The only time I withhold information is if I get asked : "I've just bought a gearbox from so and so, can you tell me if it is the right one for my car."

The answer always is, " Why can't the seller tell you, he's had your money.??"

Otherwise I am happy to advise.

The UK Subaru dealers have a bulletin that I have a copy of, which shows a code number on the rear diff. There are various options for R160:

VA1 RBF - XF is a 3.9 for a 1600 manual tm.
VA1 REF - XJ is a 4.111 on an auto non turbo these two are stickers

T1 is a 3.9 on a 2 litre Manual non turbo
BJ is a 3.545 on a UK / Euro turbo car these three are letter stamped
BK is a 4.111 auto turbo for Australia [ why do UK dealers need to know that ?? ]

The VA codes are on a label [ usually fallen off ] on the diff back cover left side between the two retaining bolts vertically.

The T, B type codes are stamped on a flat vertical surface on the right side of the rear diff in the angle where it changes from the nose of the diff to the main case.

OR T1, BJ, BK, can be stencilled in in white paint on the top of the diff. But as that area is usually rusty, it ain't much help either.

We have never collated the info for the JDM rear diffs as they come marked up from Japan for us.

The interweb has any number of transmission identifier sites available. Most centre around USA and Oz and can be inaccurate for JDM info. Especially the US ones as they never see the cars.
