be less with out a map. Never had any probs with directline, but never claimed with the car, so can not state on that 1. But have claimed twice on the house with directline.
who is this other insurance your on a bout as i will try these or do an online quote to compare. Need www.

I can never understand why they ask how much extra power will the modifications make? e.g. 10% I'd say 0% as it's not as though they can prove it by putting it on a rolling road

I didn't think directline insured cars that were modified? I phoned up a few years ago to declare the stainless steel exhaust I'd just put on my Renault 19 16v, and by the end of the phonecall my insurance was cancelled cuz they said they couldn't insure me anymore!!! I spoke to supervisers, managers, loadsa people.....but nope.....they wouldn't have it. There's no section online for mods, so I'm guessing you have to phone em?

I am only 26, I got 5yrs no claims, 3 points, on a UK turbo 2000, and directline want £404 fully comp! That's if I got a tracker tho, and I haven't

Hmmm - so they haven't got details of your exact mods then?

KM is Keith Michaels. They don't do online quotes - and Gary Moulson there specialises in quotes for Subaru owners.

AFAIK their policies are all new for old parts. Most insurers will only give you back the value of the car had you sold it with all the parts on it in the event that it's written off - i.e. much much less than the true value of the car.

For me, given I've spent prob. in excess of £2k in body parts and wheels, plus a new catback stainless exhaust, suspension mods etc, that's more than worth the extra in premium I pay - before I moved to KM I was paying £430 odd a year with Privelege plus £100 a year for an RAC Trackstar. KM don't require a Tracker.

I was also under the impression that Direct Line didn't support modifications so this was a surprise to me.

Amazes me that so many people on here seem to apparently be insuring their cars un-modded - I wonder if they're aware that the insurance company can choose not to pay out if they turn up and your "standard" WRX or whatever has a load of aftermarket wheels, body and engine parts...

Quick Reply: cant find a cheap insurer ?
